One important technique for tig welding stainless steel is to get the puddle started quickly and to get moving quickly before too much heat builds up.
Because stainless steel is not very thermally conductive, heat does not dissipate quickly and its easy to overheat.
In this video, you will see getting a puddle started quickly at 120 amps and after 2 or 3 dabs, reducing amperage to around 90 amps on .120 wall stainless tubing.
Also toward the end of the video, you will see the importance of purging the back side of stainless steel that is fully penetrated.

Dear viewers. Tig welding .065 stainless tubing for my sailboat railing, Davits and hard top. I found purging made my welds less grey and more silver with some pink and blues. I’m running 60 amps 3/32 tung, #10 cup and 1/8 filler. I got some .045 wire and #12 cup on the way. I got 6 grand in materials and tools into this project with the roller , bender , welder, buffing supplies, and tubing. Got it all bent and mocked up, Now it’s showtime haha. Thanks for the videos! Still trying to conceive how Jody can tig .065 at 100 amps. Master Jody.

I started stick welding 45 years ago, then learned MIG that was an easy transition but my TIG welding SUCKS. I don't think everyone learning to TIG is cut out for this. But Jodi must TIG weld in his sleep to, because his results look flawless. Kudos to you for devoting your time in an effort to teach us dummies to learn TIG.:)

RUclips shouldn’t even have an option for idiots to choose “unlike” the information is free for God’s sake. Do you see that little “v” at the top left corner, hit that instead of “unlike”. Those individuals are upset that they can’t use an app to lay beads.
Thanks for all the hours it takes to figure out your lighting for the videos, the hours of recording, the hours of editing, then literally giving all of it to us for free. Keep up the amazing work. Stay up!

    10:17 & onward is a valuable lesson.
What i have the most difficulty with is getting a puddle started and managing to turn the heat down quick enough & get moving without sugaring the backside.
It's also hard to get a nice "wet" puddle with stainless steel . The puddle tends to ball up / solidify if I back off on the heat too much. Sticky filler ain't fun !
    This one is a re-watcher.
    Thank you :)

Just as an FYI: I noticed your tungsten point is very short and stubby. When running DC, you are able to weld thicker steel at a lower amperage & have finer control of the arc and puddle if you shape your tungsten point a little longer. Maybe 5/8" to 3/4" back and then down to a fine point. An aerospace weldor showed me that and I've been sold ever since.

ALWAYS enjoy ur vids. Particularly the SS ones. One tip we use at work
We use 95/5 argon /hydrogen on the torch. Straight Argon on ID purge
This helps greatly for penetration on fusion welds on Sanitary:hygienic welds especially when u may have high sulphur content

I just got me an ahp 201, I’m so lost with what accessories to get, it comes with a 17 rotoflex torch with a 9 head as well. I’d like to get some of the glass or larger cups but not for sure what I need. I don’t want to buy unnecessary parts for it , cause that money can go to filler and coupons. It’d be awesome if you could do a video just on torch parts, you know, you need this for that, if you have this then you don’t need that type of deal. Love your videos!

Hi Jody, my company has a product that requires a t pipe joint just like here. The difference is that the weld is required to be full penetration ( full 3mm wall thickness) due to corrosion and fatigue reasons. If you still have this pipe, could you make a video showing the fit up and weld to get full penetration with this pipe? Our supplier seems to be struggling with this.

“Sugaring”... so we saw on the plate that you got sugaring. Also..on the inside of the pipe there wasn’t any sugaring. I assume because of the amperage used. What about on the inside of the other pipe where we might’ve seen some heat affected area? Might there have been some sugaring in there?

    Metallurgical questions surrounding stainless.
Did some socket welds for some refrigeration piping a while back. Used 309L-16 SMAW for 304 pipe to carbon steel/low alloy valves and couplings. All 304 to 304 done with 308L-16. I had to weld on some threaded 316 nipples as well and I couldn’t really decide which rod to go with so I used 308L-16. Metallurgically what should I usefor SMAW/GTAW welding 304 to 316 stainless? Appreciate any feedback Jody!

I have to say. The thing that I hate the most is using a pedal. I learned a long time ago that pedals are for bench welding or beginners. The thing that pisses me off the most is no body knows how to weld with anything other than scratch start or a pedal. Why? Teach people how to use a button or finger control. In the field they need to know how to do it and how it works!!!

    • @buildthings79
      @buildthings79 4 года назад +1

Alot of finger controls are terrible. Lincoln's rubber track and Miller's roll dial are god awful for precision work . Trying to keep the puddle perfect while rolling down the wheel or track. Unless you go with a independent tig control. Ive just learned to use a pedal on a ladder. (Little Giant ladder with hook-on platform) or under my knee on the floor doing upside down work. But also all of my tig welding is one off joints and no way to practice.
