Adding to this, I have a theory why all the other Rose Quartzes are bubbled in the same room inside the Zoo. They weren't necessarily all collected from different places and put inside the Zoo--they were already all working at the Zoo to begin with. Based on our Rose's ability to heal and affinity for organic life, it's likely that all Rose Quartzes have healing powers and the ability to manipulate organic life. They probably served as field doctors during wars and as nurses/zookeepers in the Zoo. Since humans would be far more likely to trust a human-looking Gem with healing powers over strangely-colored Gems with offensive abilities and big weapons, the Rose Quartzes were put in charge of maintaining the Zoo. Our Rose became fascinated with humans during her time at the Zoo and wanted to see what they were like in their natural habitat, aka Earth, so she eventually stayed on Earth and that led to her forming the idea to rebel against Homeworld. Her job in outer space was to preserve human life, and once she found out Earth was going to be destroyed and used as a geo-weapon, her instincts to preserve humanity on Earth based on her role in Homeworld kicked in.
liberty McKenzie she was valued because of her strength and loyalty, and she fit well into yellow diamonds court after the war, but there's still a pressing bias against earth gems and quartzes in particular which haunted jasper. i see jasper as the exception, not the rule.
Don't forget that Jasper was THE perfect Quartz soldier from a trashy kindergarten. We still haven't seen another one like her yet so yes, she was very special.

Actually Holly Blue's comment was directed at the Jasper's when she says "even you hideous off-colored Betas" the Amethysts were earlier in her tirade because they were from the Prime Kindergarten. When Peridot was showing Steven and Amethyst the Beta Kindergarten the notes how the geology was chosen out of emergency, pointing out that the sandstone in the area made it less then ideal for the task. So off-color might refer to gems with multi-chromatic skin-tones like Jasper and her Beta Kindergarten sisters, rather than mono-chromatic gems like we see as far more common.

What I mean is that, depending on their class they may be shared between courts, take for example Peridot, she's a green technician class gem. Yellow and Blue make green so Peridots could be shared between YD's and BD's courts. I'm thinking that gems that are shades of the Diamonds (I.e. Red being a shade of Pink) then any colour mixed between two or more courts will share those gems. An exception might be in the case of a diamond being shattered, then those belonging to that court may be shared however seen fit (why Blue has most of the Jaspers and carnelian even tho they aren't shade of blue or a mix of it). The rubies tho, our Ruby didn't say which court she came from (and she has never had a diamond insignia) and YD's rubies are the only thing bothering me a little. They're red gems that means they would have likely been in Pink's court except that Leggy was "recently made"/is the youngest and assigned to yellow. This would imply that even if a diamond is shattered then gems that would be assigned to their court would still be made and assigned to another court, possibly based on class (Rubies are common foot soldiers, being warrior class they'd get sent to YD who seems to mostly manage the fighting gems)

I keep seeing people consider the term "off-color" to refer to the entire Famethyst at the Zoo. But I always thought Holly only referred to the Jaspers as the "hideous off-color Betas", because they're from the lesser Beta Kindergarten. If the mere color of a gem warranted such disdain from the upper class, then why was our Jasper viewed as so important? She was prioritized even more than Yellow Diamond's own Peridot and rubies.
i think people went to saying off colors was relating to holly blue way too fast because i think that they missed that she didnt say "you off color betas" she said "even you off color betas" and then she points to skinny and carnelian. The fact that she points to skinny and carnelian makes me think that she was talking just about the gems from the beta kindergarten because you know skinny and carnelian come from the beta kindergarten. I think that she said off color because shevwas talking about the beta kindergarten gems being defective or off color. The reason i think that is because you can tell that the jaspers are off color if you compare them to the "perfect" jasper you can tell that the "defective" jaspers have more dull colors to them. One of the biggest questions Ive had for the longest time is how does lapis fit into this whole equation? She's immensely powerful, and the statement she made during her first confrontation with the crystal gems "DO YOU EVEN REMEMBER WHO I USE TO BE?!" She was a high class gem, and must have been of some level of importance within Gem society.
Now that plenty episodes have been released, this is highly unlikely. 1. Gems like Emerald. Even though Emerald is not the same color as any diamonds, she still is pretty high ranking ( She's probaby high ranking because she has multiple big ships, and the diamonds wouldn't give that many ships to a low ranked gem.) 2. Rose = PD (Pink Diamond) Even though she wasn't a diamond, quartzes aren't highly ranked.
i was under the impression that off color would mean just that, off color, aka not the exact right color for the gem, a little too light, a little too dark, slightly off in hue, defects. and with how jasper describes defects, they are no doubt the lest valuable of there type of gem, if not least valuable of all the gems. the beta kindergarten was made in sandstone which is high in silica, light colored quarts powder, so they would almost all likely be lighter in color then there gem ideal.
I think that even if it's not gems that have been a sleeper cell for Rose they could just be gems that end up following Steven because of who he is and how he carries himself. I'm excited to see the new episodes and see how these cliffhangers resolve.. 0-0
I had my own theory that maybe some crystal gems were swept up in the evacuation to Homeworld. And then ended up having to pretend they were loyal to the authority and live on Homeworld. Presumably they'd side with Rose/Steven if the chance arose. This kind of works with your idea of spies.

