    Oldsmobile had a 215 v8 turbo almost 20 years earlier in the F85.

  • @googleusergp
    @googleusergp 5 лет назад +7

    The '80 Turbo "LU8" was rated at 210hp, not 200. The 1981 Turbo 301 was rated at 200hp due to the C-3 Computer Command Control System, among other things, slightly reducing the HP. The original floor mats were the rubber color keyed ones that say "GM" on them in the front and just have the ribbed pattern in the back. Those appear to be aftermarket that you have, at least in the front. Back in the day, there were many companies selling accessories like that, so I'm sure they were readily available from many sources, even back then.

    This engine was supposed to continue in the next-gen Firebirds (1982+). That's why the early 3rdgen Firebirds have the same hood bulge. It probably would have improved a lot in a few years with computer controlled fuel injection. But then GM canceled the 301, which was Pontiac's last V8, so Pontiac had to copy the Camaro engine options.
    Funny thing about the 301 is that it's actually 302ci, with exactly the same bore and stroke as the Ford 302, but Pontiac didn't want people to think it was a Ford engine so they called it the 301.

    • @joequillun7790
      @joequillun7790 2 года назад

      After 74, the only reason the shaker hood shook, was from the emissions laden smog motor detonating itself to death underneath. Low compression, single cat, EGR, leaned out carb, and retarded ignition.

    Also, the Turbo Trans Ams were pretty fast compared to other production cars in 1980 and 81. 210 hp was more than what the Vette and Camaro or others in 1980 were producing. Yes, they weren't pushing the horsepower that the earlier Trans Ams and Formulas were, but Pontiac kinda had it's hands tied. Heck, nothing really was super fast in 80 and 81. It was a sad period for production horsepower.

    There's a bunch of misinformation in this video. Firstly, as several have mentioned Oldsmobile did it first back in the early 60's with the Jetfire which was a turbocharged production V8. Secondly, they didn't "do away with" the Shaker hoods in 1980 and 81. They just used a different hood with the offset scoop on the Turbo cars. He kinda didnt clarify that very well. The rest of the regular Trans Ams still got the Shaker hood. Lastly, they're actually rated @ "210" hp and 345 ft Ibs of torque. They produce up to 9 pounds of boost.

    Pontiac did what they could at the time the Muscle car was being destroyed. If you had a 2000 Trans Am a car with pretty good "GO" from it's LS engine but living with it's appearance and any attempt to change that seems like much bigger challenge vs this great looking 1980 Trans Am with a drive train that needs to find it's way into the nearest dumpster.
