I think that there was a Conan the Adventurer animated series that portrayed a some what watered down version of Conan. In this, he reminded me more of Marvel Thor.
Zub is awesome. He was writhing fantasy way before. He did some books for D&D comics series and he was the creator of the FREAKING AWESOME Skull Kickers! When I saw his name I knew I would be happy with his Conan Stuff.
I think the only way a GOOD Conan film can happen is if it is done as a somewhat independently, without the meddling of a big studio like Disney trying to water down the IP for political correctness or greed trying to please everyone. If a Conan film takes the "Joker" approach: relatively modest budget, strong director who understands the character and Conan's world, strong casting and a STRONG story.....Conan might avoid the character assassinations other IPs have suffered . At present Disney does not own the movie rights to Conan. I pray it stays that way.
@@alkirk6 I cheered with JOY when Marvel lost the rights to Conan earlier this year. The last issues of Conan at Marvel were troubled with insane political correctness. Great video! My biggest issue with comics today is simply the cost. Books are averaging $4 or $5 each, and I don't think they justify the expense. And while I get inflation, they are still at least $1 over what they should be. And they don't have lower prices for the digital issues, as that would hurt their paper sales.
I read the REH Conan stuff along with the DeCamp/Carter contributions long before the movie was made. The Frank Frazetta artwork on the covers caught my eye. I collected the Marvel comics right from the start, including 'Savage Sword'. Still have them all. First film was not bad but not really REH's Conan despite the fact that they took a few ideas from his work. Second film was awful, as was the more recent one. I'm not familiar with the newest Conan comics. If Jason Aaron wrote them I have my doubts they are worthwhile. Now the Cimmerian is hanging out with the Avengers? Ridiculous.

I miss epic movies set in the Hibernian Age. Savage Conan would be the man to resurrect that done right and with a world set and built right for storytelling.
Excellent review as always. Personally, I think it has more to do with people not getting paid enough and corporate greed why comic sales have declined more over the years. Hard to justify paying for for multiple comics and subscriptions when you got debts, family, or just skyrocketing cost of living everywhere.
Rick Maurer : cost is a big issue for me. The comic itself doesn't need to be so super fancy, so long as the story line and artwork are good. $5 dollars for 10-15 pages of story & art is a tough sell...
I have never read the Conan comics, but as lifelong fan of fantasy and science fiction I have enjoyed many of the original Robert E. Howard stories. I will look into the comics when I'm next at my local comic shop. Thanks for the overview.
I have the original Valley of the Worm adaptation and I love it. I have read the original story, so when I saw the adaptation in my comic shop, I knew I had to have it.
Today's Marvel is not MY Marvel. I miss many of the Dark Horse Conan tales.....though I watched it slide sadly downhill also. I am glad that Marvel has issued the old run in Omnibus form!
Nearly a year later, I can't help but think that it would have been cooler if it was King Conan that was brought to the Marvel Age. A Conan that was older, wiser, but still fierce and with the will and experience of leading warriors into battle. Bonus points if he was wearing his black armor from the King Conan stories.
Just wanted to point out that RUclips hid this from my Subscriptions feed for some reason. It was in the "Recommended" section of the home page, but never showed up elsewhere. So you know, they're still up to their usual fuckery it seems.
Reading the original books and the comic books is on the very long to-do list, but what really excites me is another Conan movie - and I saw your other awesome videos which made me pine for better adaptations - but I want to see Arnie as King Conan. With the gore of the 1st, with the fantastical of the 2nd...
Jim Zub knows Conan and knows REH. I’ve been buying everything except the two Age of Conan series, and the best stuff has been by Zub. Jason Aaron seemed to want to tell his magnum opus but hadn’t established any trust with the audience or that he could even write Conan. I agree that his 12 issues felt like a series of one shots. They weren’t bad, but a full story would have been appreciated.
Conan is NOT their character, that's the key...the franchise was paid for. Because of that it must be treated with some respect. Marvel has no such issues with their own properties.
