BADASS! I DONT EVER JUDGE A BAND OR A DRUM LINE! Being a former band member, drum major in high school it takes a lot to do this. Percussion is the HEART BEAT OF THE BAND. THESE YOUNG ADULTS ARE IN SCHOOL KEEPING UP GRADES, LEARNING SHOW MUSIC/STAND MUSIC/PARADE MUSIC/ AND THEIR CHOREOGRAPHY AND ON TOP OF THAT: DRUMLINE LEARNS AN ADDITIONAL 8 CADENCES FOR DRUMLINE COMPETITION. I LOVE IT. TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS REQUIRED.
Lane has grooves I guess but wasn't playing any complicated material. Huge gap in the degree of difficulty. Different styles of course considered but VSU took that..
As a percussionist Vstate had choppin all around the line along with funky grooves ...lane just had snares with funky grooves .....Vstate takes it as a line
Absolutely. VSU cadences were more technical and fluent. I love Lane but they really need to get rid of the sectional solos and work on cadences that have better dynamics and rudimental sequences.
Ok folks several things. 1. Lane is in the SIAC not SWAC. I think people get them confused cause the battle a lot of SWAC lines, but they are not in the SWAC. 2. For those who dont understand it's not a SWAC thing. It's more regional. 3. The reason why VSU seem like were running out of material is because they do more drum features than line up and battle while Lane does the opposite. There are other things I can add to it also

This is the kind of battle that you can't judge based on surface appeal because both lines are properly staying in their own lane with their personal style. Aggressive power versus cerebral finesse. You may as well have Jackson State battling Norfolk State and you have just as many people who prefer one over the other. I'm going to watch again and evaluate based on execution, technique, cleanliness and togetherness. This may very well be a draw.
Once again, different styles, but imma give it to NSU vs JSU. you would have to swap lines to make a good battle 🤔. NSU vs VSU & LC VS JSU. I'll wait on your investigation, you sound like you know what you talking about 👍. I'm just a fan of HBCU bands.
Before I read the comments I said the same exact thing, two totally different lines. Lane for the type of style they are was not bad at all Snares were pretty clean basses were loud af but you could hear what they were play and Lane cymbals killed. Lol VSU in their own right had a clean sound, balanced but for some reason I couldn't hear the basses all that well, also vsu played some crazy DCI material as always. Hard to judge this one.
Let’s go LC!!! Lane College is actually located in Jackson, TN for those wondering. It’s a small to midsize HBCU with linkage to the great Alex Halley. I love my LC!!
I enjoyed both drumlines! Both drumlines did great in their respective styles! But, I still have to say that VSU had the better drumline OVERALL! Split bass drum parts is always better in my opinion! Split bass drum parts are much harder to pull off. VSU's music was harder and they did what they did with movement which is difficult and VSU had a full line with tenor(s) aka quints. I also like how VSU's drums were tuned and they were simply more upbeat and entertaining! Lane on the other hand had better cymbals and had the better SNARE line and their snareline was their GREATEST strength! Their SNARES were cleaner, they played better visually, their technique was together, they were more uniform and their snares had more substance as in more notes to play. But, VSU's snares wasn't too far off and were great. So thus, overall VSU won this.
Whenever I see two lines battle it out with different styles I ask myself which line held it down and executed their style more effectively while properly displaying fundamentals. (Stick heights, uniformity, presence, cleanliness, parts locking in, etc.)
Two totally different styles. VSU is pretty much bongo/corps style and Lane is more of the down south funk style. Both have their positives and negatives.
I give the W to Lane. I saw some slip ups with VSU's execution. Sometimes stick heights weren't together, attacks were off and there was some dirt. Lane seemed more together and, from my view, had more command over their material.
The drumline with the hoodies. Their snares are tuned so "wet" that their sound gets swallowed up when the rest of the drumline is playing. There's minimal sound projection there. Also, imagine how good it would feel on their snare players' wrists if they could play on a tighter snare heads that would help rebound their sticks so they didn't have to work so hard for every single note.....Their bass drums are tuned like trash cans. Hitting both sides of a bass drum at the same time chokes out the resonating sound. Therefore, you may think it's louder, but the sound quality of a deep quality bass drum note is destroyed....The cymbal players had great movements.
Ima give this one to Lane! Virgina had a lot of dancing and gimmicks. Not as choppy as I would like coming from them. I heard slot of Oooo’s and Ahhhs coming from the crowd but not really much coming from Virginia. Their 3 Cymbals and off dancing snare line could of been better 🤦🏾♂️. I was thoroughly impressed by the amount of Rudimental finesse from Lane. They had hybrids, speed, power, and a uniformed look. Their basses/single tenors had chops. I could hear, see and feel their power. They represent themselves in their style very well. And as far as Virginia goes that was kinda shitty coming from a Technical Line. Too many loose ends needing to be cleaned up.
Best H.B.C. Percussion Challenge All Year. Both lines are extremely clean. Lane Cymbals. "BOOM" Orange Line Quads "BOOM" VERY TIGHT ALLLL THE WAT AAARRROOOUUUNNDD. Hats off two both Lines
Lane started out cleaner but I started to like VSU as the battle went on. Although Lane had seriously some of the best visuals, especially for cymbals. But VSU made me laugh and had fun watching them :D
Lane is a true HBCU. We don’t need the other clutter to chop and bang. Our style is funk and technicality. In the South where true HBCU bands reside this is sound that reigns supreme. Bloody Rain claims another victim. Coz Smith kills another
@@Gnosis639 what hes meaning to say is that Lanes percussion section has a true and traditional HBCU sound. Which you cant argue We all know that VSU is as HBCU as Lane.
Personally I don’t think there’s a winner or loser because of the diversity in play style between these two sections. It’s all based on someone’s preference and what style they like. With that being this was a great battle, we don’t get to see two high quality drumlines like V-State and Lane go head to head like this very often.
Lane is aggressive..they definitely won...they are good when they percussion section is big or small...i saw them go at it wit dega toe to toe when dega was huge an they was small. Keep it up Lane...Coming from a TnSU fan

SN: I'd encourage the snares in VSU to have a few recordings from the side view to check out the stick heights. Inches should be clearly defined for every type of stroke. I'm used to 3" for all taps, 6" for mf dynamics, 9" for accents and 12" for rim shots. 15" for "Monkey Drumming" heights. Whatever the VSU height system is, if It's engrained into everyone's hands then it will help with cleanliness and visual presentation.

Lane most definitely did not win but I saw someone say that Styles doesn’t mean anything but clearly they have two different styles and I think that does matter but I guess i’d rather see two different styles go at it then to Swac styles go at it because those sections souls kill the battle, I can see maybe one time but to keep doing it throughout the battle is dead 💀 Simple!