Holly Blue only calls the jaspers off colours but I think this fits because the amethysts are purple with is a combination of blue and red, but jaspers are orange, which is the opposite of blue on the colour spectrum.
Matthew Masucci but you explained it, they're pearls, pearls are accessories to other gems so they tend to match the color of their owner. Even when matching a diamond they're still a low class form of gem seen as items

I figured off color means your are serving a Diamond that you weren't made for. In other words, all the gems that once served Pink Diamond, but who now serve the other Diamonds.
Sapphire ran off with Ruby because she wanted Ruby to be safe. Topaz is supposedly a high-ranked gem under Yellow Diamond, yet broke out into tears just by listening to Steven and Lars, and almost got them into an escape pod And Lapis? I think her unwillingness to cooperate with the Crystal Gems or Peridot was mainly because of the events she associates with them: being trapped, being a prisoner, being used like a tool... She liked Steven after seeing a bit of what he was like.
I just thought of something... What if Blue Pearl was Rose's spy? Right before "What's the use of feeling Blue", she didn't seem interested in making Blue Diamond feel better, like Yellow Diamond commanded, and only began to sing after Yellow Pearl pressured her. Such behavior could be hinting that Blue Pearl doesn't care for her job all that much, while Yellow Pearl is completely devoted to her Diamond. If Blue Pearl really was working for Rose at the time of the rebellion, she wouldn't have had a way to return to Earth after the corruption song was casted, so she found herself stuck to her job forever. But with Steven going to Homeworld, she now has another chance to be free.

Something that might be worth mentioning is the way the gems' colors relate to highlighters. Blue + yellow = green, pink + yellow = orange, pink + blue = purple. Some gems may be created by two diamonds and so their colors are different. Do what you want with the info. Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn't. There's really no support for a theory though
I wonder if now that the episode is out, you realize Off-color is a synonym to defective. Fusions, mutations, etc. Quartz soldier > Skinny Jasper, Sideways/short Carnelian, that is off-color. Rubies, Quartz, Peridots, all have a purpose to fill. And as they fill that, are likely not off-color.
Topaz was very quick to switch sides and if it weren't for Aquamarine threatening her I think she would have gone through with it. Why would a high ranking gem be so easily swayed? Either rank doesn't affect a gems general disposition or off-colour gems aren't the only low ranking gems. Perhaps Topazes in general are low ranking gems but these two particular Topazes have climbed the ranks somehow.

There is a flaw with your theory Lapis was treated as a prisoner in the episode jailbreak, Lapis was a blue gem; Pearl belonged to the RoseQuartz hence her pinkish off color.
i thought it was more along the lines of steven being sentenced to whatever punishment and meeting other defective gems waiting to be broken while imprisoned and later becomes allies with them

