Building a Guitar Amp from a Kit

- Making a tube guitar amp from a Mojotone kit. The kit is a copy of the 1950s vintage Gibson GA-5 practice amp. The amp is 5 watts with a 12AX7 preamp tube and a 6V6 power tube. This is not really a how-to video so much as it is a demonstration of how a novice can reasonably expect to complete a build like this. This video shows the electronics. A subsequent video will show the making of the cabinet.

I've been watching your knife videos for years, searched "how to make an guitar amp" for ideas and you pop up. Not sure how I missed it.
I loved the electrical excursion away from knife making. Furthermore, speaking as an musician and electrical engineer, you did an amazing job.
That amps a great platform for pedals as you may know. A tube screamer type pedal or even an eq pedal (best secret weapon) will definitely help give you the mid push you're looking for. Great playing and great choice for an amp kit!!
As an electronics guy, I can assure you that the manufacturer has picked an inconvenient build order for the kit. Normal practice is to start with the lowest profile parts and build up to the tallest which makes access so much easier. Secondly, drilling out solder that is clogging up a hole is normal practice; iv been involved in the industry for over a decade and I still do it on an almost weekly basis. Overall you did a great job with the kit; It looks and sounds amazing.
Totally dig this! Awesome vid!!!
As a professional guitar player I have often thought of building an amp. But I never could talk myself into it. But I think you did quite well.
Thanks for the video.
Easily $350 worth of fun. I'm here for the knife making but as a guitar player myself, I really appreciate the amp build. I've built some pedals from kit, and a hifi amp but haven't done a guitar amp yet. Thanks for the inspiration. Nice playing by the way!
I've built a few Mojotone amp kits. I like them. So far it sounds like your experience with the directions is on par with mine lol I'll take point to point over turret boards
Knives, cymbals and tube amps. Nice!👍
I had NO idea you liked to play, and I thought you were just about knives, who knew!?!,thanks for sharing....
What a project. I liked it. Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
I had a good friend who was into electronics and he made me the first electric guitar amplifier I ever played back in 1962. Only speakers we had were two 6X9 ovals from a car radio and even wired a diode into the speakers for fuzz tone ! Sounded dang good. I was an instant rock star in my mind, lol. You play pretty good guitar Mr. Sorrells.
Ok... I thought I was having a stroke. I like to watch knife videos and amp videos.
I was very confused at first by the cross over. When I saw Walter Sorrells and building amp.
That tone was EXCELLENT.
Walter - Great video. As a guitar player, this was awesome! Thanks.
Very cool, I usually am here for the knifes, but it was cool to see you make a guitar amp. Just a guy with average electrical knowledge building a sweet sounding little amp.
This was awesome! I dug the trip down memory lane and the side project. Always grateful for all the content. :)
I love the hand thing you do where you throw your hands out in front of you as if your spitting some bars.
Walter get DOWN with your
Bad self, it goes to show you
Makers are of many talents
Outstanding..Tootall
So excited, love guitar
great sound!
mr sorrells with the switch up! nice job sir
stream guitar on twitch ya talented ole timer
Sounds like me when I made my first knife cursing at everything
great video and tone
..glad you still alive...
Great amp building video! Subscribed!
You get so much more value when building you own amps. If you start small and take your time, you can work your way up into bigger, more complicated circuits.
A word of warning, It’s very addictive and you’ll end up with a pile of really cool amps.
That was awesome!! Killer tone to!!!!
Awesome! And damn Walter, you can play, mate!
Dang, one of the coolest guys of all time!
Hell, you haven't met me..?
Hahaha
A refreshing departure (temporarily at least) from, and the back to knives later.
*"... slightly sounder footing..."*
Excellent word choice.
Thanks for the video. This gave me a more realistic review of building the amp BEFORE I put 4 kits in the hands of 11-14 year old students.
The missing nasalness may be down to the speaker. Good stuff, Walter, thanks!
Man, if I could have just a 1/16 of the equipment I've lost over the years. Now I just do it all on my computer(drums & all. I do have a set too). Dad was a jazz bassist, I was a musician before I could walk. Most don't like it as background music for knifemaking, but oh well... Got my degree as a computer tech, who knew there was another RUclipsr/knifemaker/musician that liked electronics too, hahaha. Hope all is well, take it easy.
As an electronics tech, I have never heard of AC described that way....funny as Hell and I liked it :)
great video! I look forward to the case video!
Fancy cords and you did just like a good knifemaker would.. most enjoyable.
I would say it was a great success.
nice Gibson cat. glad you kept it
Cool project! I've watched plenty of your knife making videos and made one knife...handle. I didn't know you were a fellow guitar player though. One of these days I'm going to do an amp myself, so your video will no doubt help when that happens.
Tubes,,,,the longer they heat up the better they sound. I just sold my last two electric git fiddles. My 61 Melody Maker and my 64 Gretsch electric git fiddle. I had way too many amps over the last 40 years. I stuck with the small Fender Blues Jr. tube amp. Took the factory Celestion speaker out and put a 12” speaker in from a Framus stack amp. Get a simple MXR distortion pedal for your amp. It’ll kick good. Good build brother. Pick on.
Awesome 👌
I was hoping for the Hawaiian shirt Walter. 😒. Oh well. I'm not sure how you find time for martial arts and knife and sword making plus guitar playing. But it looks like you can do about anything. Great video as always.
In the category of never sell, throw away or wreck anything, my first practice amp was a Fender tweed pattern that came with a cigarette burn on top. I soon became the Bass Guy with a 5 speaker Gibson that should have had 6. I currently have 3 basses and a 6 string built by me, hatched from kits with upgrades from Seymour Duncan and Emerson Custom. Chinese electo parts really suck. don't accept a ride in their next space ship. Anyway, I have a condition I will just call the Yips. Soldering connections even dealing with small screws using a magnetic tip driver is a bitch. You revealed your age and I am not greatly older so enjoy it and do all you can while you can because the loss is hard to take. .Stay well my friend.
great vid
Great job !!! Now do a brown deluxe or a tweed vibrolux!!!

