Hi ! I recently found your channel and have loved your content. I’m a 37 year old male working as a medical assistant in the US and am contemplating going into nursing school but I also wonder about medical school. What made you decide on nursing over medical school given your research background ? Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me 😊
Hello Mario, for me the decision was based on my age and where I was in life. It is very difficult to get into med school in Canada as we have only 8 med schools across the whole country and very few seats each year. It is one of the most competitive admissions in the world in Canada. Furthermore, I needed to do some prerequisite courses in physics, calculus (as u didbt have enough of them in my biomedical degrees). So I would be in school doing pre-med courses for a year, then take the MCAT, apply for a year, give the ethics exam, do interviews - even then most people in Canada don't get in on the first try. My friends in Canada have done it and gotten in after 2-3 attempts. Very very competitive process. At age 26 I did not want to invest 2-4 years more of my life without a guarantee of a good paying stable career at the end of it. On the other hand, doing 4 years of nursing school opened up hundreds if opportunities for me and a good paying career with the opportunity of become a nurse practitioner and practising independently if i want to in the long run. That was my reasoning why I did not apply to medical school. Furthermore, nursing was less costly, more hands-on. Medicine in north American as physicians is more diagnostic focused and less patient care focused, so I do enjoy the nursing side of it. Plus, I have been able to combine my research and nursing degree to work in the clinical trials industry for higher pay. I plan to do consulting for health tech companies as well.
@@thebrownfeministcanada thank you so much for your advice. I have done lots of research on both career paths and I have found good things and bad things on each. In the end I just want a career where I can help the sick and feel fulfilled. I feel that nursing would be the better choice for me but I still debate on medical school. I think I just need to decide on following one path and just continue with it. I feel very happy as a medical assistant and I’m sure I’ll enjoy nursing to, thank you 🙏
