I don't know if this is the first movie to feature a post-credit scene, but it is the earliest one I can think of. The brilliance of it lies in the context. Ready? Here we go... "I'll give him another twenty minutes", Airplane! (1980) -- At the beginning of this classic comedy, a man hails a taxi at Los Angeles International Airport. As he settles in, the driver, Ted Stryker, starts the meter, and says, "I'll be right back." But instead of returning to the cab to drive his fare, Ted Stryker buys a one-way ticket to Chicago. Throughout the rest of the movie, we occasionally cut back to the man in the taxi, waiting patiently for the driver to return. Once the credits finish with a definitive "So there," we cut back to the taxi one last time. Inside, the man checks his watch, and says, "Well, I'll give him another twenty minutes, but that's it." The brilliance of this sequence lies in the fact the man is California lobbyist and politician Howard Jarvis, who famously campaigned for the passage of Proposition 13, which placed a limit on property tax increases in the state. Yet, here he is, sitting in a taxi with the meter running for hours on end, potentially wasting a huge amount of money, something the very frugal Jarvis would never do. It's short, sweet, and to the point, and it provides the perfect ending to one of the greatest comedies ever made.
Thanks for the fun fact! I also recently just learned Christopher Lee turned down the role that eventually went to Leslie Nielsen. It's kind of crazy I keep unexpectedly finding out fascinating tidbits about Airplane!
I think one of the best post credits scenes was at the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming when Captain America breaks the fourth wall commending the cinema audience for sitting through the credits for nothing. Extremely funny and absolutely brilliant.
L.A. Confidential had everyone on top of their game. Kevin Spacey was amazing even by his own standards. Top notch stuff and my favourite film of the 90's, but even I didn't know about that cheeky post-credits scene.
When you talk about post credit, or mid-credit scenes, especially bloopers, many folks will mention Jackie Chan movies. But don't forget where Jackie says he got the idea: Post credit bloopers were a feature of Hal Needham movies, and a young Jackie Chan was is "Cannonball Run 2". As always thank you so very much for the videos.
Idiocracy had a good post-credit scene with Upgrayedd being revealed to have been frozen in suspended animation too and wakes up to find Rita. The joke is that Rita still thinks Upgrayedd can find her despite Joe/Not Sure telling her he's been dead for centuries.
Wild Things has a post credits scene that changes the entire movie. Not the best film, but easily the most substantive post-credits scene in film history
The first movie I saw that did this was at the end of "Masters of the Universe" when Skeletor said "I'll be back!" it's been 36 years.. Still waiting 😜
I worked in a movie theater when Jingle All The Way came out. Sometimes I was on post-movie cleaning duty, so I’ve seen the post-credits scene way more times than I’ve seen the actual movie.
The movie that got me to watch for post credit scenes was The Return of Jafar. I owned that movie and never knew it existed. It’s simply Abis Maal hanging from a tree outside the palace and says “Does this mean I didn’t get my third wish?” after Jafar was destroyed.
Airplane: After the credits roll (also full of Easter eggs) it cuts back to the man who was abandoned earlier in the movie by the driver who says 'Well I'll give him another twenty minutes, but that's it!' tying up a loose end the audience may have never thought needed tying up
Morale way to deal with Hitler… use time travel to visit art masters throughout time and become a master yourself. Then visit a young Hitler and tutor him as he as he aspires to be an artist, and assure he is not rejected but instead is accepted into art school. Let him live as a successful artist instead of becoming a disgruntled politician.
Airplane! The guy who gets into in Striker's cab when we first meet the character in front of the airport. Striker tells him ''I'll be back in a minute'' and quickly flips the meter to start before running off to chase Elaine, eventually getting on the plane and we go through the whole movie AND credits (🤣) before we cut back to the guy still waiting for him to get back. He then says 'I'll give him another 20 minutes, but that's it!''
Marvel movies is one of the reasons I don't go into cinema anymore and just wait for the movie on streaming. I got tired of the cleaning staff shooing me out during the credits when I PAID FOR MY TICKET AND I WANT TO SEE THAT POST CREDITS SCENE YOU MORONS!!!
Austin Powers, Young Sherlock Holmes and DeadPool and many others I knew of as I've been fast forwarding through ending credit scenes long before the Marvel movies were even a thing. I just used to do it on the odd chance that there would be something extra at the end of the movies. And the Andy scene at the end off Curse of Chucky I knew because that's the version I have.
1987 "Adventures in Babysitting" end credits has Graydon played by Ro9n Canada still lying on the slanted glass outside of a skyscraper asking for Help.
I think the joke in Deadpool 2 was the fact that he HELD the baby Hitler. Thereby "changing his future"....not really but that was the idea. Not even this psycho can kill a baby but he will fuck things up.
Monty Python and the holy Grail. I remember many people walking out , then rushing to take a seat to see what was happening, then being afraid to leave while the rest of the credits roll. 1975. That's when I started appreciating the music over end credits. I'm there anyway, why not enjoy the music and let the parking lot clear out??? 😁
At the end of 1991's "Hot Shots", after the credits near their end, this appears: IF YOU HAD LEFT THIS THEATRE WHEN THESE CREDITS BEGAN , YOU'D BE HOME NOW. lol
I once rode in an elevator with Alex Vincent. He's a super nice guy, if not a little quiet. Then again, my friend was giving him the stink eye the whole time..🤔
ugh on the other hand, it returns almost all of marvel's properties to their own hands (except spiderman, which is owned by Sony) Disney sucks, but Marvel itself i'm glad they finally have everything back together and can now do x-men stuff.
Yeah because their track record before Disney was so good. Fox's X-Men was a shit show, Non Disney Marvel had 1 really good movie, Iron Man, and then a bunch of mediocre movies. Now that we have all Marvel, minus Spider-Man, under 1 banner and can actually do justice to the characters
I really wish people would stop giving credit to the MCU for post credit scenes. They didn't make it popular, it was already something that had been done for years in Hollywood. It was only because they laid out their plans for multiple movies in advance that people knew to stay.
No one would expect a post credit scene from this movie (Seconds later, about _the same film)_ True to its tone, here's a post-credit scene I keep giving WhatCulture chance after chance and they keep making me regret that decision
weird about the Saw one because I could have sworn I saw it in the theaters too 0_o. I also saw the Chucky scene on a streaming on Netflix version a few years ago
Where the hell does all this "MCU inventing the post-credit stinger" BS come from? There have been AMAZINGLY good to great post credit scenes at least since Ferris Bueller, sherlock holmes, and MANY others....so no, Marvel does not deserve "credit" (pun intended) for "popularizing" them. Ugh.
Am I the only one that often decides to watch a movie I haven't seen, based on some of these videos? With that in mind. Please stop giving out major plot points or deaths of important characters in your videos. I don't care if it's a thirty year old movie, half the time there in no need to spoil a film. "Ooh, that looks good, I'll watch that tonight!" Five minutes later... "Never mind"
How does WhatCulture not have a post-credit scene in a video about post-credit scenes? Missed opportunity!
Fart contest at the end of "A Knight's Tale" will always be my favorite.

