- Nikola Jokic, not typically one to accept praise, was visibly pleased field a question about his magnificent Game 3 performance in his native Serbian.
Journalist: "People in Serbia were watching the game (in the middle of night), what can you tell us about the game, it was a very important win, first one in Miami, important both in terms of score and psychologically as well?"
Jokic: "I also got a lot of messages that people in Serbia are awake and were watching the game, I'd like to thank them. The game was very important for us, we returned the break they made in Denver, we controlled the whole game, once we got it we never lost the lead. The bench was great, they brought us victory."

The fact that our small area, sometimes condescendingly viewed, has produced such absolute top athletes as Jokić, Modrić, Djoković, Cro Cop, Ivanišević, Petrović, Balić, Vlašić, the Kostelićs, Ivanović, as well as athletes who grew up abroad like Karabatić and Miočić says a lot about our unique and incomparable mentality. Interestingly, I was raised in Phoenix. There is a very large population of Bosnians there because while I was a teenager, Phoenix received 6,000 refugees from the Serbian war. I had three classmates named Boris. They were polite but understandably stuck to their own group. Not Serbian, you understand - for some reason, your comment made me think about it, though.

As an European I enjoy the fact that our best players come play in your leagues and raise their level (and global reach) by dominating them.

I grew up in Puerto Rico, a predominantly Spanish speaking country but I always remember hearing how important it was to learn English just so that we could communicate with americans given our political relationship with them.
Then I moved to NYC in 1980 and I found that speaking a language other than english was the equivalent of being dumb or having a missing leg or arm. If you spoke anything other than English there was something wrong with you.
"You're in america now, speak english", was the message.
There's even been ppl (so called Karens) who have called the cops bc they heard somebody speaking Spanish as if that was a crime.
Those ppl don't realize how satisfying it is being able to speak more than one language and being able to communicate with others in their language. It's really a great feeling.
My daughter speaks 4 different languages, Spanish, English, Italian and Sign Language. This last one she got interested in while in college when she noticed this other student having a hard time communicating. Became close friends and ended up getting married. He's a great kid, treats her with love and respect I love him for that.

And I am also from Eastern Europe (Hungary) so I am not suprised at all. It’s so cool to see him dominate and keeping it real at the same time. That’s a lesson a lot of american superstars really need to learn. They think they are at the top of the world, when in reality Jokic is dominating the finals. Serbia is turning into the Harvard for the sports world. Do not forget about Luka from Slovenian. He is taking this to heart big time, and most likely practicing after each playoff game if he’s worth his salt. These two guys are my favorites because they are first a gentleman and then a super-basketball player to top it off. They bring back the “Like for basketball” that Magic, Bird, Jordan, and Kobe embodied.

Come to think of it, I makes sense for major Americans sports publications/websites to have translators for superstars that aren’t native English speakers. English is tough, looks at every comments page. Get them speaking in their native tongue and you bet higher quality answers because they have a bigger and more accessible working vocabulary and will try harder with their answers because you are putting the work in for them bringing a translator. Superstars love a good work ethic because they are all relentless.

It feels so damn good hearing someone speak your native language when living in a different country! Sadly in the 17 years I've been in the US, I've only met a handful people who speak my native language