Thanks for a really well informed overview of Conan's first year back at Marvel. I agree with your observations - a bit of a mixed bag so far. Looking forward to your follow up. Jim Dalton, Dublin, Ireland.
Well I've been watching this video so many times but now is the first time since actually finishing the Aaron & Asrar Conan line. It was also my first ever comic experience so bare that in mind.. but I liked it very much. I do however understand the problems you and other people see in it. I'm looking forward to seek out the other stories, so thanks for these great videos :)
I've read all the new Conan series' and I enjoyed them all. The stories and art in all of them were great. And the serialized novellas were a nice bonus. As for having Conan in the modern Marvel age: awesome. You wouldn't think, but he fits in just fine. He is still unapologetically Conan, and doesn't seemed fazed by the world around him. I think Marvel has done a great job with everyone's favorite Cimmerian barbarian.
I've been a Conan fan since I was very young. To date have the complete Savage Sword Of Conan series, Including the 2019 series. I was very disappointed they discontinued TSSOC and agree with your review. I hope they change their minds and pick it back up at some point. For now, I await my 12th issue of CTB as, as you mentioned, has not yet been released. I too LOVED the gambler issues. Very edgy and it brought me back to the early years of the comic stories. Great review!!!
I was so excited about Marvel getting the license back but that first storyline just went on... and on.... and on. It became the storytelling equivalent of an endurance test. Aaron won.
Maybe it's a regional rights issue, but Marvel Unlimited, the digital subscription service, has yet to add the new Conan series to its library, let alone provide the classic original series.
I've honestly been enthralled by the flagship storyline yet I do agree it was madness to draw it out for over a year. The artwork is wonderful and I feel like the script has been on point in delivering me the immersion of the Conan universe. There was maybe one issue I felt was a tad silly (07) but the story otherwise has been delivered well. That said, again, the last issue should have been out already. Here's hoping when this one becomes a paperback there's renewed interest for it. It honestly deserves it.
Very cool video! But you didn't mention a pretty big detail. In Conan The Barbarian and Savage Sword of Conan (and maybe the Age of Conan titles too, I forget) there are serialized novellas! Both series have a twelve part original novella with one chapter in the back of each issue. I thought that was a really unique and clever way to keep people reading. Anyway it's awesome that you did a video like this, and I really enjoyed hearing your opinions. As for me, I just read Savage Sword and ignored the other titles, because I liked the idea of getting a new writer and artist for each story. In Savage Sword our opinions seem to be different, because I rather enjoyed the Gerry Duggan story, but found the Jim Zub one a bit lacking. (Not horrible, but somewhat predictable.) But my favorite out of all of them was the Roy Thomas story! That was the one where I couldn't wait for part two! As for the explosion of Conan titles under Marvel, I'm afraid that's a symptom of what's wrong with comics today: there's just too much of everything. Too many titles, too many characters, too many stories that barely need to exist. Marvel put out a bunch of Conan titles at once and tied him into their main universe as a sales tool, to get Marvel fans interested in the character again. I hope it worked, but I'm afraid that all these titles are ultimately having the opposite effect. There are so many of them that they dilute interest in any single comic book, because if you don't buy it this week there will always be more coming.
Thanks a lot for this review! I came late to like and read some Conan and for the moment I am focusing on the Epic Collection, the reprints of Dark Horse, and the Savage Sword of Conan Omnibuses. I read only the first volume of Life and Death and 2019 Savage Sword but eventually dropped them as compared to the Dark Horse reprints and the 70's 80's magazine they felt very weak... seems that so far only "old" material is appealing to me.
It would have been cool if they had made the Belit story in Age of Conan in a way that it could fit with her run in the comics in the 70s. Even tough REH created the character comic book Belit is more fleshed out and I would love to know more about her before she met Conan.