I don't think colors means high ranking. My reasoning for this is a theory I saw on tumblr concerning Jasper. Jasper was from Pink Diamond's court, as many of the Famethyst, BUT she was moved to Yellow Diamond's court. Why? Blue Diamond wanted to take Pink Diamond's legacy to remember her, while Yellow wanted to move on (in a way). In "Hit the Diamond", the Runy squad stated they're looking for Jasper, NOT Peridot. Peridot already had send in reports about Earth that Homeworld later used, but instead of her, they were looking for Jasper. The question is, why? Simple, Jasper was made "the perfect quarts soldier". Had it been one of the Famethyst, I assure you they wouldnt have bothered to look for them like they did with Peridot. Jasper, was different. She was bigger, stronger, fought on the first war for Earth, she's valuable to the Diamonds and that's why they placed her so high to the point of sending her to the planet they have been battling for years. She's not yellow or blue, either, heck, she's not even Pink, but instead of moving her to Blue's court, she was moved to Yellow's, a court that's hinted to be more set on military standards as seen with Yellow's design. That's why I don't think colors have to do with ranks that much, but that's just my theory.

this made me think of, back then when people was wondering about Bismuth... Bismuth is a very rainbowie gem, but it was not the question about, the question was "why bismuth was a Gem if it was mostly made of metal?" Then, we figured out Bismuth comes in the shape of a crystal and is composed for more than just bismuth, and also grows as any other quartz crystal. Also, many quartz have different colors due to the metal oxide around the ground they grow from. I Noticed that, Prime KG quartz are Amethyst, and they might have that color cause of the ground, and Beta KG quartz are Orangy or redish, just like the color of the desert ground it is located. If we think a little about Peridot, she mentions that she was made when Homeworld was running out of resources, at the 2nd era... This makes me think of her color as the result of combining the Resources in HW of Blue and yellow Diamond, but then Peridot says her Diamond is Yellow. Now, we dont know. May be Off color refers to gems who were not made in HW, or who no longer serve to their original owner, Pink Diamond.
I always thought Amethysts were considered not off color. As in, Holly is talking to the Jaspers/Carnelians when she says "you hideous off color betas", as she's saying they are different from the Famethysts. Off Colour seems to mean that the gem simply does not fall into the normality of their gem (Jaspers were made later, so Homeworld thought that Earth Quartzes should all be Amethysts, some gems are overcooked, some end up like the Twins of Rutile, all cross-gem fusions are considered off-colour, etc.)
Are you sure rose was in pink dimoands court. I'm pretty sure she was made to look after humans thanks to "That will be all". I think was a middle class worker for humans, but not really a high class gem
I think "off color" is a derogatory Gem term for Gems that are defective or inefficient in some way, in the same way that "clarity" is used as a term of respect and authority. Jasper suggested that any Gems that didn't fit into Gem society were destroyed, but with the dwindling Homeworld resources the Diamonds may have decided that defective subjects were better than no subjects at all. And when Holly Blue Agate was yelling at the Earth-grown Quartzes, she only called the skinny Jasper and short Carnelian "off color."
What I thought also is that off colored gems, like gems that have a more faded color like Peridot, are known as lesser and lower class. This is because homeworld has to "Make due" with what they have and ended up creating gems that are Era 2, or possibly even up to Era 3 which are extremely lesser and treated like they are actual trash. Although I do agree with yours as well because rubies seem like a general "military" gem. Yet I always thought mixed colors were better for 2 diamonds. Green for blue and Yellow. Red would have been lesser rose quartz when it comes to military /grunt work for Pink Diamond. Hell, pink herself is an off color diamond. Maybe she was an Era 2 diamond?
I don't think pearl is an off coloured gem since she is just called Pearl and White Diamond also known as The Diamond so I think she`s White Diamonds former Pearl.
i think the gems are ranked from the mohs scale because pearls are considered low ranked gems and they are a 3.4-4 on the scale and sapphires are high ranked and a 8 on the hardness scale, and the diamonds are a solid 10 on the scale which is the hardest it goes.
even their hair mirrors their diamonds. Gems under blue diamond have textured hair that "flows" downward with soft curves whereas gems under yellow have sharp angular hair pointing upward.
I think coloration but also cut has some say in a gem's rank. Peridot is green yes but she's also very short. She had to be given limb enhancers in order to do her job and be considered useful in gem society. She also refers to Diamonds as perfect and clearly views herself as little more than a insect compared to them. Pearl likely maybe in a similar boat with her oval shaped gem and possibly off color.

