Since your average hack writer (or dumb viewer) is incapable of thinking about ideas, the only thing left for them is the movie's “look”. The hacks at Netflix think that Conan = “muscles” + “the Frazetta 'look'”, and as long as there are muscles and it looks like Frazetta...well...that's Conan. Job done. EDIT: Whether it's more Vallejo or Frazetta is splitting hairs. The point is, there's a specific style in terms of art direction that people associate with Conan. For the sake of brevity, I just said “Frazetta”...but we all what that means.
No, it's impossible to do Conan at this point. Conan was anything but progressive and people of the new age seem incapable of looking at things within the proper context in which they are meant to be seen....so easily offended, they are.
Actually Conan was more progressive than you think. Conan believe in strength and skills. He had high regard for Belit the Pirate Queen and Red Sonja, even his Queen wasn't passive. Conan could even make friend with enemies of his people. What "Progressive" don't like is just surface stuff buff men and scandily clad women.
Yeah, Conan has his own moral code, but he is not a superhero or warrior of social justice, and he is very much a product of the brutal Hyborian age. Killing, robbing, drinking and wenching were pretty much his main hobbies before winning his kingdom, and if they discard that there is no point in this project.
@@BlackLotus30 Conan's universe was anything but progressive. Conan thought highly of a handful of women, but the rest of them were only things to be enjoyed or nothing worth mentioning. LotR is not much different in that regard....a handful of exceptional women, but mostly just exceptional men. If you attempt to add a progressive flair to it, it just becomes a dumpster fire.
I am afraid you are right about Netflix Conan, but you are wrong about Red Sonja, because in her original comics and novels, she is equal to Conan in every way except of strength, and considered to be the best female warrior in Hyborian age. Thank God Fredric Malmberg who owns rights to Conan, does not have rights to Red Sonja, so we will not see her in this NETFLIX woke crap as an angry feminist and social justice warrior.
As a massive Conan fan, avid reader of the short stories of Robert E. Howard, as well as a stickler for the sometimes contradictory pseudo-history Howard developed for Conan (The Hyborean Age), I can say with almost complete certainty: No. It just wouldn't work today. Conan is a figurative representation of masculinity through barbarity. He embodies Howard's distaste for the 'alien' concept of civilization, and the 'weak', feminine societies that develop from civility. (Although Howard notes that there is merit in many aspects of civilization.) Regardless of the tonal and most likely superficial misunderstandings any writer would have of a Conan series for Netflix, I do not doubt that they would choose to focus the narrative on women or perhaps the racial prejudices Howard held in his youth. Say what you want about the films with Arnold, the truth is they managed to capture the essence of sword and sorcery pretty well for the time. People forget, but before the first Conan film, fantasy movies were often derided by the general public. Many people consider the first Conan film as "So bad its good" but really, it's just straight up good. The screenplay writer for Apocalypse Now fucking penned the project, and it shows. It was a gritty, deep, and musical arthouse epic disguised as a campy action movie, perhaps a little too well. Anyway, Conan's universe is a love letter to the various barbaric societies throughout history (mostly of Europe and Asia) with the Cimmerians (being Howard's Celts) at the center of this universe. You can already see why this would be "Problematic" in the eyes of a certain crowd.
Many are under the mistaken impression that the Covid vaccines, which don’t even prevent transmission, will allow for a return back to normal life and that will be the end of it. Just these ‘jabs’ and they will leave you alone to live your life. Once you have become part of the Covid vaccine program they will never let you go. Production of new vaccines are already under way to tackle so called ‘SARS- CoV-2 Variants’. Certain governments will be able to target specific groups with a variety of vaccines, some will be poisoned directly and or sterilised, and the rest kept in control, vaccine passports, for fear of loss to essential services and freedom of movement if they do not comply. At least that’s their flawed and confused plan. These are power hungry governments and big pharmaceutical opportunists, not your friends. Do you think in a nation with assisted euthanasia and terminations to full term where the infant is left to die on a cold hospital table that they really have your best interests in mind. The Covid vaccinations cover everyone else. As Australians we need to frustrate these criminal attempts to make us dependent on experimental gene altering vaccines which will damage our natural immunity against natural colds and flus
I’d rather it not even be made. Those old books are so violent and good, there is no way the Whiney boys in Hollywood will portray these stories correctly.
I'm fairly certain it won't get made. And if by some miracle it does, it will likely be so far from the original source material as to be easily ignored.
I feel like Conan would have a much better chance being allowed to be it's own thing on a channel like HBO or even something like Amazon, the problem with Netflix at times is they can turn out a good show/movie once in a while but they are too focused on pandering to everyone and watering it down so that it doesn't reach it's full potential. Conan NEEDS to be somewhere where it can be allowed to follow Howard's writing but also just not get caught up in the pandering and forced ideals we have to put in things nowadays.