I have been a conan fan for 40 plus years have all the SS mags I sold my first 24 issues of The Barbarian and I regret it now but I have to say I agree with all your points and I even look forward to the Savage Avengers every month it is a fun read, but I always will want Conan The Barbarian in the age of Conan not in the present and hopefully we can get a movie or a show rated R of coarse or there's no reason for it
Must admit I’ve disliked all the crossover comics, only interested in Conan in Hyborea, hope savage sword makes a comeback but will continue with Conan the Barbarian
Bryan Malpas : I started buying Conan the Barbarian and Savage Sword (SSOC) again in 2019...the comics shop in my town also has back issues of SSOC ( the magazine size issues from the 1970's-90's). The old issues are far superior in storytelling, size, and artwork ( even though they're black/white). They even cost less at about $3-$4 an issue!
Please, don't tell me Marvel is doing that Crossover baloney with the Conan The Barbarian comic, that nonsense is what drove me away from Mainstream comics in the first place! I don't want to have to buy a Punisher or Spidey comic as part of some multi issue "epic"!
While I agree that Conan is more suited in Hyborea, I enjoyed his crossover appearances. Especially in Savage Avengers. Conan was always a fish-out-of-water character, and seeing him interact with these characters in the modern world is a blast to read. I especially loved it when he swung an unconscious Logan as a weapon, or he used the prosthetic leg of one of the whores he was banging, only for him to back to bed with them after he's killed it.
I freaked out when I saw Conan 2099. I've been working on a spinoff comic of Conan set in the far future for roughly 5 years which you can find on my channel or social media, (Focusing on different characters of course.) Interested to see where things go with the property.
Haven't enjoyed what I've read so far with the new Marvel line of Conan. I still have to finish Savage Sword. Hopefully the new team coming up will do something that will win me back.
I would love to see a high-budget tv series adaptation of "The Nemedian Chronicles",starring Jason Momoa as Conan. Rated-R,with lots of gratuitous violence and nudity, good CGI,locations and some cosmic Lovecraftian Horror thrown in for good measure. Then again, when I see how Netflix butchered "The Witcher",it´s better if they keep their woke hands away from my favorite Cimmerian.
Great review, very informative and helpful. When they announced SSOC I was expecting the old black and white magazine. Black and white being a beautiful art form itself. But it wasn’t which left me disappointed
I've been really on the fence about the new Conan stuff. I mean I really loved the Dark Horse Conan run and wasn't too keen on Marvel getting the rights back. So I'll probably check out the ones Andre said were good like the Savage Sword stories, Valeria and Serpent War just cause that's a cross over that makes sense just like when Elric of Melniboné showed up in the original Conan comics. While the other stuff especially Conan teaming up with Avengers and the Bêlit miniseries (she's one of my favorite characters and the Dark Horse stuff is the be all end all Bêlit and nothing can compete with that adaptation) I really don't have any interest in.
This vid wasn't in my subs feed for some reason. Just a head's up, in case others had the same issue. And can you do a review/look at the Conan The Adventurer cartoon show? It'd be interesting to find out how close to the books/comics it was! :)

This video isn't showing on my subscription tab, only on Recommended. Weird.
Make sure you're still subscribed
Because Set has abandoned you.
@@CrashWeezerman I am thats why it's weird.
@@CrashWeezerman the new toxic femininity still shows up. But not the Conan video.
The clip of Arnold at the end was pretty awesome.
Gotta agree with the last bit you said. The comics have been a tremendous contribution to the Conan franchise whether they from Dark Horse or Marvel.
I miss epic movies set in the Hibernian Age. Savage Conan would be the man to resurrect that done right and with a world set and built right for storytelling.
2020 is the year of Conan. Books are doing well. The games are doing well. People are talking about him.
First time I watched your channel and anything about Conan and I loved it!! I'm definitely gonna subscribe
You have come to the right place, welcome. Check out the Conan playlist.
I have collected but not read the Marvel Conan comics. Just starting today. Hope you are right about having hope in this title.