I think off color gems, are gems that have been harvested and repurposed. multiple different types of gems melt together to make new colors. perhaps the amethyst are blue and pink gems that melted together and repurposed as soldiers, that why they have friendly personalities. also I think Jasper is an off colored gem that had more pink or red gems used to form her, hence the stripes on her face. I'm think there was a civil war between diamond courts and off colors as a result of a fire attack that melt enemies together. only way of repurposing melt gems was adding more gems to a mold to fill in missing pieces.
I'm pretty sure the specification for yellow and blue diamond is because they're the only diamonds we know. Pink is shattered and white has yet to be revealed or even mentioned (other than by peridot)

Jaspers can also be blue. All of them are blue, or CAN be blue. Agate and Jasper comes in all colors.
The reason why they're all blue is because of the phrase, "Where's their diamond?" meaning that they belong to BLUE diamond.

The rubies tho, our Ruby didn't say which court she came from (and she has never had a diamond insignia) and YD's rubies are the only thing bothering me a little. They're red gems that means they would have likely been in Pink's court except that Leggy was "recently made"/is the youngest and assigned to yellow. This would imply that even if a diamond is shattered then gems that would be assigned to their court would still be made and assigned to another court, possibly based on class (Rubies are common foot soldiers, being warrior class they'd get sent to YD who seems to mostly manage the fighting gems)

I keep seeing people consider the term "off-color" to refer to the entire Famethyst at the Zoo. But I always thought Holly only referred to the Jaspers as the "hideous off-color Betas", because they're from the lesser Beta Kindergarten.
If the mere color of a gem warranted such disdain from the upper class, then why was our Jasper viewed as so important? She was prioritized even more than Yellow Diamond's own Peridot and rubies.

i think people went to saying off colors was relating to holly blue way too fast because i think that they missed that she didnt say "you off color betas" she said "even you off color betas" and then she points to skinny and carnelian. The fact that she points to skinny and carnelian makes me think that she was talking just about the gems from the beta kindergarten because you know skinny and carnelian come from the beta kindergarten. I think that she said off color because shevwas talking about the beta kindergarten gems being defective or off color. The reason i think that is because you can tell that the jaspers are off color if you compare them to the "perfect" jasper you can tell that the "defective" jaspers have more dull colors to them. If the famethyst is anything to go by you can tell that they have very vibrant colors but the jaspers from the famethyst have a lot duller colors and thats why i think they were called off colors because they are somewhat off color.
what im thinking is going to happen in off colors is that were going to see more defective gems or gems who came out incorrectly. and what i meant was that the gems who came out correctly in the famethyst because you can also see that our amerhyst is also a bit duller.
That and the Amethysts are from the Alpha kindergarten.

She called the Betas Off-coloured gems, Amethysts aren't Betas, so I expect it to be more about gems like arth Jaspers who have uneven colorations, additional colours etc. Perhaps true Jaspers are meant to be just orange-yellow without dark-orange lines

One of the biggest questions Ive had for the longest time is how does lapis fit into this whole equation? She's immensely powerful, and the statement she made during her first confrontation with the crystal gems "DO YOU EVEN REMEMBER WHO I USE TO BE?!" She was a high class gem, and must have been of some level of importance within Gem society.

Now that plenty episodes have been released, this is highly unlikely. 1. Gems like Emerald. Even though Emerald is not the same color as any diamonds, she still is pretty high ranking ( She's probaby high ranking because she has multiple big ships, and the diamonds wouldn't give that many ships to a low ranked gem.) 2. Rose = PD (Pink Diamond) Even though she wasn't a diamond, quartzes aren't highly ranked.
i was under the impression that off color would mean just that, off color, aka not the exact right color for the gem, a little too light, a little too dark, slightly off in hue, defects. and with how jasper describes defects, they are no doubt the lest valuable of there type of gem, if not least valuable of all the gems.
the beta kindergarten was made in sandstone which is high in silica, light colored quarts powder, so they would almost all likely be lighter in color then there gem ideal.
I think that even if it's not gems that have been a sleeper cell for Rose they could just be gems that end up following Steven because of who he is and how he carries himself. I'm excited to see the new episodes and see how these cliffhangers resolve.. 0-0
I had my own theory that maybe some crystal gems were swept up in the evacuation to Homeworld. And then ended up having to pretend they were loyal to the authority and live on Homeworld. Presumably they'd side with Rose/Steven if the chance arose. This kind of works with your idea of spies.

