I had the privilege of attending a sold-out screening of this in Provincetown, MA. Directed by Ivy Meeropol, whose reputation as a filmmaker and storyteller has only continued to skyrocket since her 2004 award-winning film Heir To An Execution (a gut-wrenching and intimate account of the lives and deaths of her grandparents, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, both executed as spies in 1953) grabbed the world's attention and garnered praise for Ivy's capacity to explore something as personal and controversial as the execution of her own grandparents with the objectivity and curiosity one expects from serious journalism. It was fascinating to experience her latest film Bully. Coward. Victim. because not only has Meeropol once again helped us to examine a complex chapter in history, but she has reminded us that behind every character and at the core of every story, there is always a beating heart.
@@guarddog2253 That's a common misconception. Julius was a low-level spy, but he didn't provide any atom-bomb-related information; in addition, there was an enormous population of young, idealistic people who embraced communism in the 30s bc they saw it as a way of preventing fascism -- people didn't yet know about how awful Stalin was / how awful life was under him. Also, it's not surprising that communism (a closer-to-fair system, in theory) appealed to idealistic young people, and esp. to idealistic young people who were living through, and having their progress interrupted by (in some cases destroyed outright by), the Great Depression. And, Ethel was framed. For more information, pls read Hadley Freeman's piece in _The Guardian_ , c. 6-19-21.
Peyton, in the future pls break up a long post into paragraphs -- you have valuable insights, but many people will simply turn away from a big block of prose (I did). In addition, pls keep your prose simple -- your insights have been obscured by prose that is, frankly, way too purple and also inaccurate (ex.: if one is at the peak, one cannot continue to climb it -- the peak is the summit, the top; and, a prima ballerina [no caps] dances -- she doesn't extract a heart from a chest). Your prose is also loaded with unnecessary modifiers and images (ex.: _I had the privilege_ suffices -- nothing is gained by adding the modifiers _very special_ ). Wrong. Ethel Rosenberg is most certainly not guilty, but people who know very little about the case, bunch the couple together.