That SOUNDS perfect. I've been ever perplexed why they've NEVER done Howard's actual material. They've always produced bad interpretations of the source material. Some of it deplorable. It's like having produced an entire Bond franchise and never using Ian Fleming's novels. Marvel (and before that, Lancer) nailed it (chronologically), like this announcer says. It would be great to have an episodic series that adapts all the GREAT Howard Tales of Conan and intersperse (quality) original content. Howard wrote a treasure trove of vivid, fantastical tall tail and inter-crossing stories lines (sequencing Terantino style), powerful characters and exotic places. It's the best of its genre and its been completely ignored.
I 100% expect them to ruin anything Conan related. I wish I could get excited for some live action Conan, but I'm just so certain that they won't do it correctly, I don't even want to think about it.
Only one way to make that happen: talk with your wallets. Look at the new Battlefield game: fans have spoken out by being vocal and not buying BFV so now the company did a 180, actively going against sjw’s. Conan - every alpha male wants to be him, every attractive woman wants to be with him. I think we all know how this is going to turn out in the soy infested waters of Netflix production decisions these days.
No. It will be celibate feminist Conan who gets lead around by the tougher smarter woman he meets. Kinda like what they did with the Witcher, he’ll be a supporting character in his own show.
They tend to prefer raceflip white characters rather then using existing black characters. Conan are supposed to have a black friend that have a similar built as Conan and he even know a bit of magic. There are also the possibility of suddenly inserting a sister of Conan snd give her a lot of screentime. As I understand it Conan may actually have a sister but she isn't about adventuring in that case.
Will they do this highly masculine character justice? What do you think? Come on, they've proven once and again they hate masculinity. Hope is nice and all, but this is pure naive
Conan The Barbarian is what I call a "Guilty Pleasure". Many men wish/fantasize they were 190+ cm tall, muscular, able to battle monsters and *bang* a harem of hot women. HOWEVER, that does NOT mean that the majority of men who like Conan stories are misogynists/chauvinists. Like I said, Conan is a "Guilty Pleasure". Today, many would consider Conan too misogynistic/chauvinistic, hence any new adaptation of it will be too watered down and doomed to fail.
Hopefully, Netflix will recognize that the general audience (and population) aren’t interested in woke stories. With Disney losing record amounts of money on woke propaganda, some might try going in the opposite direction. We’ll see.
@@hardattackdj One would hope they would see this but it seems they are totally blind to the situation or have gone so far they don't want to have that or we were wrong and double or triple down!
My two bits. I think Netflixs is the perfect place for it since they have no problems with gore, nudity, and abs. What gives me pause is whether they will get Conan's world right. One of the biggest surprises of my reading life was when I finally read the original stories and discovered that (a) Howard was a mesmerizing writing and (b) that Conan was the main character, but his world was one as well. To me, this is more like if the Lord of the Rings focused on the adventures of Strider as he wanders the ruins of middle earth trying to keep fed and keep alive. There is so much to the ancient and fallen world that Conan lived in, and now we have the technology to do it. To just reduce him to Muscle Guy fights Bad Guys is to miss a lot of the atmosphere of the stories. They also need to cast right as well. As popular as he was, Arnie was not Howard's Conan. Momoa was. Arnie was a lumbering lunk. Howard's Conan is a swift, smart fighter, shrewd at reading people, not particularly talkative, and not particularly eager to get into fights if he doesn't have to. I wouldn't saddle him with sidekicks either like the tv show tried. Conan's a solo act. He'll join with others if he has to, but basically he's always on the move. The only drawback is that, like "John Carter," Conan's stories have been so plundered already that people might wonder what's the big deal. We'll see...
Calling it now: Conan will be a depressed hobbo that will be "shown the way" by a powerful, smart, charismatic and totally mysandrist woman (think Red Sonja after hours browsing Tumblr). Also, he'll have a daughter for some reason
No way this series is made properly. Netflix is the most woke, and SJW as any company today. They fucking doubled down on cuties.....ffs. this will be full of anti masculine messaging, gender swapping and a mystery box plot with the most important girl e er as the main carachter. Amazon's woke warrior pulled the plug. Netflix would only green light this unless the story and cast were woke and feminist which is the complete opposite of what Conan is. Why people think they will get anything decent out of netflix amazes me, 95% of their original catalog is complete, low budget shit. The other 5% is meh at best. Oh, and dont forget these are the idiots who gave us cuties and big mouth.
After Cuties I don't trust Netflix, also i canceled Netflix and I was one of the few who sang their praises....when you lose the diehards like me it's all over for you.....it's all over for Netflix 😈
Beyond the political climate, there is so much in the world of Conan that has to be tempered for it to work: a strong visual primordial aesthetic, a barbaric tone, unique language and iconography, musical themes, costumes, cosmic horror, wretched beasts and a level of violence that must be achieved for it to "feel", "look" and "sound" like a Conan story. That, in itself, is a huge hurdle, much less anything else. If they green light it...great...but their greatest challenge will be to harness the "pillars" that make those stories wonderful and timeless. I just hope they find the right director, and art director, to achieve it.
Crom! I have never prayed to you before. I have no tongue for it. No one, not even you, will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that today, two stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Crom; so grant me one request. Grant me an awesome Conan tv show! And if you do not listen, then to hell with you
