  • Scroll Saw Blades, beginners guide. (Standard tooth vs Reverse tooth vs Spiral blades for wood work) looks at some of the differences between three of the most common types of scroll saw blades. This is our scroll saw blades explained for beginners guide.
    We perform a series of tests using our scroll saw to highlight the advantages, disadvantages and differences between using these three scroll saw blades. Please be aware that this video is solely for scroll saw blades for wood work.
    If you are new to the scroll saw, the amount of different blades, brands, sizes etc can be somewhat overwhelming. In this video we share out thoughts on the blades we find work best for us and the differences between using standard scroll saw blades, reverse tooth scroll saw blades and spiral scroll saw blades.
    We also give an insight into the numbers system used for scroll saw blade sizes and share our thoughts on the best scroll saw blade and size for the work we do every day. Our work requires fine detail, so our chosen blades are fantastic scroll saw blades for intricate cuts.
    Please be aware that the thoughts and opinions expressed in this video are entirely subjective and based upon our own personal experiences. We advise doing similar tests to ourselves to develop your own opinions on what scroll saw blades are best for the work you do.

    I use Niqua also on my Hegner Multicut 1, because I work with hard woods (oak, cherry, nut) no thicker than 4 to 6 mm I use numbers 3 and 5 where 5 is used for stacks/double wood. I experience drift with Niqua especially the number 5. I use a block with sanding cloth to sand down the back of the saw blade. I also used Pegas advanced geometry, this brought not enough ‘plusses’ in use to justify the high price.

      Hi Nico, great to hear from you and thanks for your input. It's always great to hear about other people's experiences with their own scroll sawing.
      Blades is such a fascinating part of scroll sawing. Tried lots of the different Pegas blades and always come back to the Niqua ones. I did enjoy working with the Flying Dutchman blades but found them very similar to the Niqua blades and they are easier for me to get hold of.
      We use the number 9 blades and they do the job we want. Never had any issues with the drifting or perhaps I am just used to correcting it as I cut. 😂😂

    I've been using Flying Dutchman Ultra reverse blades on my Hegner when cutting gears for my wooden clocks. These blades have reverse teeth along the whole edge of the blade. Two teath down, one tooth up. I mostly use the No. 3 and No. 5 blades. These blades are great for cutting 1/4 to 3/4 inch Baltic Birch because they leave a supersmooth finish.

    I’ve tried the spiral blades and found it hard to get straight lines when cutting harder woods. Am I doing something wrong?

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  2 года назад +1

      Hi Ron, great to hear from you. In my honest opinion the answer would be no, you are probably not doing anything wrong. I personally find spiral blades are far more difficult to get a quality cut and finish on than other blades. They are a great idea in theory but whenever I have used them I am not happy with the quality of the cut they leave.
      Some seem to master using them and get some great results but for me I prefer a reverse tooth blade. Gives a far better quality finish and is much better to work with.
      My own blade preference is the Niqua speed reverse tooth number 9 blade or the Flying Dutchman reverse tooth number 9 blade. The Pegas number 9 reverse tooth blade is another good option but I have to sand across the blade to prevent it from slipping in the blade holder.

    I don’t have any good opinions or thoughts to provide yet. I’m doing homework to cut down on the hard ache when I start using my scroll saw when it arrives. I will say the cleaner the cut should be better to cut down on the overall work which in turn would speed up production

      Blades are probably the area of scroll sawing that generates the most debate. Always liked the idea of the spiral blades but the ones that I have tried have never matched my hopes. The principle seems great but never really worked for myself. Tried all sort of blades but always come back to my favourite Niqua number 9 reverse tooth blades. Perhaps it is because that is what I am used to working with. 👍👍

      Hi Al,
      Great to hear from you and delighted to hear that the videos are useful. None of the scroll saw blade manufacturers offer pin ended spiral blades to my knowledge. They only seem to do spiral blades in the pinless style.
      Having tried spiral blades several times, I have to admit I have never found them that great. In theory they are a brilliant idea, however, I find working with them in hard wood inferior to the standard and reverse tooth blades.
      My own preference is the Niqua Speed number 9 reverse tooth blade or the Flying Dutchman number 9 reverse tooth blade. Ease to work with and quality of cut in hardwood is fantastic.
      Hope you enjoy scroll sawing, it's great fun and there ate so many things you can make.

    Hi again. Thank you for your very helpful videos. Yesterday I ordered Pegas pack 12 and they were delivered this morning from Axminster. When looked at the info on the package I found they’re No 1 modified geometry. It might be my fault when I ordered, I’m going to reorder No 9 tomorrow from Axminster.
    What sort of work is No 1’s blade used for
    I have ordered Niqua No 9 from Germany.
    Your videos are brilliant. Do you sell your plans

      Thanks Norman,
      Make sure you order the Niqua speed number 9 reverse tooth blades, if you want the same ones as we use. I have tried the Niqua Pebecco blades too and they worked really well.
      When it comes to the blades number the lower numbers are for cutting thinner wood or other materials. They generally have a higher T. P. I. (teeth per inch) so the feed speed is slower but the finish can be finer.
      Many of the projects that we demonstrate are available for free on our website. The link is in the description of many of the videos but I have attached it below for you.

