Saw Groundhogs several times in the 70's then again a few years ago in the Eel Pie Club in London, after Tony McPhee had taught himself to sing & play again after a stroke, with his wife on support vocal the band were excellent. I got a photo with Tony, who is a lovely man & very under-rated as a guitarist.
My brother saw them in '71, it was the week before they appeared on TOTP! I had to wait another 37 years, but did catch them/him on a package tour - with Focus and Wishbone. He struck me as the most creative and charismatic lead player I've ever seen live. His solos were strange and unique, but mesmerising. He also had the most empathetic drummer one could wish for [I don't know if it's this guy].
I just wished I could have seen Tony McPhee in New Zealand Geography and popularity are to frustrating factors If he had come out to Christchurch 1975 along with Rory Gallagher Rory blew us all away I'm sure this man would have too
great song great band. Met tony at a gig in the 70's and told him I thought it was a disgrace that he wasn't a major star. He just kinda shrugged……………..live long and prosper tony
Said the same thing to him myself at the bar before a gig in the 80's, as you say, he just shrugged and he said 'It's just this fucking business'. A great guy and very down-to-earth.
Saw them around 70 at the Round House, London, with the original trio lineup. OMG, they were loud! My ears rang for several days afterwards. But Tony was brilliant 😂😂😂😂😂
Saw Tony Mcphees Groundhogs twice in I think around 2004 , brilliant especially the first time and then he had his stroke but Ive seen Ken Pultiniks Groundhogs and they are just as good , if not better as the lead singer has a much better voice !

It's a shame there are no surviving, live videos of the classic lineup, with Pustelnik and Cruikshank, in their heyday from '69-'72.