Of course not! A huge, muscular man with a giant chopper who's only motivations are war, glory, the death of others, and as much boozing an wrenching as physically possible... ...done faithfully such a series would be hugely popular, and it wouldn't take much money or work given the setting and most of Howard's Conan novels are short stories anyway. But there's no chance any "right-on" media company would go for a faithful adaptation, especially as "faithful" implies "honest". My bet is Netflix will cast Natalie Portman in the titular role just as soon as it dawns in the M-she-U producers that she won't make a good Thor. What could be better than a really bad idea? A cast-off really bad idea?
I LOVE Robert E. Howard's writing. It would be nice to see it adapted faithfully. I had decent hopes for the Jason Mamoa film...but... I was still hoping for CONAN: THE KING, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, to be greenlit. If this series starred Arnold, and included a younger version of himself, that would be cool. Now, faithfully adapting Kull and Solomon Kane, would interest me even more. Thanks for the scoop, Good Sir!
I would all for a Arnold Schwarzenegger cameo in this Conan Netflix series. I personally got into Conan through the Arnold movies but I truly became a Conan fan through the Darkhorse trades of the Conan Robert E Howard stories. Plus the frost giant his daughter is one of my favorite and was the first Conan comic that I picked up from the dark horse Imprint.
They might have been able to do this back in the 90's but sadly it's really to late peoples balls have fallen off and until they find them again things aren't getting any better.
I don't think these are Conan-friendly times. However, if it gets made there will be inevitable comparisons with Game of Thrones, which is too bad, because they're very different despite the "swords and sorcery" similarity. Conan is about one man's adventures, whereas GoT is more about politics and rivalries. Anyway, if they do it by following the original material (and subsequent additions, such as the adaptations done for the Ace/Lancer paperback series) then I think it will be very cool.
"If they do it right". That's all I can think whenever I see an attempt at bringing classics into the cancel age. Stay true to the source material and it has infinite potential. But I just don't have any trust in that they will.
Jennifer Salke rejected the pitch for one reason and one reason only: Because that story, The Frost Giant's daughter depicts a female villain... THAT'S IT that was her entire reasoning to think that was a sexist piece of anti-women propaganda.
At least it should be out of Copyright by now as long as they adapt Howards own work and do original stories. Still with a woke agenda it wil not matter anyway.
Umm... there will be cold day in Hell when any place let alone wokeflix does series like Conan right, only one I could see doing would be some Japanese animation studio. Seriously have you seen what shows&movies Netflix is pumping out more and more? Conan is literally everything current media "leaders" hate and want to get rid of from entertainment yes even games books, ofc tv&movies, they are even trying to sensor anime.
I rather wait a bit until this progressive woke sjw feminist culture finally died before making them. Then it should be done as part of a culture that is a backlash against those.
Did you see the movie a few years back? Earth has three times Mars gravity, so they couldn't decide whether that made John into Superman, or just barely capable of beating a man his own size. So it changed wildly from one scene to the next.
@@stevenscott2136 yeah I saw it. I was entertained but still disappointed. And I know what you mean it felt like they didn’t know what to do with him or Dejah Thoris. And the villains weren’t very great either. I think someone could do a great job with the Barsoom series, but it should not be Disney. We’ll see what happens
Would love a "Tower Of The Elephant", "A Witch Is Born", "Black Colossus" or any of T. Truman's King Conan arc., not to mention any of Howard's early stuff. Something that progresses in time from a young travelling Conan to Aquilonian king. One can hope...
Hopefully this series will be based on Robert E Howard's stories and decades of comic books and give us a much faithful Conan than the movies. Legendary Frank Frazetta and lots of comic book artists have done an incredible library of art design this project can take advantage of. And I really hope this project won't be watered down and go woke. A Conan series doesn't even need to go woke, because Conan travels all of Hyborea, meets different races of people, sees different cultures, also lots of cosmopolit cities, meets and romances lots of strong women... The producers can put diversity cast all along the story. They just need to be patient and respect the Hyborean World lore's geography.
You could take The Savage Sword of Conan comic book and map three series easily with epic content. First young Conan wandering in the South and start his career as thief and mercenary, next older Conan as pirate, brigand and general and finally middle-aged/old Conan as king of Aquilonia. We could see Hyborian Age come to life and loads of great recurring characters. Of course what is going to happen is that Conan will be emasculated and sidelined, and they will butcher couple of Howard stories and tell how they went to the source.
That would be the right way to do things...and that's exactly why this show won't play out that way. They will probably rip off the '82 movie again, use plots written by some guy who's never read the original stories or comic, then inject woke politics into it to pander to the phantom audience.
Thought: You do a Conan movie with Arnold ... somewhere in there, probably at the beginning, Arnold reminisces on his earlier life of adventure ... you then use that clip at the beginning of the series to backstory every (or every other) story with another, younger actor. Just a thought.
Fingers crossed they see the success of shows like Cobra Kai and The Boys that been well-received by not shying away from things considered "offensive" by some. This could be an awesome shared universe with Kull, Red Sonja, Solomon Kane, etc. Just let Conan be Conan and crush some skulls with a femur bone.
As many others have said, there is no way that a Conan faithful to Howard's original tales is made.

