So appreciate players such as yourself Carl. I'm 56, playing forever, then see and hear stuff like this, renews my love of the instrument. Keep on, keepiin on my friend. Blessings, Al
I swear you rented a studio for a week, recorded 1,900 lesson videos, then released them over time. Love the videos man. You're always on point. Thanks
Thank you Carl for such a great song... Open D tuning, wow, never knew. I just knew that I couldn't figure it out when it came out and eventually forgot about it. Not any more.
Perfect! This demo is absolutely perfect! Thanks Carl. I so appreciate this demo of "Sailing". I am doing fine on guitar, but, I am getting lazier lately. Playing for 57 years at 72 years old. I have arthritis starting in my hands and a lot of my playing has to be re-invented now. Sad but true. (Hey kids, play your asses of while you still have your youth!) So, I used to play this perfectly in a band back in 1979 when the song was still fairly fresh. I scoped it out perfectly on guitar in regular tuning, and it was a mind and hand f**k! But, I had it. But, now, I can't come close. I decided to surf out here and see what I could find to maybe give me some options. Then, I fell upon your video here. Who knew that Cross was using an open D?! Doh!!! Now, it all comes clear. I can do it and am recording it tonight. I do a solo gig with my own backup tracks and I have always loved this song (as does everyone else on the planet!). So, thank you so much for helping to put me on the perfectly right track to honouring this song as it should be. My best appreciation is returned to you as a "Subscribe" and a "Like". Thanks man. Cheers.
After watching an older video of a Christopher Cross live concert I decided to see if there were any tutorials on his music.Wow!! I struck gold. I remember years ago trying to play this tune in standard tuning. It was a pretty weak rendition. Thanks for that perfectly laid out lesson.
Superb!!! Alternate tunings are such a mystery to me. I had no idea this song was not in standard. No wonder it’s impossible to play that way. Such a brilliant composition all around. Lyrically musically and emotionally it’s a timeless masterpiece of writing.
Thanks for sharing this. I’ve wanted to learn this for a long time and I can always appreciate the accurate transcription from the album. I hate wading through tons of tabs on the internet that are all wrong and I can’t get to that spot of joy that you get when you know you’re playing it right and then you are in tune and harmony with the guys that actually wrote and recorded this wonderful hit.
This was great! I'm playing this with a sax player in a couple of weeks and didn't know CC was in open D. Thanks for helping me out--excellent explanation, Carl!
That was a wonderful and brilliantly done lesson worthy of such a beautiful song. Thank you so much. I can hardly wait to get this one down, although I'm clearly gonna have to pull out an electric, as this one is tough on my rusty fingers. Again, thanks so much. Happy Holidays, Carl..
Glad this was done, have the sheet (which doesn't have the altered tuning) in the sheet version it also doesn't have the piano interlude, which reminds me of Steely Dan's Black Cow which also doesn't have the piano interlude in it's sheet
Guitar 363 I love your Guitar lessons I all ways try you first and for having such rare songs it crushes me when you dont have certain ones. Keep it going thanks. LOL
I’m not sure what gear Chris used to record Sailing, but in all the live videos here’s playing a Fender double neck with the entire song being played on the 12 string neck. Now I’m about to sit down and detune a freaking 12 string to D.
Awesome Lesson as always, Playing it with a Neunaber Inspire Pedal, Just Awesome and a joy to play. I had a 2nd guitar in the planning and properly one will be in this tuning.
EXCELLENT tutorial! But please always begin with a full rendition (possibly omitting repeated verses, etc.) For a lot of us, that's all we need, and for the rest of us, it helps to practice along with and put the thing together.

Very nice, thanks man . thanks for unraveling this mystery
@GuitarLessons365Song Did Christopher Cross double track the guitar part or is it some type of chorus or Eventide effect that gave him that iconic guitar sound?
One cool things you'll find the once you get into open D tuning if you go back and look at this lesson is you could play almost 80% of the Bee Gees 70s music because Barry Gibb wrote almost all of the stuff in open D tuning...you can one finger cord away on jive talkin staying alive Night fever just get down and have some fun long as you got it in that tuning just saying.💃🕺
Small fix, for 3rd verse (after first chorus), at 11:00 in the video: instead of 4 bars of x0222x x0234x, it's 2 bars of that and then 2 bars of 4x222x 4x234x. It only matters if you're playing the bass line, of course.
Hi! Thx so much for this tuto! but how the f...did you manage to tune your guitar with a floyd and getting no bad tuning? I got a strat with light strings from the origin. Just cannot tune in open D.....always moving and impossible to play.....
Your a very gifted teacher and musician! This sounds so amazing! Suggestions to add to every lesson. Please tell us the song key, time signature, and amp settings or effects used for optimal quality sound. A play through at the end at full tempo would be great. Thanks!
This song is the musical version of Bob Ross. I love it.
Perfect description!🤣👍
