The Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin: A weekend of love, music, and psychedelic chaos

- In 1970, the Atlanta Pop Festival promised three days of peace, love, and music, but my experience was far from tranquil. From dropping acid with my rock 'n' roll boyfriend to meeting The Allman Brothers backstage, every moment felt surreal. I witnessed Jimi Hendrix perform his legendary Star-Spangled Banner and heard Janis Joplin’s haunting voice under the stars. But the euphoria turned into a bad trip, capped by a terrifying car ride with Gregg Allman. Relive this wild, psychedelic weekend as I navigate love, music, and survival during the South's version of Woodstock.

It’s not personal. It’s showbiz.
Acting is a journey, not a destination.
Showbiz! Ah, the glamor.
Nothing is fair in love, war, or showbiz!
Jill, yet another phenomenal story. Listen, the peace and love has always been here. It still is. That vibe those of us shared so deeply during those years is still alive in us. Never forget. ❤🙏🌻☮
I completely agree. Never forget is right.
What a story! What a life! Duane Allman! Glad you made it back from the festival and to tell us about it.☮☮☮☀
Me, too. I've always felt protected in some way because I've had a few close calls. Thanks for being here.
Yes. "Love, joy and hope." 🌈
You are a bona fide raconteuse!!
👏 🫂 ❤
Thanks, Rebekah. I haven't heard that term in a long time and I love it.
Love your stories. You’ve lived a super interesting life.
Thanks for being here, Michelle. I appreciate you.
✨️🌈This is so amazing, Jill❣️ It occurred to me you have finally reached an enormous audience of limitless potential. How exciting💥I am so happy to have worked with you. I am also reminded of the level of talent we encountered ( most of the time! ) on set.😁💜🎭 HappyvNew Year🎆🐱🧡
Thanks so much, Julia. I'm so glad you're here and enjoying my stories. Happy New Year and blessings to you.
Super cool !!
Love this !!!
Thanks, Greta. I appreciate you being here.
Love your descriptive storytelling Jill! So entertaining!
Thanks so much.
I was also there in Byron in July, 1970. So many bands playing day & night, I don't remember them all.
When Jimi played, while you were so close, I was way back at the back of the grounds, on top of a semi trailer, but was also tripping. Couldn't see much, but his music was loud and clear, and then the fireworks!
Living in Atlanta, I saw Allman Brothers several times with Duane and Janis twice, once close to the stage. I still miss her.
A week later I got busted for pot - story for another time.
Thanks for telling your story so well.
OMG! That's amazing. Hotlanta was the cool place to be. I still miss her too. My next video is about my encounter with Janis. Sorry you got busted but how great that you saw so many great bands and musicians.
💜🎶
I was laughing so much I have hard time writing this. Thank you Jill. Love you. You’re awesome.❤
Oh, good. I love to make people laugh. It's so healing.
Jill, you are just fantastic. I felt transported to that day at the festival, what a trippy and amazingly eventful experience. Thank you for taking us along!
Thanks so much, Susan, for coming along. I so appreciate it.
You're a poet to my soul! You take me back to another time. When peace and love were the objective. I don't know you, but you made me miss you.
Thanks so much, Jami. I'm so glad you're here. Peace and love is really what it's all about.
Great Story! I felt like I was there! Have the Happiest of New Years!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks so much for being here, and all the best for the New Year!
Peace, love and rock n' roll! Great story. And you survived to tell it! Happy New Year, my friend.
Happy New Year to you too, Sally. I'm so glad I lived to tell the tale.
Excellent story.
Thanks so much, James.
Great blast from your past and WOW! Backstage tripping with the Allman brothers band ! Janis and Jimi? Too much. Love your style ❤😂😊
Thanks so much! I'm releasing my Janis Joplin experience next. I think you'll like it. Thanks for being. here.
...love the honesty.....great story......
Thanks so much for watching. That means a lot.
Happy new year, Jill! I am looking forward to your stories each week. Thanks so much.
Happy New Year. Thanks so much for being here.
Peter was a stone cold fox. Oh, the way you describe him. Wow. 🤩
He was. What was I thinking??? My ex-boyfriend was such a jerk, and Peter was so kind.
☮
Thanks and sending peace back to you.
What an experience, Jill!
So glad that in the longrun, you came out unscathed!
That festival was quite the happening. Wish I could have been there to hear Hendrix play and to hear Joplin live.
Beautiful pix of you with the long hair by the way!
Loved to listen to Joplin back in the day. Irreplaceable. I can hear her singing Bobby McGee in my head right now.
Drugs were very easy to get back in the day but I am glad that I stayed away. I would have ended up on a one way trip for sure!
........Have you watched All That Heaven Allows, yet Jill?
Eternal peace and love from the
Connecticut Yankee!