Let's say they do Conan faithfully, would it be cancelled by SJWS?
@@BlackLotus30 Conan's universe was anything but progressive. Conan thought highly of a handful of women, but the rest of them were only things to be enjoyed or nothing worth mentioning. LotR is not much different in that regard....a handful of exceptional women, but mostly just exceptional men. If you attempt to add a progressive flair to it, it just becomes a dumpster fire.
I'm expecting Conan to be a black trans paraplegic in a wheelchair while red sonja does all the work and names herself Conan Skywalker.

" Sonja Skywalker"

Lmao spot on
Dirk.... you made me laugh so hard.
0% trust they'll pull out off. Could be great. If love to see a good, high budget Conan, but they'll f it up
As a massive Conan fan, avid reader of the short stories of Robert E.
(Although Howard notes that there is merit in many aspects of civilization.)
Regardless of the tonal and most likely superficial misunderstandings any writer would have of a Conan series for Netflix, I do not doubt that they would choose to focus the narrative on women or perhaps the racial prejudices Howard held in his youth.
Nah, I've already cancelled my Netflix's account. There's no way I'm gonna go back
Many are under the mistaken impression that the Covid vaccines, which don’t even prevent transmission, will allow for a return back to normal life and that will be the end of it.
Exactly what happened to the Witcher!
I take it, you haven't seen what HBO did to "Watchmen"?
@@PistonDriven No one has seen HBO Watchmen. That's why it was cancelled.
Amazon has become woke, so they're no good.
Sometimes HBO can give freedom to people who really shouldn't have it. See Watchmen and Game Of Thrones season 8.
I say wait until Hollywood is completely burned down and we get some good talent that rises from the ashes.
All the SJW's need to be arrested and sent to re-education camps.
Only one way to make that happen: talk with your wallets. I do not trust Netflix to get it right. Hell the 1982 movie is one of my favorites. I also am a big fan of Robert E Howard, from my home state so no shit.