"With 2 Ds for a double dose of his pimping." 🤣 🍻🤘
Crank is great, but Hardcore Henry is the best video-game-movie (without a video game) movie ever made.

Andy returning was ABSOLUTE genius
Wild Things has a post credits scene that changes the entire movie. Not the best film, but easily the most substantive post-credits scene in film history
Not an A film but a pretty fun B film with honestly enjoyable noir twistiness and yeah that post credit scene was cherry.
Mediastinger is your best friend for looking up whether movies have mid/post-credits scenes and whether they are worth waiting for.
The post credit scene of Deadpool suggesting Wolverine to come back when he's asked to aged like a fine wine after the announcement of Deadpool 3
The movie that got me to watch for post credit scenes was The Return of Jafar. I owned that movie and never knew it existed. It’s simply Abis Maal hanging from a tree outside the palace and says “Does this mean I didn’t get my third wish?” after Jafar was destroyed.
Airplane (1980)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Legend has it the man in the taxi is still giving it another 20 minutes.....and then that's it!
The post-credit scene in Airplane! is a perfect payoff to a joke. Also, the post-credit scene in 22 Jump Street is a pretty damn funny.
I'll give him another 20 minutes. But that's it.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off should have been #1.
At the very least an honorable mention for being one of the first movies to ever do it.
Ohhhh yeahhhhh
watching the credit is respect to the makers all involved, the extra scene is just a nice bonus

so much work though...easier to switch him with another baby or something. Shove him in a bassinet in Switzerland.
I dont know if I'd count young sherlock holmes. The movie is still going during the credits.
Airplane! The guy who gets into in Striker's cab when we first meet the character in front of the airport. Thank you for talking about Anthony Higgins -- a really good actor 😊
Airplane should be No.1, it was before any of these, had end credits chock full of Easter eggs and a post credit scene that was a great pay off.
A correction, Deadpool came out in 2016, 8 years after the first Iron Man movie.... Unless you mean the Dirty Harry movie called Dead Pool?
All the XX Jump Street sequels at the end of 22 Jump Street.
These are some pretty solid choices. Good list.
Preserve them for POSTERITY, not prosperity!
Why don't people use timestamps anymore? Pure laziness imo
The deadpool baby hittler scene made it into a few theaters.... he used a pillow.
1987 "Adventures in Babysitting" end credits has Graydon played by Ro9n Canada still lying on the slanted glass outside of a skyscraper asking for Help.
“Deadpool killing Baby Hitler”works right off the tongue😂

Bill Murray killing zombies in Zombieland 2
I thought the Andy post credits scene was on the Netflix version. I remember seeing it when I watched it
It definitely was, because I saw it when I watched the movie and it was not thru blu ray.

Walk Hard is hilarious and extremely underrated
The irony of Dewey Cox is that after the movie, there were still inaccurate biopics made and they still sweep awards shows

Nothing like a video about filums.
I wish Deadpool could go back in time to stop Disney from buying Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century Fox

What? No Ferris Bueller? That was so Iconic Deadpool copied it, and you left it off the top 10? That’s a faux pas.
I always watch the end credits. The problem is the theater employees come in and clean because they assume that everyone has left
I really wish people would stop giving credit to the MCU for post credit scenes. They didn't make it popular, it was already something that had been done for years in Hollywood. It was only because they laid out their plans for multiple movies in advance that people knew to stay.