💖🌈😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻🌈💖
I haven't watched it yet, but it's on my list. So much going on this time of year. I'm glad I got out unscathed too. Not everyone did as we know.
Riveting story!! 💚
Thanks so much.
Hi Jill, What a great story, You are the best story teller. I never got to meet Jimi Hendrix, but I did get to meet Peter Richards, He's the artist who created the album cover with the little bird flying towards his guitar. My boyfriend and I got to hang out withe Peter for a time. He was deaf or partially deaf. Somehow, we were able to communicate with him. The whole air was filled with a Jimi Hendrix vibe. So much so that my boyfriend talked the local theatre owner into showing the Jimi Hendrix film "All is by my side." There were about four other people in the theatre and the three of us digging on Jimi Hendrix and his music. That was a good rime.
I'm curious. Where and when was that? Very cool.
@@jilldaltonnyc7545 "All Is By My Side" is a bio-pic starring Andre 3000 as Jimi. It came out maybe 8 or 10 years ago. It covers his first few months in England after getting discovered in New York and before he started recording and became Jimi Hendrix the rock guitar god.
I think that was on the cover of Hendrix’s Crash Landing album.
@@jilldaltonnyc7545 My memory is a little foggy on where the theatre was located. It was probably Bar Harbor ,Maine but could have been Bangor, Maine. The year was 1977 or 1978,
@@bartjoy5179 I think you are right. II'm going to see if I can get some of his music on Pandora.
Bhahahahaha Jill!!! Whoa!! What an incredible story!! I wanted desperately to go to college, didn’t get to (my mom told me college was for rich people). So I burned up the miles between my hometown of Springfield Ohio ( yes, THAT Springfield Ohio) going to a multitude of rock concerts-between there and Dayton and Cincinnati. On one such occasion, I was at the very top of the then named Colosseum with my boyfriend and my sister. We were on our feet on bleachers, rocking out to-I can’t remember what band now, when I suddenly sat down. My younger (7 years) sister asked me what was wrong? Why had I stopped singing and sat down? I told her “I don’t know. I just don’t feel anything.” She said authoritatively-“Come on” and hustled me down 50 flights of bleachers and 50 more stairs outside. She told me to breathe deeply. She said I had just been overcome by marijuana. I snapped out of my top of the building marijuana induced haze and gasped!!
Suzy Straight me had succumbed to drugs without even trying!!!
And that is my famous drug story, but I can’t compete with yours!! Can’t wait for your next instalment!!
Here's the thing. At that time, I was going to the University of SC in Columbia. My in-state tuition was $225.00 a semester. Can you imagine.
@@jilldaltonnyc7545No! Oh my gosh! I SHOULD have gone to OSU like a bunch of my classmates!
Love how you describe your pop festival and your smug roommate. She was a buzzkill. The Allman Bros! Jimi! Janis! Take care, Jill. Peace and love.
Sounds like the roommate was probably jealous as hell of Jill - her beauty, her boyfriend and her adventures.
Peace & love to you too. Thanks for being here.
Maybe. I had never thought of that, but I had no idea I was attractive. Youth is wasted on the young. Who said that?
Wow That sounds Like a Blast!! I love Music! I Love shows I hate crowds. weird right? But when I'm at a concert it is about the Music the band. The crowd is just back ground noise. GREAT STORY!
That's true. The crowd fades into the background. Thanks for watching.
@@jilldaltonnyc7545 Janis Joplin Omg I am so Jealous.
You are so lucky to have had the chance to see all these amazing musicians! I'm sorry to hear about the bad trip, though. Your rock and roll boyfriend sounds nice -- whatever happened to him?
It was such a magical time, and I cherish it. My boyfriend and I reconnected a few years ago. He's still in SC, married with kids, and we're FB friends. We both understand that we shared a unique experience. Thanks for being here.
@@jilldaltonnyc7545 💞💞
Wonderful!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Geraldine! Thanks.
I felt like I was on a bad acid trip with you. Love your animated story telling.
Oh, no. Thanks, Lisa.
Jill : you got to write a book ! These stories are way too good !!! Rocket
I did start a book called Army Brat, and this story was in it. We'll see. Writing a book is so time-consuming, but thanks, Rocket.
What a great story Jill!
Thanks so much. I'm glad you liked it.
I attended the Allman Brothers concert somewhere in New York City years and years ago I went with a couple of my girlfriends and our seats were in the balcony, joints were being passed around one right after another. The next thing I know my girlfriends are taking my hand saying come on and we ended up in the third row down on the floor level they had the best backdrop screen I’ve ever watched
Sounds like an amazing experience.
Another movie!!! Are you writing these down!!! There should be no one else but you narrating. Love your stories. May 2025 be yours. Thank you!
Thanks so much. I want Netflix or Apple to do my stories as a series. Just putting it out there. Happy new year!
