A couple of years ago one of the local theater chains did a Don Bluth weekend, a friend and I went to watch All Dogs Go To Heaven with Bluth and Gary Goldman, get stuff signed, and be there for a Q&A. It was fun, but yeah, Bluth seemed really tired and jaded. Goldman was delightful and engaging though! I got their art book and the film book for this signed!
I really enjoyed Elizabeth Hartmann's performance as Mrs. Brisby. I loved her performance in NIMH and in A Patch of Blue, it's tragic we lost a great actress like her.
I was fortunate enough to find a great condition copy of this movie on DVD at a second hand store a little more than 6 years ago. Still works great and very glad I have it
NIMH, Land before Time and An American Tail are all up there as some of my favorite animations. The best non-disney disney films (along with Anastasia, which is funnily enough owned by disney now)
@@HobGungan I'm aware. As a former Disney worker, he was amazing at fighting them at their own game (minus a few flubs like titan ae and troll in central park)
@@Codes_Comics Hey, Titan A.E. was awesome. I'd say either Thumbalina or Rock-A-Doodle was his second-weakest, though there are things to appreciate in both.
@@HobGungan i totally forgot about thumbelina, fair enough. (Also i didnt mean that titan ae was bad, it just didnt sell as well as they wanted. In fact iirc that was his last theatrical release)
One of my favorite films. “Cute little animals going on fun and whimsical but also somewhat dark fantasy adventures” is one of the best genres out there and I’m sad the era for this genre has kinda passed. Secret of Nimh, The Tale of Despereaux (which I really wish had a better movie tbh, it’s my favorite book), Warrior Cats, Guardians of GaHoole. I want more of that kind of stuff. But sadly idk if it’s what kids are into nowadays. At least we can still look back on all these great books and movies and appreciate them. 😌
The movie that got Steven Speilberg into animation. Disney was very angry with Don Bluth for quitting the company to make this so they tried to crush it, it was initially slated to be released in about 1000 theaters but Disney threatened theaters that they would withhold the rights to show ET or Tron if they showed NIMH so it only ended up starting in about 100 theaters. It ended up turning a profit anyway. Jerry Goldsmith introduced it to Speilberg and he liked it so much he hired Bluth and made An American Tail and the Land Before Time with him. Without this movie you likely don't ever get Animaniacs, Balto...
Secret of NIMH is the best Don Bluth movie by far. Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and An American Tail are all masterpieces, but Secret of NIMH was probably the most influential for creator driven animation. It made Don Bluth a separate entity from Disney.
It's really got the strongest plot, all the rest kinda seem to lose their way at some point, but for this movie you're always with Mrs. Brisby following the chain of events
I absolutely LOVE this movie, its what made me fall in love with animation. I have some of the original studio sketches of Mrs. Brisby and some of the animation cells!
I don't know if she's a Brony anymore, but one artist I got to know in the fandom early on when I joined in 2013, she also sings and has appeared in different Brony Singer collabs, like I know she was friends with Turquoise Splash. Anyway, her brony name is Sugary Violet and she actually did her own rendition of Flying Dreams (the song that you hear in the sequence when Mrs. Brisby cares for Timothy and the ending credits song). To this day, that rendition still makes me cry! I can't remember which sight she uploaded it on since I haven't heard it in recent years. I want to say Song Cloud? For me Mrs. Brisby is one of the best written chars in fiction. I'll be honest, as a kid I did ship her and Justin lol. I remember seeing this movie as a kid when I was 5 or 6, definitely before Land Before Time came out though. I saw that because the movie never really traumatized me like that movie did. Scared me for sure. But yeah, the lengths that Mrs. Brisby goes to save her son and even the rest of her kids, I love it.
4:35 I've heard that in the book this movie is based off of, Justin and Mrs. Brisby (though in the boo version, it's Mrs. Frisby) did hook up - so it does explain the flirting scene, lol. Have heard they, unfortunately, had to scap some Justin/Mrs. Brisby scenes though. I also agree that the NIMH experimenting on animals scene is heartbreaking. Between this, Plague Dogs, Flanagan's Fall of the House of Usher, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and one of the scenes from Legally Blonde 2 - animal experimentation scenes punch me in the heart.
Secret of Nihm was my favorite Don Bluth film. It was beautiful and deliciously dark, I I love the music score and Mrs.Brisby had to be one of the strongest female characters in animation history.
I'm actually not sure if there are a couple or not. I saw a Reddit post of a guy shipping them together and everybody was saying that they're not a couple and that saber had a girlfriend. although given their recent thumbnail choice that may have changed.
@@ianb3515Shipping real people unless they’re explicitly together has always been weird to me. Especially when you’re vocal about it and don’t just keep it to yourself.
Ahh, one of my childhood favorites! Bluth films always had such a unique vibe. Any chance an uncut recording of this will ever go up on Patreon? I went looking, but it doesn't seem to be on there! 😕
The stone really doesn't make sense to me because the characters are supposed to be result of lab experiments, and everything seems grounded in some form of science-fiction, but then there's a magic stone that isn't really explained Like wut
I've heard some people speculate that the rats may not just be hyper-intelligent - they may also surpass human intelligence (which is why some of their technology is mystical and otherworldly). Not sure if that makes sense either, but it's a light-fantasy movie, so that may also explain why they don't go into detail. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It's impossible to stick to the book and have a successful movie. "We have to move the house!" "Okay, it's done." "Thanks. Oh, BTW NIMH is coming." "Guess we better scoot then, thank you." THE END.
The stone is only in the movie, it’s not in the book at all if I recall but it has been forever since I read it. If I remember correctly they added it after some screen test to give it a more mystical magical feeling to match some of the movies that were selling at the time
My buddy Justin just saw this movie recently, and was so upset he hadn't seen it sooner because he would've been all about a movie with a cool male lead that had the same name as him. Also, it was brought up while watching it, but isn't it so weird that it feels like it's wrong to see Mrs. Brisby naked, without her little shawl?
Hey Sabre, when are you ever going to discuss that streaming service that now allows people to generate whole entire episodes of "South Park" using only prompts? I heard it through the channel Clownfish TV. Is this it? Is this the end of filmmaking and animation as we know it?
I met Don Bluth at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
@@Firguy_the_Foot_Fetishist I feel same way too he confused little bit what I was talk about. I was nervous what to say to him so I don't confused him and was respectful to me.
It’s amazing how 80s Don Bluth managed to beat Disney at their own game at the time.
Secret of NIMH proved that you didn’t need Disney magic (or money) to make a classic movie.
I mean Don Bluth used to work for Disney but I get it.
A couple of years ago one of the local theater chains did a Don Bluth weekend, a friend and I went to watch All Dogs Go To Heaven with Bluth and Gary Goldman, get stuff signed, and be there for a Q&A. The sword fight used live action references from the 1958 film The Vikings and the 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood.
