Anyone who saw Gonchi in his F3000 days or wrestle that dog of a Penske to a point first time out in Detroit that year knew an amazing talent was lost on that dark day at Laguna.
If you notice very closely at 0:32-0:33, you'll see someone fall out of the tree the instant Gonchi made impact with it. He was extremely lucky he wasn't seriously hurt or worse, shared Gonchi's fate. RIP. ;-(
Amazing! This was my first CART race I properly watched, shame it occured on such an awful weekend. Still, it's great to watch this, it's September 1999 all over again.
I remember the way Herta and the Rahal team celebrated after they won. Look, I know life goes on and I know the CART World didn't know Gonzalo that well, plus Bryan did mention him. But still, celebrating like they'd won the title was wrong in the circumstances. Very, VERY wrong. But then, it was clear that by Sunday, no-one in CART gave a fuck about the violent death of a 27 year-old with a huge future now sadly behind him. It was the same sickening story by lap 150 six weeks later as well...
I just walked over the Champion Spark plug bridge and up into the Corkscrew on Friday Morning when Gonzalo crashed. It happened so fast. People were saying that he never braked. It was soo fucked. Then all the drivers came up to the top to have a talk with Wally about how to fix the corner. Some how his radio was keyed on and the whole place could hear Mike Andretti and some other guys arguing with him. No... it was not a happy weekend... If you loved the sport it hurt.
Thank you for share this video. I dont like the way that the race winner celebrates, I think that driver was wrong, but poor man, he had so little chances to celebrate a race victory in his career...
R.I.P. to all the heroes we lost over the years... u all will never been forgotten! greetz from germany...

@claryscat in fact, the sinister (it wasn't an accident) was on saturday morning. It becomes the uruguayans 11-S because Gonzalo was our hero.