Another great Sunday with Jill, or is it hippie Jill?🤗☮ I also had my share of dropping acid and attending rock concerts. Always an experience. I was once offered to go to a party by one of the Chamber Brother's(The time has come today band). As soon as they saw my boyfriend, they rescinded the offer. Wonder why? Drank with Grace Slick. She was fun, but WILD!!! Went backstage at a Johnny Rivers show. Nice guy. There's many more I've met. Those were the days when you could get backstage easy or see them at some bar in town. Times have changed. We have changed. No longer bullet proof and fearless. I envy that you had the chance to see Janis and Jimi. What greatness!!! I did see The Allman Brothers in the early 90's. No drugs then. Maybe I had drank some tasty beverages before the show. I have to admit, we didn't stay the entire show. Every song, Dickie Betts did a really long solo. It got boring after a while. Greg was still good. My concert going days are behind me now, but what memories! Maybe your Johnny did dodge a bullet back then by not going to NY with the band, but I bet he has wondered over the years 'What If'. You have a wonderful New Years Jill. See you next Sunday.😺💖
I saw the Allman Brothers when they recorded their live album , yes I did !
Saw the Who perform Tommy at Carnegie hall .
Never caught Jimi though....wish I did.
@@marvymarier8988 I would have loved to have been at the live recording of that album. That's a great record. When I saw them in the early 90's it was right before they split up for good. They were just going through the motions. It was not a memorable concert.-
Times have really changed. Plus, it helps to be barely twenty and up for the adventure. That's what being young is about.
I loved The Who, but I don't think I ever saw them. I saw Led Zepplin, Johnny Winter, Joe Cocker, Creedence, Sly, and many more.
Too bad. By then they were over it.
Ah, I was there in Byron and Janis did not take the stage that I know of. She is not on the bill either. So there was no 'make history' for her. The Allman's closed two nights and Jimi the third. The days were super-hot, not perfect. But then, I wasn't on acid or anything, just music.
You're right. I went back and checked and Janis played the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1969. I attended both of the festivals so in my mind I melded the two together as one. Thanks for that.
I am so glad you told this story about your hippie exploits and meeting the Allman Brothers etc.; I was hoping you would. Holy cow, I can't believe you got to see both Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin live and in the same concert! What an experience. BTW when you got to the part of the story where you said, "So Gregg Allman was driving us home..." before you said anything else I laughed out loud and said, "Yeah, that can't be good". LOLOLOL Thank heavens you all made it home in one piece. Your college roommate sounds like such a prissy jerk and she broke the college roommate code: if your roomie is off on an adventure and you know what they're doing, if their parents call you always find a way to cover for them and at least you don't make the situation worse. As to dropping acid, that's kind of before my time and I probably would not have fared well with it myself ( my mind would find something worriesome immediately knowing me, leading to a "bad trip") in fact I once had a very bad experience inadvertently with a hash brownie ( actually a hilarious story in retrospect). But I'm glad you survived your acid trip mentally intact as well. Anyway thanks for sharing all these great stories with us and I hope you have a Happy and Healthy New Year!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the story! I'm also grateful I survived. I had a few close calls. Thanks for being here and Happy New Year to. you too. Yes, the roommate was not my choice. She was selected for me and I lived off campus after that. LOL
Good story ❤
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
you should write a book
Yes, I know. Maybe at some point I'll finish the two I have in the works.
You're such a great story teller. No wonder you became a successful actress. So would we know Johnny's band? Must have been a good musician for Duane Allman to invite him to help record their first album. He must have been very wise, and knew himself well enough to sense he would be doomed if he took Duane up on his offer.
I doubt you'd know his band, Freedom. They were very popular and well known in SC but fell apart like many bands. Thanks for being here.
Beautiful shirt
Thanks! It's really old, but I can't get rid of it. And I thought it was perfect for this.
“You OK?” lol!
I hope so. lol. Thanks for watching.
Far out story, Jill. ✌🏼😉
Cool, man. So glad you liked it.
It’s always been about hate, war, and death, even more so in 1970. Peace, love, and music-sadly-was but a mere distraction from reality. I was 13, and remember hearing ads on the radio promoting Woodstock. During those years, I wanted to be 20 and like Jill. But by the time I turned 20, we had John Travolta and Saturday Night Fever. Ugh!
It was a unique time in our history. And I still believe in peace, love, and music.
wow that was some serious hit of acid and yet you remember it all. Weren't the Allman Brothers amazing? I love their music. Thanks for sharing, Jill, i hope the sex was good (too bad about your uptight jealous roommate)
I remember the highlights at least. Thanks for watching.
The most angry people in the world are those too afraid to live their own lives; and then resent others for having the courage to live their lives.
That's a great quote. Is that yours? So much truth there.

It sounds as if you still believe in your altered perspective of what happened.
