To all of you wondering why you are not getting as many mobs it is because he built his high in the air.you could also light up all the caves nearby :)

Mcgerry Pangatungan . I'm in the same boat. I dknt think it works anymore. I've built half a dozen. None work. One the sky in hard with render distance on 14. Blah blah blah. Doesn't work. If your figure it out let me know
The reason you want to build mob traps in the air, is because they are more efficient. There is a maximum number of mobs that can spawn in your area. If you build a mob trap like this on the ground, a lot of the mobs will spawn in the surrounding area, either on the ground outside, or in the caves underground. Which in turn, will reduce the effectiveness of the trap, because there will be less mobs spawning inside of it. Try lighting up the surrounding area, and any caves underground. It'll help

Yes, mine will have more idle mobs if it is expanded. But I won't expand it. Bigger doesn't mean better. And I don't like to have a huge tower above the base just for mob grinding.
You won't have more mobs if you expand Etho's grinder. And they will sometimes die inside the grinder without getting out of it.
That depends on how you play. If you enjoy automation, those resources are great: bone-meal is very useful for making automated farms more effective, and gunpowder is required by many of the popular machine mods to create useful items. These mods often provide items that are much more powerful than enchanted tools in Vanilla MC.
If you don't use these mods, then yes, bone-meal and gunpowder aren't much use.

Yes, but you need to light up everything in about 120 block radius in sphere around the grinder if you placed it lower. If you placed it higher, it will just reduce the rates for 1-2%.

The tube height doesn't matter as long as you stay within 24 block range from grinder. Otherwise you will have mobs on 3rd floor lowering the rates.
Actually the best height of tube would be 22-21 block because there are still few blocks of blind area at the third floor, but mobs won't die from that height.
A lot of people may have questions but are afraid to create it and waste time but on 1.7.9 PC version it works as long as you follow the steps
This mob trap is Amazing!! It worked even better when I built it. I got like 15 mobs falling per 30 seconds
Guys, it might be because you build it near caves, you might have to build it sky high in order for the farm to work

You can fit more like 14 layers in an above ground system. You tested it with 5 as per the tutorial but its easily expandable without many more idle mobs. Yours will have far more idle mobs if it is expanded.
Maybe you got dark places like caves around. If there are caves around the spawner which are not lit up, mobs spawn there and stay there. There is an maximum of mobs for an area, and if those mobs got a dark place to spawn and stay alive, they will interfere with your grinder.
1712 Blocks, 108 Slabs, 64 Trapdoors, Water and at least 16 torches
(Blocks for corners not counted)
If you built it lower than that, you will have to light up the caves within 128 blocks (all directions) of where you will be afking to prevent mobs spawning in the caves instead of the spawner. You would probably still have to do a little lighting if you built it at 160 on a regular world.
The 128 height is not the border. They say that lc value that represent highest sub-chunk with non-air block lower the rates because game will have more blocks loaded. I haven't seen the source code so I can't tell in numbers how it changes the spawning probability, but as you see I have extremely good rates at y:160. If it matters then insignificantly, so it's easier to put this baby up high without worrying about the caves.
It doesn't matter if people are away or near you. The mob cap must be reached because other players have hostile mobs around. Try it in the morning when no one will be online. If it will still work slow then send me a screen shot via pm.
Isn't this just a classic 8x8 pad designs with slabs and trapdoors? Doesn't seem like it would be very efficient considering you can't stack it more than a few layers high without having tons of idle mobs. I'd like to see a comparison between one of these and a fully stacked Etho design.
That is because mob cap is shared between all players in SMP (Read "Notes" section of "Spawn" article at wiki). You can't do anything with it. It's a common problem of grinders that are using natural spawning. Mobs just don't spawn in the grinder - neither pistons nor water can help you to push mobs that aren't exist.

Does this Mob Spawner still work to this day? I really wanna make it but wanna make sure it still works.
Also, I realized that the mobs just fall to their death, if they fall to their death doesn't that mean you get no experience from it?

Use packed ice for the canal system, helps to get mobs out faster ;)

I believe this is a bug. It's very hard to prove though. There is already a bug that affects mob spawning (MC-2536 and others with different description that are closed as duplicates).
About my farm: It is built above an ocean, way above the surface so there are no other spawn-valid blocks. Yet without any change to the farm the spawn rate is either very low or zero which makes no sense since there are a lot of blocks valid for spawning in the farm.
i came up with a similar idea for a mob farm in beta 1.4 without the trapdoors but with signs and i thought i was unique, but then i checked youtube and saw the exactly same desing as mine

Yes, you can just raise the floor 1 block up for this. Only few mobs may die.
Yes, it will. But if you make the tube wider, or make it out of glass panes, they shouldn't be able to stick to the wall.
What is LC? Maybe you placed lighting near the walls of the grinder. There are some bugs with lighting at high altitude. Download the world file and make sure that you have the same conditions.
Does this design work in 1.14.4, I mean there are a lot of comments that are from a year ago....
I don't get why you mention server population while talking about idle mobs. This structure is meant to be compact and cheap and gives good rates without any pistons. It is designed for AFK item/mob collecting, while player stands below it. If you want to make it work at distances farther than 32 meters from player, you should wait for the next video about it. I will lower the spawning rates, but add a capability to deal with idle mobs.
i made this exact grinder too on my multiplayer server above the ocean. and its like 3 skellies per 30 min. is because of 1.4.5 update ?

