In 2015, my Descendants hyperfixation was so bad that I actually convinced my english teacher to let me do my book report on the first book. Very bold of me to pull out my disney book in the middle of class in 7th grade lol
@@fridayguy2649 I got teased once or twice by a couple of the boys that were "too cool" for Disney at that point, but being 12, I had pretty much adopted Mal's personality into my own bc I had a crush on Dove Cameron and wanted to be her. So I was known to be a little bit of a bully and for that reason, not many people outside of my established friend group really talked to me. I'm sure that was just seen as another weird thing I did
That note about the Revlon lipsticks is so fascinating considering that Sofia Carson would later get a collaboration with them (with lipsticks!) It was always fun to see how the book series would add all of this intriguing lore and then they'd have to retrofit it to whatever new canon thing Disney put in the films or Wicked World, like how Hook has three kids across the different canons
I had no idea the books were made in tandem with the movies I thought it was an entirely different cannon this makes everything make so much more sense
I honestly feel like the books delved into some pretty dark themes/topics incredibly well, whereas they're glossed over in the films with a few lines and moments here and there. Straight-up child neglect, abuse, and endangerment. For Christ's sake, Evie is hinted to have body dysmorphia as a small example. Maleficent straight up tells Mal that from conception, she was a letdown, and her only hope of being worth anything is to follow literally everything her mom says, thus her mom's choice to give her a quarter of her name as a permanent reminder. I could go on and on about it but ultimately though flawed, the books and movies are good in their own way and offer something for every kid, particularly kids who don't have the best life.
good lord, those books make the world of descents even worse. i know we're supposed to gloss over it, but how do the good guys still believe they're good guys when they have the villains literally living in slums 💀 uh, accurate depiction of the modern carceral system i guess, sins of the father and all that
the passive aggression production notes remind me of a production of ANNIE that i was in as a child, where the script gave a a few different repeated reminders for the kid playing annie to learn her lines lol
I remember reading the third one right after descendants 2 came out! I would bring it to summer camp and read it when I was bored, and I have a very specific memory of reading it while two kids were fighting lol
im so glad to have found someone else who can’t visualize things when reading! i’ve always felt like i was crazy when ppl would ask me things like “how did u imagine this character?” and i just had to be like…”i didnt”😂😂
I’m 15 minutes in so I’m not sure if it’s ever brought up, and she’s a character that is only mentioned a few times, but the implications of Frollo having a daughter are TERRIFYING to me and they live in my mind rent free
I actually read the first book before the first movie came out. I must have been in middle school at the time and I remember being really hyped for the movie. Before this video I really had no memory of this book besides a vague memory of the characters climbing something (?) and I remember shipping Mal and Jay despite Disney’s best efforts. Other pre descendants stuff I remember was a web show about the auradon kids finding out the VKs were coming but it was all shot top down at a lunch table so you couldn’t actually see anyones faces. Also there was one particular teaser ad that I was obsessed with. This must have been really early into promoting descendants 1 because they didn’t use a song from the movie. They used the song wicked ones by Dorothy and I still stand by the fact that it is the best song in the franchise even though it technically doesn’t count. But it fits the movies so well and I love to think about the alternate universe where descendants had actual rock music.
Rise of Red had a trailer a cover of Joan Jett's Bad Reputation which is also on the album, so the tradition of sneaking actual rock music into Descendants continues!
never been a fan of these books but TRUST IF I had received that second book for christmas and madam mim showed up I would've become one. I loved that movie
"Did I say 'no purple dragons'?! DID I?!" Apparently, Arabella is not Ariel's daughter, she is the daughter of one of Ariel's sisters. "Two trees that are forming an X, like at In-N-Out" cracked me up.
In addition to the musical making Maurice a teacher at Auradon Prep, I like how it acknowledged that part of the Evil Queen's name is Grimhilde. I hope the Rise of Red movies could get a musical adaption, so I can see the full story in one sitting.
It's so nice that you talk about your aphantasia! So many people have no idea it exists, thanks for raising awareness As a fellow person with aphantasia this means a lot! ❤❤❤
1:15:37 I think it was a nod to exactly that. In TPATF he tricks everyone by showing them nuanced cards which can go any way he wants. Like (forgot his name but the guy whos been pushed all his life, then pushed by his wife), he could have read it as “if you take control of your life and self worth, you’ll be a rich man in confidence. However he read it as “you need to work with me for what I want to get what you want”.
Haven't watched the video yet but I think the fact descendants had books was a reason why people thought it was just a copy of ever after since they and monster high were the only doll lines at the time to have books (I do not know if this is true but that is what I remember as a child)
In elementary school we did a descendants “show” (there was definitely not a license yet so.. yikers). We didnt sing all the songs, and most kids just lip synced (not amazingly) to the songs. Except me and this other girl were deemed good enough at singing to actually sing to a karaoke version of the “evil like me” song. I really didnt like the girl i sang the song with, and i was determined to be better than her so I put on a big evil act… apparently when i started singing, all the parents jumped in their seats and my dad leaned over to the neighboring parents and whispered “thats my kid!!”
My family won a contest to go to a private Descendants 2 event where we got to meet Dove Cameron, Cameron Boyce and Thomas Dorothy, and my sister got her copy of one of the books signed!
I never got into Descendants back in the day, which surprised me because I loved the concept, just not the execution 😅 But now I'm fascinated by it and a lot of other convoluted, weird Disney Press books (like Kingdom Keepers and the Twisted Tales series). Side note, but every time I heard that Maleficent's scepter was called "the Dragon Eye", the Dragons: Race to the Edge girlie in me rose up from the depths and shouted "WHO SUMMONED ME?!"