Not a huge fan of amps under 100 watts but I've actually heard good things about these. I play a 300 watt Orange Dual Dark clone that a buddy built. It pushes air on 2, also custom volume knob goes to 11.
Awesome. My wife has a 47 (I'm pretty sure) Gibson her grandfather left her.
Cool video, loved it.
Knife making videos are awesome. Excursions are pretty great too :) Liquid electrical tape could have been your friend? Whatever, it sounds great and even goes up to 11.
I disagree. Liquid electrical tape It seems like a good thing but really it's not all t's cracked up to be. Doesn't stay in place very well
What do I do with the leftover parts.
Does that one go to 11? Those were some good sounding riffs!!
Thanks for this video. Since I’m trying to decide if I want to build an amp like this I found your experience interesting. I’ve a similar journey as you having my ‘50s tube amp discarded by my older sister about 40 years ago. My background and education is in electrical engineering technology focused on systems design and support. Even so I dread the idea of a point to point build even though in my youth I built a Dynaco 80 kit and a Heathkit preamp (I still have them). My question is did you get what you wanted from this kit build? Did it fill a gap in achieving a missing guitar sound?
So when are you starting a jam channel?
Can i ask pls where you bought kit cause i need some help, i am doing my final practice exam and i need this
I was waiting for some Free Bird
Does the volume go to 11?
Shouldn’t the volume control go to 11?
😂I love this
"...I did not, and I did not."
Who are you and how did you get in here?
I'm a locksmith, and I'm a locksmith.
Well that was unexpected 😅.
It's an amp made out of knives tho'. 😎
Makes me want to spend two hours assembling my own amp....lol.
Nasal anger is such a subjective thing.
That Gibson dooms.
Hilarious!!
How is she today one year later?
nice dirty tone at max volume.
I can feel the pain. Hope that amp at least found a new home with some dumpster diver..
