    There’s an even more spectacular 2 Day Tongariro Alpine Crossing from Waihohonu, including Mt Tongariro - it's less crowded and offers a unique overview of the Tongariro National Park. Worth considering if you want more time in this thrilling part of New Zealand. Also means you have a 2 day weather window to bag some stellar views. Beware, it - could start a life-long hiking obession, lol😀. Happy & safe hiking☺.

    I remember doing this a few years- i was almost comatosed at the end of the hike lol also, we went in a group and at one stage the instructor had to hold my hand walking on top of the loose sand. And i will never forget the devils staircase. I thought i was reasonably fit until i did this hike. You are so brave! (And fit obvi)

    There were so many people when we went lol. We did Mt Doom and it was so hard with the loose rocks. I wouldn't have done it but Mark forced me lol. It took us 10hrs to finish and the end was torture - those damn stairs lol

    Something to correct : you CANNOT park your private car for more than 4 hours, so you can't take it and hike the whole trail. Just take a shuttle. They are cheap and very well organized. And they take your name and will not abandon you (or so they say :-) ) But if you don't want to do the whole trail, then just hike the first few miles until you arrive to the first climb. It's gorgeous (if not as spectacular of course) and you will get back to your car on time. Don't skip the water fall just before the climb.

    When we did it, it got nasty, 24hrs in a snow storm because we came across 3 people who had no idea about NZ weather, luckily we did. Dug in with a tarp and had a radio so we could keep in contact with rescue service, to all oversea tourist this is not Europe with thousands of tourist.

    Tongariro Te maunga
    Taupō Te moana
    Te Heuheu te Tangata
    Ngāti Tuwharetoa te Iwi
    When you walk our lands never forget your footsteps fall upon the pathways first traversed by the ancestors of the Tangata whenua
    You're challenge is to deepen your experience by researching the indigenous world you are walking in ... Forget The Lord of the Rings - the indigenous stories would blow your mind in ways JRR Tolkien couldn't even imagine

    Hey Mari! Have long is this hike (km)?

    • @princesswearshikingboots4479
      @princesswearshikingboots4479 6 лет назад

      Hi DreamJulie. It's 19.4km (12 miles). You should allow 7 - 8 hours with reasonable fitness. There’s an even more spectacular 2 Day Tongariro Alpine Crossing from Waihohonu, including Mt Tongariro - it's less crowded and offers a unique overview of the Tongariro National Park. Worth considering if you want more time in this thrilling part of New Zealand. Also means you have a 2 day weather window and you can pace your fitness. Great boots and hiking poles will add confidence and make it much easier. Hope you go, you'll love it - could start a life-long hiking obession, lol😀. Happy & safe hiking☺.

    I have lived 30 minutes from these mountains for the past 25 years and I have never done this walk. This is my tribe (Ngati Tuwharetoa) sacred mountain and where we use to bury our chiefs. Mount Doom is also Mount Ngauruhoe ( Mount Nah - ew - rou - hoe - e).
