Mum told me how she went to see the film in early 1940 and saw this young actress Judy Garland who was only sixteen years old, not much older than my mum (who was 13 when she saw the film). Told me about Dorothy and her little dog Toto and the adventure that they had. Britain was at war by then and in August 1940 when mum turned 14 she went to work in a munitions factory just north of London. The film and particularly the song Somewhere Over The Rainbow gave mum some joy in what must have been a very worrying and frightening time. My mum died in January 2020 and she was 93 years old. As I helped carry her in to the service of remembrance we walked with Judy Garland singing her famous song. I think mum would have liked that and made her smile...and I like to think she's singing along to it now.

They really did Ethel /Judy wrong in Hollywood!! Her life was tragic imagine knowing you were unwanted, and then mistreated by your parents and the industry!! RIP love 💔❤ Judy!!
The way Judy Garland sings this song both technically and artistically here (at just 16 years old) is the most perfect version of the song that was ever done. I doubt even the songwriters of this song had ever conceived it to be vocalized in such a stunning manner. No one can duplicate this ... (not even Judy in later years) ... it is total perfection.
lmao. "most perfect version", You mean, SINCE HER version is the most famous (and probably the one you & other have heard FIRST), then it becomes the "standard", and any other stylistic departures from THAT are deemed "less perfect.". ... You remind me of these people who automatically assume that (in life) that the side who told you their version of historical facts FIRST (before their competitor could get to you ) is the correct/truthful side. Your comment reminds me of what a world of fools this is.
its important to remember when audiences witnessed this for the first time the nation was in the last throes of the great depression. A depression that had gone on for 10 years and hollowed and caved out the nations hopes & dreams to a depth no one saw coming. she was basically singing for the nation here. its why it resonated so deeply with people aside from just being a great scene w/ an extraordinary talent delivering the song.
Well observed. Fortunately, I have a first edition copy of the original work by L. Frank Baum. Great book. The movie departed from it's story line quite a bit, but the film captured the hearts of millions and continued to do so for decades after it's release. Which, BTW, was just before the outbreak of WWII IN "39". Many believed, and many still do, that the story was allegorical for.......(?). There have been many hypotheses. Baum insisted that it was not. No matter. I still stop to watch this picture whenever it airs. Saw it as a boy in the 60s and loved it. Still do.
@Ellison Hamilton I don't think that the crackpot analyses of the story really started in Baum's time, especially since he was such a prolific author, not only of books, but of essays, articles, and plays. If he'd wanted to say something political, he wouldn't hide it in a children's story, he'd be explicit and say what he meant to say with no varnish. He was a very outspoken man, and he realized that there was a place for everything and that everything should be in its place.
Makes me so mad how they exploited and abused this girl. She was basically a slave. They fed her drugs to make her perform. I was very rebellious at that age and I would have been hell on wheels for them. They probably would have fired me and hired someone more docile. Poor Judy though. Her short life was nothing short of hell.
Amanda, you are right. The last few years of her life she was rightfully angry about her childhood being stolen from her in order to please and make money for the adults all around her who should have been watching out for her and protecting her. It is really hard to believe that MGM didn't recognize the enormity of her talent. I believe that had she been treated with love and respect during her formative years, (from her mother and bosses) she could have dodged the amphetamines and barbiturates which damaged her and finally destroyed her. What a tragedy; talent like hers is as rare as perfect diamonds.
My grandfather and I would sing this together. He rescued me from an abusive household twice and protected me as best as he could. Sadly we lost him to cancer. This song just brings back memories of him
Judy Garland's singing ability at age 16 was incredible for someone so young. Her phrasing, dynamics and expression were incomparable. She was one in a million.
It's astounding to think that this song was almost not included in the film. It was cut during previews of The Wizard of Oz in June 1939 because Louis B. Mayer, the studio chief and the directors felt it was too long and too slow and that no one would want to hear a girl sing a slow ballad in a farm yard. How wrong they were.
I can’t even imagine how the film would be without this timeless classic, it might be slow but it’s certainly not something someone wouldn’t leave their work in the middle to listen to. It’s just so deep and soulful! I tried to sing this song in my Judy Garland Tribute medley, for her 100th birthday! It’s not perfect like the original of course, but it would mean a lot if you saw it!😇
Actually .... it's not surprising! You have to remember ......... we are at an advantage ..... because we got to enjoy the finished product, and we didn't have to create this film and it's score! Because no one knows the future, decisions can be made that hurt or enhance anything/anyone! The powerful impact of the song, and Dorothy's realism in conveying just what the director(s) hoped for ... saved this song and the beautifully emotive scene, (helped by the ~black & white/sepia~ filming)~!~
Oh yes, dying to this song would be a lovely way to go. I never knew that fact. As my Grammy used to say "You learn something new everyday". Peace & Hope...

