Stef G, I began with the main color for the brim. The contrast colors were casted on as I needed them. Near the end of this video I briefly explain casting a new color.
I was thinking of using a needle selector for an 8 stitch repeat on my mid-gauge knitting machine to make this hat. Was wondering if you thought that this would work for a machine knitter?
Elizabeth Riepenhoff, I didn’t bother with this pattern because the floats are a normal length. When wearing Fair Isle you should always be mindful of the floats and not wear pins or barrettes in your hair. Long hair could get caught in a float. Wedding rings could get caught inside a Fair Isle mitten. My next Fair Isle project will likely be Christmas Stockings, something decorative that no one will be wearing. I recently saw a wonderful Fair Isle tube scarf with the floats safely hidden inside, what a great idea!
Beautiful hat & pattern! Thank you for sharing 😊🧶
Love it! A video of a tartan plaid type panel using this technique would be great. Would that be possible?
How do you even start fair isle? Do you cast on all the colours at once? Or just one colour then add in the rest later? I'm so lost...

Gorgeous! Love colors! Did you ever make mittens to match the hat?
Where can you find that loom you got in that video on RUclips?
I believe that is a CinDwood.com loom. Possibly the 1/2”?
Where is the video to correct the jog? The terminology for the last paragraph confuses me. Duplicate stitch? What does that mean?
How do you trap the floats when loom knitting? I'm new to fair isle and have been having this issue. Thank you!

You could also consider lining the hat with fabric, like fleece or cotton. It would give the hat a more finished look, plus it would cover the floats.
What gauge and peg count is your loom?
Veola Sutherland ... it’s a CinDWood 1/4” gauge, 120 peg loom. Perfect for worsted Fair Isle
