The Hockey Guy's good friend, who shall remain nameless...
major respect for his love of the game. i'm a wings fan since 93. one of the greatest things i have noticed about hockey is how us americans/canadians can embrace and love players/people from other countries. these ambassadors of the world come into our homes and we embrace them. we adopt them through and through. swedes, russians, chechs, fins, germans, slovaks...they become a staple to our family.
in no other way would this be possible.
the big blue marble is so much more connected than we typically consider. in our entire lives we may never meet someone from another country in more than passing, but the love for someone to put on our favorite colors, grow with our favorite team, does amazing things for our society.
being a wings fan, i felt the tragedy of Konstantinov, the pure Michigan adoption of Yzerman, the amazement of Datsyuk, and the perfect human...a swede named Lidstrom. to giggle at the awe of the russian 5, the insurgence of swedes, working on pronunciation of a finnish name to not sound like a dork, learning the lifestyle of a slovak as they hoped to one day come here for glory.
I screamed to the sky when yzerman hit the double overtime winner, i threw the remote when when we lost the 09 final. i grit my teeth in anger when draper hit the boards, and reveled in the redemption as mccarty set it square. i lost my breath when fisher's heart stopped against nashville, and when cleary lost his chicklets to a puck. the happy dance when someone got kronwalled or when dino made a goalie go crazy.
all this from a simple sport. a game. a passion.
we all know what happens on the ice does not change our lives one bit. but it calls us. it connects us. it gives us something to hope for. a lifelong action adventure to follow as the story unfolds.

As a Redwings fan, I know the pain, after knowing the glory. Hang in there Canuck fans. Pettersson is a nice gem to have.