I thought this was only my opinion, but now i see it's a concensus. This song is attached to her soul, part of our souls as well, it will never change. Judy still warms up my heart, and forever will.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow is not just Judy's signature song, it's her life story. The song represents the tragedies she endure. The death of her loving father when she was 13, putting up with an abusive and selfish mother, her drug problem, failing marriages, struggling to be a mother to her children that she loved so much, and her fall from grace. Now she is free from her sadness and has flown over the rainbow and into the arms of her father
Same here, except for me it was in the 80's. It's definitely one of those movies and songs I was exposed to which permanently imprinted a tender soft sadness aspect in me as I was growing up. There were a few like this one that did.😪
Judy was 16 in this movie. In this sequence, she has some dialogue and sounds just like a kid. Then she begins to sing and this incredible thing happens. What a talent.
You should hear the radio version of _Wizard_ from 1950! When she speaks as Dorothy, she sounds just like she did in the movie, but her singing was even more full and rich than here, which is saying something!
@@MaskedMan66 It would still be pretty cool. I can imitate a few artists, and I have come somewhat close to it. But alas, I will never be able to get it perfect. It’s one of her films that I really love. But I love “Meet me in St. Louis” as much. When Judy ( possibly at her most beautiful )sings “Have yourself a Merry little Christmas” to Margret O’Brian to me it’s as beautiful a scene as Over the Rainbow”. Judy’s voice could express that feeling of deep longing for that which is now lost to us, and that which can never be attained.
Born in 55 as well. Looked forward every year as a kid to see the movie repeat. Great song. Even Judy later in life couldn't match her 16 year old voice
Everytime Judy Garland is mentioned or if the Wizard of Oz is playing, my mother would often comment on how hard of a life she had and it is sad (and I do agree with her). I am sure she would think Judy Garland would fit well with perpetual dreamer.
She was a seasoned professional when she started on this movie, and proved her worth and her maturity to cast and crew, impressing everybody. Even the acerbic screenwriter Noel Langley, who had very few compliments to give, praised her for her maturity and politeness.
And they abused the hell out of her. I feel really bad for her, because she had giggling fits during the famous slap scene with the cowardly lion and got slapped herself😞
@@SillyCreatureSally She was not abused. Nobody would have wanted to, because everyone loved her; what the heck was there not to love? She got giggle fits all the time, and on those occasions, they just waited for her to get it out of her system. On this one and only occasion that she got slapped, they had to finish a shot before the studio shut down for the evening, and that time was fast approaching. So, as one will do for someone in hysteria (to which a giggle fit is related), Victor Fleming smacked her across the face and told her to get the job done, and she nailed the next take, which is the one used in the film. Afterward-- and of course this is the bit people don't talk about because for some perverse reason they want to make it look like Judy went through hell-- Fleming told John Lee Mahin to break his nose for what he'd done. Overhearing him, Judy walked up to him and said, "I won't break your nose, but I will kiss it." So saying, she did.
Judy Garland was truly blessed with one of the most beautiful voices of all time. So sad / tragic that wonderful performers such as Judy (Marilyn Monroe) die at such young ages. 😢💔
@@MaskedMan66That's the thing. He didn't butcher the lyrics. He made it his own song, changed even the melody. He didn't do a cover, he made a masterpiece.
@Summer Rose MGM was only one studio. The drugs Judy took were actual medicine, and most actors were prescribed them for many movies. Judy wasn't overweight as such, but she was a C-cup, which wouldn't do for the child she was playing, so they took what measures were available-- which included weight control and costuming-- to make her more physically childlike. They had absolutely no intentions of making her an addict (which she did not become until later in life) or an anorexic (which she never was).
@@MaskedMan66 again. Why you're focusing on painting the studio in a positive light when what they were doing was wrong is beyond me. The studio chief called her his little hunchback. All her depression and self esteem problems and ultimately addiction stems from being told as a 13 year old girl she was not pretty or thin enough.
A classic song for all time. There is no movie theme song that could ever hold a candle to Over The Rainbow. The world will never get tired of hearing this song. It will live on forever.
Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue And the dreams that you dare to dream, Really do come true. Someday I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far behind me. Where troubles melt like lemon drops, Way above the chimney tops, That's where you'll find me. Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why then, oh why can't I? Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly Birds fly over the rainbow Why then, oh why can't I? If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow Why, oh why can't I?
Vince (my big brother's name was Vince!), you sir, are by NO MEANS alone~!~ I'm pushing 70, and can't get past the opening of the film! Every time I see her reach for Toto's outstretched paw my eyes water up,, and at the end of her last sung note, reaches out ... and brokenheartedly embraces Toto. I can hardly bare it. God Bless~!~ Sonny.
I grew up in an abusive home. This song pulled me through a lot. I'd sing it to myself all the time, wishing I were somewhere else, over the rainbow. I'm far away from that situation now, but years later as an adult I still get teary-eyed listening to it.