Holly Blue only calls the jaspers off colours but I think this fits because the amethysts are purple with is a combination of blue and red, but jaspers are orange, which is the opposite of blue on the colour spectrum.
Well, the Pearls match their Diamonds colors yet they don't have a high rank - they're basically pets.
Matthew Masucci but you explained it, they're pearls, pearls are accessories to other gems so they tend to match the color of their owner. Even when matching a diamond they're still a low class form of gem seen as items

And Lapis? I think her unwillingness to cooperate with the Crystal Gems or Peridot was mainly because of the events she associates with them: being trapped, being a prisoner, being used like a tool... She liked Steven after seeing a bit of what he was like.

I just thought of something... What if Blue Pearl was Rose's spy? Right before "What's the use of feeling Blue", she didn't seem interested in making Blue Diamond feel better, like Yellow Diamond commanded, and only began to sing after Yellow Pearl pressured her. Such behavior could be hinting that Blue Pearl doesn't care for her job all that much, while Yellow Pearl is completely devoted to her Diamond. If Blue Pearl really was working for Rose at the time of the rebellion, she wouldn't have had a way to return to Earth after the corruption song was casted, so she found herself stuck to her job forever. But with Steven going to Homeworld, she now has another chance to be free.
Holly Blue specifically said "Even you hideous, off-colour beta's" implying that the Amethysts and other gems from the prime kindergarten are not considered off-colour.

Something that might be worth mentioning is the way the gems' colors relate to highlighters. Blue + yellow = green, pink + yellow = orange, pink + blue = purple. Some gems may be created by two diamonds and so their colors are different.
Do what you want with the info. Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn't. There's really no support for a theory though

I wonder if now that the episode is out, you realize Off-color is a synonym to defective. Fusions, mutations, etc. Quartz soldier > Skinny Jasper, Sideways/short Carnelian, that is off-color. Rubies, Quartz, Peridots, all have a purpose to fill. And as they fill that, are likely not off-color.
What about Topaz?

Topaz was very quick to switch sides and if it weren't for Aquamarine threatening her I think she would have gone through with it. Why would a high ranking gem be so easily swayed? Either rank doesn't affect a gems general disposition or off-colour gems aren't the only low ranking gems. Perhaps Topazes in general are low ranking gems but these two particular Topazes have climbed the ranks somehow.

There is a flaw with your theory Lapis was treated as a prisoner in the episode jailbreak, Lapis was a blue gem; Pearl belonged to the RoseQuartz hence her pinkish off color.
This is old but his definition was kind of off. But in context this was before the episode so good prediction.
i thought it was more along the lines of steven being sentenced to whatever punishment and meeting other defective gems waiting to be broken while imprisoned and later becomes allies with them

I don't think colors means high ranking. My reasoning for this is a theory I saw on tumblr concerning Jasper. Jasper was from Pink Diamond's court, as many of the Famethyst, BUT she was moved to Yellow Diamond's court. Why? Blue Diamond wanted to take Pink Diamond's legacy to remember her, while Yellow wanted to move on (in a way). In "Hit the Diamond", the Runy squad stated they're looking for Jasper, NOT Peridot. Peridot already had send in reports about Earth that Homeworld later used, but instead of her, they were looking for Jasper. The question is, why? Simple, Jasper was made "the perfect quarts soldier". Had it been one of the Famethyst, I assure you they wouldnt have bothered to look for them like they did with Peridot. Jasper, was different. She was bigger, stronger, fought on the first war for Earth, she's valuable to the Diamonds and that's why they placed her so high to the point of sending her to the planet they have been battling for years. She's not yellow or blue, either, heck, she's not even Pink, but instead of moving her to Blue's court, she was moved to Yellow's, a court that's hinted to be more set on military standards as seen with Yellow's design. That's why I don't think colors have to do with ranks that much, but that's just my theory.