Arnold could do audio books for Conan. I would buy that.
The Conan stuff is the only Marvel series in the last 5 years that I've liked.
Conan in Savage Avengers is fantastic
Jim Zub is a tremendous writer.
Thank you for this video. Conan was my first comic book hero and Roy's work is my fave. Maybe it's time to go back.
Please make a video of Conan by Dark Horse Comics! From 2004-2018!
Just wanted to point out that RUclips hid this from my Subscriptions feed for some reason. It was in the "Recommended" section of the home page, but never showed up elsewhere. So you know, they're still up to their usual fuckery it seems.
We know :-(
Same here. No notofication from midnight’s edge for quite some time. I have to look you up to see new videos.
@@kjellbjrnasmo480 Do you have notifications set?
Midnight's Edge Yes. All notifications should show, but they dont.
They weren’t bad, but a full story would have been appreciated.
if they can treat their other characters with such care :/ but great video
we are a simple lot. just give us a good story and we'll buy it. apparently, that's too difficult for some people to understand.
Conan is NOT their character, that's the key...the franchise was paid for.
Because of that it must be treated with some respect.
Marvel has no such issues with their own properties.
10:50 She did in the Dark Horse books.
Thanks for a really well informed overview of Conan's first year back at Marvel. I agree with your observations - a bit of a mixed bag so far. Looking forward to your follow up.

Good video Andrej, and Midnights Edge
I love Conan as well and I pre-ordered the Mezco one:12 Conan action figure!
Great stuff, love these types of videos!
You don't have to guess about sales Andre, just go to Comichron online
In English, the "th" in the name Thomas is pronounced with a hard t. Does Roy Thomas have it pronounced differently?
Come on, Ahnold!
Forget the backlash for "Dark Fate'; you've still got one more good Conan movie in you yet, and we fans want to see it!!! ^_^
I read only the first volume of Life and Death and 2019 Savage Sword but eventually dropped them as compared to the Dark Horse reprints and the 70's 80's magazine they felt very weak... seems that so far only "old" material is appealing to me.
man , you got the name of Esad Ribic right! noice one, our eastern european names are kinda hard :D
I do try.
It would have been cool if they had made the Belit story in Age of Conan in a way that it could fit with her run in the comics in the 70s. Even tough REH created the character comic book Belit is more fleshed out and I would love to know more about her before she met Conan.
Looks like you made some sales in the form of this Conan fan. I've never owned Conan, but I will head to my local comic shop tomorrow.
I have been a conan fan for 40 plus years have all the SS mags I sold my first 24 issues of The Barbarian and I regret it now but I have to say I agree with all your points and I even look forward to the Savage Avengers every month it is a fun read, but I always will want Conan The Barbarian in the age of Conan not in the present and hopefully we can get a movie or a show rated R of coarse or there's no reason for it
great video, please do one about conan's dark horse run
Must admit I’ve disliked all the crossover comics, only interested in Conan in Hyborea, hope savage sword makes a comeback but will continue with Conan the Barbarian
Same here
Bryan Malpas : I started buying Conan the Barbarian and Savage Sword (SSOC) again in 2019...the comics shop in my town also has back issues of SSOC ( the magazine size issues from the 1970's-90's).
Did not know about Thor/Punisher/Logan and Conan, will definitely check that out. Your video is, as always, first rate. Hail André!
Is therr any news on the King Conan movie?
I freaked out when I saw Conan 2099. I've been working on a spinoff comic of Conan set in the far future for roughly 5 years which you can find on my channel or social media, (Focusing on different characters of course.) Interested to see where things go with the property.
Did/do you play any of the video games? Age of Conan or Conan Exiles?
That would be a interesting idea.
It was supposed to be made by Amazon, but got cancelled
Good review, thank you
Great review. Any thoughts on the backup fiction features?
Not yet - will read them all once #CtB is out, may do a separate review then.