She was just a child with the voice of an angel. I remember the first time I saw this movie and how I loved this beautiful song sung by this amazing young lady. Judy this will always be your song.
Judy Garland’s greatness was evident at an early age. Her voice and style are instantly recognizable. Her sensitivity to the music and lyrics transcends any other interpretation of Over the Rainbow. Judy was truly unique.
She put feeling and emotion into her songs. Just posted elsewhere about the song "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" from "Meet Me In St. Louis"....same intense emotion. It was like she became the character she was portraying. RIP JUDY😔❤
Judy knocked this out of the box. It is hard to appreciate how good it sounds from a movie soundtrack. She was pretty young as well. No one else can sing this song this well. Hard to believe it came from a movie studio.
It must have been around 1970 or so when I saw The Wizard of Oz for the first time (I was around 5 years old) and I remember seeing those flying monkeys and it scared the living hell out of me. I don't know how many times I've watched this movie but Judy Garland's voice was absolutely incredible. I've heard many people sing this song, but I still go back to her version and consider it the best.
About 40 years ago I went to a theatre that had a midnight double special, primarily for young college kidsl: The Wizard of Oz and Freaks. The crowd was young, raucous, filled with drink and other substances. But when this song began, everyone quieted down to listen. Some people sang along softly; a young girl next to me had tears streaming down her cheeks. I've never forgotten that, the power of this song. In my opinion, the high point of film.
Exquisite phrasing, gorgeous tone, every move, every expression brings home the meaning of the words in a heart touching way. Judy Garland was phenomenal. My favorite line of hers: "if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own backyard; because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with." Amen. Let it be so.
Born OTD 100 years ago. JUDY GARLAND was too talented and sensitive for this cold, cruel world. Today we honor her memory and timeless talent by celebrating her many, wonderful gifts she left us and paying tribute to her. HBD JUDY!!

@@gaporion1973 I wouldn't call Mascagni's piece the "original". Yes "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" took some serious inspiration from it, but there is still a great deal of new material, and it wouldn't be right to say that Arlen's work is not original.

One of the most hideous lies that people tell about Judy's time on the movie is the one about her co-stars hating her and being jealous of her. The truth is that they loved her, and how could they not?
I'm 70 and ever since I was a young child I've have never missed "OZ" Loved it then, love it now. Still, this beautiful song as sung only by Judy Garland mesmerizes me. Unbelievable voice, unbelievable talent. I truly believe she sung this song for everyone.
The whole movie is one of those rare instances of just the right people being together at just the right time to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts.
At the time, the producers did not think the song fit in. Although it's hauntingly beautiful, the switch from her speaking like a 12 year old to singing like a grown-up woman *is* a bit jarring. Then again, I didn't mind that when I first saw it.
@@hermanrobak1285 The movie only had one producer, and he fought like heck to keep the song IN the movie! And there's nothing jarring about Judy's performance at all.

its important to remember when audiences witnessed this for the first time the nation was in the last throes of the great depression. This was released 7 days before the advent of WWII!!
Still do.
Very well said!
What a self serving, disrespectful comment about a wondrous talent who left us all a great legacy of love & performance.
u.n. owen And you're an ignorant dum dum. Do some research fool.
Yes. Starting from her OWN MOTHER. She exploited her and allow a lot of the abuse
@@79agp I don't have to, I watch & listen to her performances, which will outlive you.

It’s not perfect like the original of course, but it would mean a lot if you saw it!😇
Wow. They had that wrong. This song made the movie. Sometimes management is wrong
It was never actually cut because Mervyn LeRoy fought like the dickens to keep it in, and he prevailed.

Timeless classic. I love the original version. One of the sweetest melodies of all time.
Who else agrees that Wizard of Oz is Judy's best film?
It’s one of her films that I really love. But I love “Meet me in St. Louis” as much. When Judy ( possibly at her most beautiful )sings “Have yourself a Merry little Christmas” to Margret O’Brian to me it’s as beautiful a scene as Over the Rainbow”. Judy’s voice could express that feeling of deep longing for that which is now lost to us, and that which can never be attained.
I have to give the edge to "Meet Me in St. Louis," but I would agree that this song was her greatest.

@@toastednoodles You mean movies or stars? Or both? ;-)
