Well it's not just him, research as a whole does. the idea that males in social groups are at this constant agressive battle for the top spot is just not something that is found in all animals, sure gorilla's have a semi violent group dynamic, but in chimps for example the most succesfull male is not the most agressive or physically impossing ape but one that spends allot of time on other gentle social interactions, such as grooming. Turns out nature isn't that easily forced into neat little boxes :)

I’d say it really depends on the culture of the society the alpha is in. I live in an upper class white neighborhood, and the alpha at my school is the most well-rounded. They are great in sports, are very involved in clubs and do well in school.
This may not be the case in an area that discourage education. Overall, the main consistency is confidence, but likability isn’t always a factor.

My group has 2 alphas, the leader and the back. The leader is the face and the senior member where as the back door alpha hangs near the back of our pack and makes sure everyone is ok and makes sure no one is alone in potentially dangerous situations like that one time we (from a small town) where hanging in a big city, one of the females decided to get fast food (alone because she didn't want to wake everyone up) but something happened that made her wait for 4 hours until they got the food and the back door stayed with her the entire time because this city is especially dangerous for a 100 pound female (the city is a major stop point for human trafficking)