For the writers, get Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, & Michael Fleisher who wrote both Conan & Kull comics series at Marvel & wrote the screenplay for the 2 Conan movies in the 1980s.
I expect this to do as well as the last Conan series.
Look at the two Conan movie versions. It is not the recent remake but good old 80ies style Conan that still get the rewatch and memes today.
MAN would LOVE to see a Conan again - I read the books as a young kid and comics - loved the live action movies as well both Arnold and Jason
Conan finds baby Yoda and delivers him safely from the evil empire.
If it's Netflix it will be a twerking female Baby Yoda...!
Conan - every alpha male wants to be him, every attractive woman wants to be with him. I think we all know how this is going to turn out in the soy infested waters of Netflix production decisions these days.
The long answer? No.
"What is best in life?" - To crush your enemies. See them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their women"
No. It will be celibate feminist Conan who gets lead around by the tougher smarter woman he meets. Kinda like what they did with the Witcher, he’ll be a supporting character in his own show.
Wonder if they'll make Conan black or gay just to check the boxes.
Why not both? Then everyone will be happy :D /s

James Bond was also a male fantasy and look what Hollywood is doing to that. Conan will get the same treatment.
@@fattiger6957 So true. So, I guess time for me to go into the "closet". This would be a new type of "closet".

Conan is going woke
Better it remain asleep if that's the case
So instead of raping and pillaging it will be consensual looting and women doing the violence?

Also, he'll have a daughter for some reason
and both Red Sonja and Conan's daughter are angry lesbians, for reasons!
I suspect that Conan have several daughters and sons spread around the Hyborean world but they are unkown to him.
Love the idea of King Conan (Arnold) retelling his life story.
This will be almost completely impossible to do correctly in the current political climate.
After Cuties I don't trust Netflix, also i canceled Netflix and I was one of the few who sang their praises....when you lose the diehards like me it's all over for you.....it's all over for Netflix
😈
Conan The Kiddie Fiddler.
I've been a Conan fan since I was a kid and read all the original books. If they go 'woke' with this new series I'm going to be really disappointed.
A REAL Conan series would be a cash cow and off limits in childmode. Then we will get complaints from parents that fail to use the childmode setting.
Well then prepare for disappointment. My advice: forget you ever heard about this.
Would love to see The Tower of the Elephant or A Witch Shall be Born made into a series with the production values of GoT.
Netflix: where should we put the gay character.
"red sonja can't sleep with men unless......"
Netflix : hold on. say no more..
And if you do not listen, then to hell with you
For everyone who get their hopes up, I hate to break it to you. It's gonna be: Wokenan - Kings and Queens (mainly Queens ya all)
They need to do a faithful “lord of the rings” style adaptation of Robert E Howard’s original novels. If they do this it will be a massive success.
Be prepared for a Conan that questions his homosexuality and relies on women's smarts to do anything.
Can’t wait for Conan x Subotai garbage to start rolling out
I would all for a Arnold Schwarzenegger cameo in this Conan Netflix series.
I don't even care, I just want them to leave my toys alone.
I loved seeing all those old Conan covers. I still have the full series of mid 80’s reprints. The covers are all sick.
Tip: DON'T DO A CBS.....

At least it should be out of Copyright by now as long as they adapt Howards own work and do original stories. Still with a woke agenda it wil not matter anyway.

If we’re getting a Conan TV show now than someone definitely has to do a John Carter TV show, these could be done perfectly.