    Hi nice video. I am new to scroll sawing. Got a question for the community re: the blades. I am using the pin head blades. I have the blade installed correctly according to the manual. I have the tension set as well. However; when I start my cuts at an angle to the wood the blade wants to twist on me (sliding over the wood not cutting). But if I go straight into the wood it cuts fine. Any idea why the blade is twisting on me when I attempt to cut into the wood at an angle? BTW I am using a Skill 3335 Scroll Saw. Thank you.

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  2 года назад +2

      Hi Brian, great to hear from you, that sounds like a frustrating issue. A few possible issues could be the blade itself, technique and the installation of the blade/machine.
      Have you got the correct blade for the job you are doing would be one thing to check. Is it suitable for the type and thickness of material you are working with. Technique, is another thought, are you forcing the machine as opposed to guiding the blade. Have you tried installing the blade differently and adjusting the tension differently to see what happens. Might not make any difference but trial and error is always worth a go. Is the scroll saw installed correctly, bolted to a base and bolted to the floor.
      Those are just a few possibilities worth looking at. Never worked with pinless blades myself so not sure about any issues with blade drift/twisting etc. When I started scroll sawing I used to use a more entry level machine and blade drift/twisting was a major issue.

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  Год назад +1

      Hi Ronnie, great to hear from you. Jumping wood can certainly be annoying. You do have hold down attachments that can clamp it for you but most find it gets in the way. I stack cut small projects onto larger pieces of wood to make it easier to control when cutting out. Reducing the feed speed can help too. I went from using a band saw that has a faster feed speed to a scroll saw, so it took a while to get used to a slower feed speed. I sand the back of the wood to get it flat on the scroll saw bed, that helps to reduce jumping too.
      Hope you find a method that works well for you. Thanks for getting in touch and supporting our RUclips channel. All the very best from us all. 👍👍

      I have also bought Flying Dutchman reverse tooth blades through the wooden Teddy bear company.
      woodenteddybear.com/collections/flying-dutchman-scroll-saw-blades
      And Pegas blades through axminster tools. However, I find these have a tendency to slip in the blade holder.

I am more than happy with the results produced by the Sony ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone that we currently use. How to sharp all of these blades if they worn out ?

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  3 года назад +1

      Hi Haris, great to hear from you. I wouldn't really advise spending time trying to sharpen the blades myself. I would replace the blade with another one. We buy them in packs of 120 and use a new one each time one has worn out.
      If you really want to have a go at sharpening a blade you could try a dremmel. We sharpen our band saw blades in this way but to do it on a scroll saw blade would be time consuming and unlikely to get alot more out of a blade before it breaks.
      For me it would be alot of time and effort for limited gain. Better to use a fresh blade. Others might have different thoughts though?

    hi my question what are the factor that you have to know when to change these blade to a new one??

    • @DailovespoonsThomas
      @DailovespoonsThomas  3 года назад +1

      Hi Rodrigo,
      Great to hear from you. This is a really great question and one that will be the focus of a future video. Of course sometimes a blade will break and this needs to be changed. There are indeed other occasions when we choose to change a blade. For example when a blade becomes discoloured (this will be the focus of our future video) it is necessary to change to blade. On the Niqua blade we have a section that becomes a blueish colour and when this happens we change the blade. The reason we change the blade is because it tends to burn the wood.
      Other times when we change the blade is if they get out of shape. Thankfully this is not a frequent issue. We also change blades if we feel it is not cutting well or if it is burning the wood. For example when working with Cherry we use a new blade to reduce the risk of the blade burning the wood.
      The basic rule we stick to is if you are not happy with how the blade is performing change it to another one.
      Hope that gives you a few ideas of how we manage our blades. Great to hear from you as always. Let me know if you have any follow up questions. All the best from us all here at The Lovespoon Workshop. 👍👍

      Hi Jerry great to hear from you. I always find blades fascinating, so many different types and even more different views about them. I will have to ask dad if he finds any difference between blades now and 40 years ago.
      The blades we use do the job we want but they don't last as long as we would like. Your thoughts are definitely inkeeping with our own when it comes to things like our carving gouges and other saws. We still use vintage Herring Bros and Addis gouges, made over 100 years ago. For us they are much better quality than more modern gouges. Our band saw was made in the early 1980s and still doing a great job. We recently managed to get a coronet saw. Dad had one years ago and replaced it with a modern circular saw and regretted it. When we saw one come up we bought it. Really nice to work with, such accurate cuts.
