Whenever I hear this, it makes me wonder what kind of mind could write such a piece…and how can pianists memorize it? This is my first time hearing it played by the composer, and it is different from what I’ve heard from other pianists. It seems somehow softer, more fluid, and more romantic. It is magical to hear it as originally envisioned.
He’s making mistakes😂 But you’re right, it’s very interesting. It shows he didn’t intend to make the piano dominant at the expense of the orchestra (which a lot of pianists are doing today) and there’s some polyphony that I don’t manage to hear in other performances. In general, Prokofiev played Prokofiev far more nuanced and romantic. It seems the percussive element became more prominent after him.
Wow. Thank you for sharing this! Hearing him perform this is just so affirming: it's how I imagined he would play it. I have loved this piece since I was very young, would have to say it's my favorite.
I always say about this piece: Life is better for the existence of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto #3. I want to live in a world in which someone (Prokofiev) came up with this piece of music.
This is remarkably good sound quality for a 78 rpm recording. Recordings of composers such as Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, etc. performing their own works are rare and to be treasured (especially when the sound is of such good quality as this recording is). Thank you for providing it.
What a treasure those records must be and thanks for sharing with us. Pianist today could gain a lot from listening to this played by the composer; those who are skilled and brave enough to take this work on.
This is so much faster than any other recording of it I've ever heard. One could be forgiven for thinking that perhaps the 78 it was taken from was running fast, but the pitch is correct. Amazing.
Sincerely grateful for this post! I've heard others perform it many times. This was like hearing it for the first time again. Such a revealing, exhilarating performance. Again, thank you!
Terrific sound and a revelatory performance by Prokofiev. His talent as a pianist is often forgotten. He somehow managed to squeeze it onto six sides without making it seem rushed. Brisk, yes, but not rushed. Thanks so much.
Hearing this I realize how slower than intended is played this piece nowadays (and, more broadly, all repertoire). Maybe it's a matter of the old recordings being played slightly faster than they shoud, but I suspect this is not the case. Anyway, I discover a new sense of wholeness in this piece played at this pace, and it's refreshing.
It sounds sped up indeed, I wonder how the orchestra managed to keep up with such a tempo! At times they are not really in sync, sounds amazing though!
I think is more because for the composer of a work is easier to play faster than other. Actually, more interesting than speed is the characterization, the phrasing, the energy he transmited. That is what makes this performing so wonderfull.
It is interesting that this recording featuring the composer Prokofiev as piano soloist was made in 1932, the same year Rachmaninoff recorded his "Rhapsodie on a Theme of Paganini" with Stokowski conducting. They are exactly contemporary examples of two great Russian composers performing their own works for piano and orchestra.
This is an incredible performance. Prokofiev takes his piece which is usually unlistenable and shows what a masterpiece it is. I have a version already but I like the sound of your upload better. I really appreciate this upload. Would you be willing to give me permission to connect all the sites together and upload it on my channel with a link to your channel and a very positive description of its contents? I would really appreciate it.

It's messy, scrambled, on the edge, and incredibly exciting. Nobody plays like this today.

so beautiful it's true
love you
Yes
And so you do.
I found out about this piece literally three days ago and have listened to it 50+ times since then. It gets better each time
Prokofiev was a musical genius! His works for piano are in a class by themselves.
Immaculate pianist, genius composer
A talent on the level of Rachmaninoff

22:27 absolutely no sentimentality in that climax. Just plows straight through it. Love it. No one plays it like this. (yet they should)
That is a good catch
I personally don't mind a little lilt, but this definitely works for me too
Excellent sound processing, Mr. Holmes, don't think I've heard 78s transcribed any better than that. Thanks
Thanks for listening
О, love, прямо эталонный концерт в исполнении автора. Like! Best.

A lot of composers that play their pieces play a bit faster than normal. Like Rachmaninoff
To fit compositions on 78 rpm records, composers sometimes played their pieces faster than normal.
@@donaldherbertholmes6228 Very true
Nah, there are some so much faster !
This peace is out of this world. ❤

23:13 to the end is simply glorious.
As he moves over the keyboard, it’s so fluid and airy. Beautiful.
So nice to read your comment!
And surprising.

Phenomenal. Great to find this upload.
Glad you like it!
@@donaldherbertholmes6228 thank you indeed!
Amazing ending!
On fire ! Great composer who was also a great pianist. The color shifts are always exciting, and moving.

¡Fascinante escuchar al maestro tocando su propia obra! ¡Muchas gracias!
thank you for this great great site

20:40 - 22:44 is so haunting...
Agree, this part is wonderful
Thank you. Miraculous edition
You're welcome 😊

He was popular for a pianist
especially for virtuosic play..

Yes, indeed! It's all bursting with vitality here. (And it's the same when Rach. plays Rach., or Scriabin Scriabin.)
Nos toca a los músicos ahora retomar la naturalidad que se ha perdido.

Its like Rachmaninov on drugs. But more wicked and mischievous
Yes, simultaneously beautiful and grotesque. My favorite composer of all time.

note:according to RCA reissues on Cd the Rhapsodie... of Rachmaninoff was recorded in 1934.Thank you for listening and commenting so favorably.
Prokofiev is literally nothing like rachmaninoff lol, plus rachmaninoff is very mischievous and wicked as well at times, so they both do it well
Thank you! "On drugs," absolutely!

Does anyone know the catalogue number? I can’t find it anywhere, but I‘d do anything to hear that set played on my old gramophone!

How is this concerto usually unlistenable?
@@erliLila I'll say it's def unfriendlier than Rach 2 or other similar concertos for example - but def great after a few listens