I was always intrigued by the establishing conceit of these movies, but never saw any of them - mostly because I was just old enough to think they were too cringe for me, and not yet old enough to realize that I can enjoy whatever I want haha. With that said, I'm also old enough to have been let down by Kingdom Hearts, so I probably still won't ever get around to watching them 😂 I very much enjoy listening to your recap and thoughts! Side note, I usually listen to these while working, so I thought it was the kingdom of **Oregon** right up until I sat down and saw it written out in the notes for the musical 😂 I knew that didn't seem right haha.
1:30:33 Last week, I watched a recording of "Descendants The Musical Jr." and in that show, Evie's chemistry teachers are Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather.
Read all these books in 2020 and loved them all! The new movie and especially once I heard that Beyond the Isle of the Lost was coming out I got that right away and I loved that book too. It seems Melissa either didn’t have or at least held back on her exploration of lore just in case the most likely scenario of the movie(s) not using any lore specifically in the novel like what ended up happening later in the original run of book. But ‘Beyond’ gave such great context to D4s main character Red and also fleshed out how evil Queen of Hearts is which also adds layers of intrigue to how she became evil after seeing her younger self as Bridget.i hope Melissa gets to do even more books!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING THAT YOU DON’T IMAGINE THINGS FROM BOOKS! I ALWAYS FEEL SO ALONW BECAUSE ME ALWAYS READ WORDS SEE NO PICTURE FEEL SAD FACE 😢
I have the covid right now and your video are such a good comfort, and keep me going 💪🏻 So happy to have another one, and on descendant too, my favorite subject hehe!
Why are they so against magic? It seems silly when any bit of magic they “turn off” immediately causes more trouble. Wouldn’t it make sense if you learned how to use magic responsibly they’d be able to defend themselves better and most people wouldn’t fall for magic tricks?? Or is it just better for plot?
I loved these books they just came out with a 5th book for the characters of rise of red called Beyond the isle of the lost and I’m so excited to read it
37:54: DAMN! That's not what Ella meant when she said "Get Your Hands Dirty" Chad! I love how Chad was gonna be extra EXTRA messy in book 2! Would've been great to see that in the movies! Doug was right about this dude. 😂😂😂
8:07 Yeah, the same applies to me. Nothing is visualized, so I just stare at the explanations and are like: 👌 and then move on to the fun dialog and stuff
omg! so excited for this!! i didnt grow up with it so i dont know anything abt decendants, but i stocked this book series loads when i was a bookseller at B&N in 2018! excited to know what theyre abt finally:)
I remember reading the books when they first came out and being SO EXCITED (I was the target audience in every way shape and form). But now? no memory of plot, I remember getting really bored in the second book.
Omg Sarah I love your videos!! We have a lot of similar interests and I love when u tell us the lore of things. Ty for your research and these fun videos ❤
My biggest pet peeve of the Descendants world is the way these villains have such great evil schemes but give their kids such unoriginal names 😂 like why does Dr Facilier call his daughter Celia, like her names Celia Facilier 😅 so dumb. The characters don’t need similar names for us to know who their parents are because surely the story should tell us that.
MTI very much actually will send agents to theaters that licensed the show with a script in hand and give you a warning if they see you've changed things. Yes its crazy, but if they blacklist you you cant never license from them again.
I'm not super fond of the Descendants franchise (of course, that could mostly be because I had stopped watching Disney Channel by the time the movie came out, so I'm not nostalgic for it the way I am for something like The Cheetah Girls, High School Musical, or Camp Rock, and we all know that the Camp Rock movies were pretty cringy), but I love that they actually made the books prequels that adds interesting lore to the Descendants universe instead of just making it a retelling of the movies, like what they did with HSM and a bunch of other DCOM movies or even some Disney shows. I remember being in like second grade and buying the High School Musical 2 book at the book fair, because I guess I thought, "Hmm, I like High School Musical. I guess I'll get the HSM book." and then realizing that the book was completely useless. There was nothing they added to the story, like extra side plots or expanded lore. It was just an exact retelling of a movie I had already watched. 😭 To be fair, I shouldn't have just blindly bought the book without thinking about the choice. I don't know what I was expecting. I know Disney made these books because they knew kids would buy them and it was easy money, but it's just so lame. It's so lazy and uncreative. The Descendants books having prequel books is so much smarter (like you said). Disney still makes money, it encourages kids to read, and the fans can actually appreciate the books and not feel like they just wasted money on something that just retells the exact same story but in book form.
So was king Adam 16 when he pitched the idea of joining all the kingdoms into the United States of Auradon? Bc if the Isle was made 20 years ago he would have had to have been in his late teens early 20s right?

I was in a production of Descendants, it was freaking awesome (i was in grade 11). I wouldn’t say it fixed things but said that it took the a plot of the first movie and the b plot of the second movie. I remember while we were doing it, making fun of it was out favourite part. Like, it’s kinda trash, but it was OUR trash and we loved it. Btw I was Evie number 2. Im glad she mentioned the changes from the musical, like the reminders of the stakes. Wow, I’m realizing just how many books I read as a kid that were actually just ads or tie-ins for movies. Also I have aphantasia, too! Ruined reading for me when I learned about it 😅 thanks for sharing! 🤍

Sofia Carson narrates the audiobooks and it makes them so much more fun and whimsical.
Where can you find these audiobooks?
@dragondice9201 libraries might have them but I bought mine on Audible when they started coming out.
School of secrets is also a mini series on RUclips about the royals before the start of the school year
Yes! I mentioned that series in my first ever descendants video, it’s silly that they reused the name
Lil' Shang sounds like a rapper lol