I could be wrong but I figured off-color just meant the gems weren't the color they were supposed to be. Like a carnelian that wasn't red enough. They were the cheap, impure versions of their ideal forms.
I otherwise I don't understand why they wouldn't just not make green, purple, orange etc. gems.

this made me think of, back then when people was wondering about Bismuth... Bismuth is a very rainbowie gem, but it was not the question about, the question was "why bismuth was a Gem if it was mostly made of metal?" Then, we figured out Bismuth comes in the shape of a crystal and is composed for more than just bismuth, and also grows as any other quartz crystal. Also, many quartz have different colors due to the metal oxide around the ground they grow from. I Noticed that, Prime KG quartz are Amethyst, and they might have that color cause of the ground, and Beta KG quartz are Orangy or redish, just like the color of the desert ground it is located. If we think a little about Peridot, she mentions that she was made when Homeworld was running out of resources, at the 2nd era... This makes me think of her color as the result of combining the Resources in HW of Blue and yellow Diamond, but then Peridot says her Diamond is Yellow. Now, we dont know. May be Off color refers to gems who were not made in HW, or who no longer serve to their original owner, Pink Diamond.
I always thought Amethysts were considered not off color. As in, Holly is talking to the Jaspers/Carnelians when she says "you hideous off color betas", as she's saying they are different from the Famethysts. So she doesn't consider the Amethysts "off-color"... idk. I'm a new sub, so this is the first time I'm hearing this theory, and my first thoughts on it.
I made a comment similar to this on Cartoon Universe's theory about "off colors". But I have to ask it again. Why is it so hard to realize that Holly Blue Agate was not talking to the Amethysts when she said "Off color betas". She was talking to the gems from the Beta Kindergarten. That is why she used the world Beta and why she said "even" you off color betas she was excluding the Amethysts from that statement and was talking about the Jaspers and Carnelian.
Granted this theory still could work if purple is considered close enough to blue. Since a red and an orange gem has nothing to do with Blue Diamond. It is just getting frustrating at this point that big SU tubers like Cartoon Universe and Slice of Otaku can't realize Holly Blue Agate was not talking to the Amethysts when she said "Off color betas",

Off Colour seems to mean that the gem simply does not fall into the normality of their gem (Jaspers were made later, so Homeworld thought that Earth Quartzes should all be Amethysts, some gems are overcooked, some end up like the Twins of Rutile, all cross-gem fusions are considered off-colour, etc.)

I think "off color" is a derogatory Gem term for Gems that are defective or inefficient in some way, in the same way that "clarity" is used as a term of respect and authority. Jasper suggested that any Gems that didn't fit into Gem society were destroyed, but with the dwindling Homeworld resources the Diamonds may have decided that defective subjects were better than no subjects at all. And when Holly Blue Agate was yelling at the Earth-grown Quartzes, she only called the skinny Jasper and short Carnelian "off color."

What I thought also is that off colored gems, like gems that have a more faded color like Peridot, are known as lesser and lower class. This is because homeworld has to "Make due" with what they have and ended up creating gems that are Era 2, or possibly even up to Era 3 which are extremely lesser and treated like they are actual trash.
Although I do agree with yours as well because rubies seem like a general "military" gem. Yet I always thought mixed colors were better for 2 diamonds. Green for blue and Yellow.

I don't think pearl is an off coloured gem since she is just called Pearl and White Diamond also known as The Diamond so I think she`s White Diamonds former Pearl.
i think the gems are ranked from the mohs scale because pearls are considered low ranked gems and they are a 3.4-4 on the scale and sapphires are high ranked and a 8 on the hardness scale, and the diamonds are a solid 10 on the scale which is the hardest it goes.

I think coloration but also cut has some say in a gem's rank. Peridot is green yes but she's also very short. She had to be given limb enhancers in order to do her job and be considered useful in gem society. She also refers to Diamonds as perfect and clearly views herself as little more than a insect compared to them. Pearl likely maybe in a similar boat with her oval shaped gem and possibly off color.

I think off color gems, are gems that have been harvested and repurposed. multiple different types of gems melt together to make new colors. perhaps the amethyst are blue and pink gems that melted together and repurposed as soldiers, that why they have friendly personalities. also I think Jasper is an off colored gem that had more pink or red gems used to form her, hence the stripes on her face.
I'm think there was a civil war between diamond courts and off colors as a result of a fire attack that melt enemies together. only way of repurposing melt gems was adding more gems to a mold to fill in missing pieces.
I'm pretty sure the specification for yellow and blue diamond is because they're the only diamonds we know. Pink is shattered and white has yet to be revealed or even mentioned (other than by peridot)