Most mobs do not spawn on slabs and to increase efficiency you need to reduce the places where mobs can spawn that's also why he's done it high up

Slabs prevent spiders from spawning, and the reason why each floor is only two blocks high is to prevent endermen from spawning.
Describe conditions. Did you place it like I did at y:160 above the ocean? Check the inside, sometimes MCEdit doesn't update lighting properly.
How come the video reply to Etho has slabs that are 1 block apart while this version has slabs that are 2 blocks apart?
You will never close them, so it doesn't matter on what part of the block you attached them. It works in 1.5, but I have an improved version for it, check out the channel.
Tried it in 14w32b and it seems that it is not working and I have built it in the same way just with 2 layers instead because I was resource short

Why would you need to stack even more layers? It already gives two times more mobs than Ethos' grinder.

Why my mobspawner who is 40 blocks up in the air wont work as this one? I agree it is on a smp server and i have no slabs but the mobgrinder wich is 10 block away from there works perfectly and mine only spawns a few :(

To disable spider spawning. It's a pretty common technique, so I didn't explain this.

if you take less, mobs won't die from falling. If more then skeleton reaction speed might reduce.
I can't tell definitely without a screen shot, but maybe the second grinder is just bigger and it works faster, denying mob spawning in the first grinder.
It gives best rates with 3 floors. I explained this in comparison video.
do mob grinders work generally better in the air above 128 or below ground at 0?
can i add more levels to improve the spawn rate? like 1mob/sec? cuz mine only gives 1mob/10-20 sec :/ and thats not much of a farming
Did u light the caves so it does not interfere with the spawn rate or if your on super flat land get away from the nearest villages or just make your difficulty hard

I understand he slabs are meant to stop spiders from spawning but don't spiders need a 2x2 area to spawn? And there are 2x2 areas still in there
+Aminto Spiders spawn in the Overworld in 3×3×2 space on solid blocks (centered on the middle block) at a light level of 7 or less, in groups of 4. The top blocks can be transparent, but not solid. Source: MinecraftWiki

Is it in SMP? What is the height? Are you sure it's completely dark inside?
Does it work only if you are under the grinder?
Do the slabs help with spawning? Can I use any block like cobblestone slab? I have a stack of two of these traps plus another I built on the other side of my base and it doesn't get as much. Can I add more levels for more loot?
Also At the time of writing this comment I changed my trap so it's like yours.

Yes, you can use any slab you like.
Yes, you can add more layers for more loot. But note that to many layers won't work as good anymore because then the mob cap get's filled to quickly.

I have two levels the lower one has the water. I might keep mine the way I have it and when I get enough string I'll add the slabs. Any way to stop the spiders from climbing the walls? I've heard that if you put signs on the inside walls at the exit it's supposed to help.
Signs might help yes, not really sure on that one though.

If you've mad this and it doesn't spawn alot of mobs on SMP, try doing it while you're the only one on the server! i got up to 50 spawns!
I built this in my Minecraft 1.7.9 singleplayer world. Later, I seen that 14w20a fixes mobs not spawning correctly, so I moved from 1.7.9 to 14w25b the latest snapshot. Still no spawns. I've done everything exactly the same as his! Please help

OMG .. Im Such a Derp . I just made this whole thing , took about 2 hours ... And I just realized I didn't start from y:160 .. will it still work?
Does the placement of the trapdoors matter? I placed them at the upper part of the block instead of the lower half. Also, does this mob tower still work for the 1.5 update?

I'm sure there is something terribly wrong with Minecraft mob spawning in general. I had Etho's simple mob trap and I was ok with it. But after building panda4994's mob spawn switch, with a lot of minecraft updates meanwhile (1.4.2 -> 1.5.1), even with spawn switch on (i.e. pumpkin mobs teleported to the nether) the spawn was affected terribly. Extremely decreased rate and after a while mobs stop spawning.

I built my mob grinder at y 160 out of snow blocks on an smp server for some reason they don't spawn at all, any idea why?

Nope, It works well even in 1.5 snapshot.
What is the height? Were there people on the server? Are you sure no light gets in it?
Does it have to be made of Sandstone?
You could also make the pillar only 20 blocks for an xp farm :)

You won't have all these Redstone Tree Farms working without Bonemeal, plus it is the basis for many colorings and can save time to gather colored wool. And it may take ages to dig something big without TNT. You won't need the Chicken farm, because it will also give you tons of arrows. You can live without food farms, because you have rotten flesh. Not to mention the fact that you can gather tools, iron ingots, heads, thread and spider eyes. You must be confusing Minecraft with some other game.

shouldnt you build under the new build height? it reduces spawn rates if you build abouve it bucause the game has to check more blocks..? btw i dont remember the old nor the new build height...

Why the half slabs on each floor?
Thought I was building an XP farm. Anyone know if this can be re-purposed into an XP farm?
You could just add 1 layer of blocks at the bottom so the mobs stay alive with minimal health.
