My New Favorite Drum Fill - Drum Lesson

- I think it's the simplicity of the pattern and the complexity of the sound that makes this my new favorite drum fill. Simple ideas played with intention and care generally add up to an advanced/pro sound. Enjoy - Mike J 🙏🍵🙏🍵

This fill + the Bossa Nova = chewing tinfoil
Nah man, I actually liked it, because it might fit in a math-rock/fusion setting, given the right context.
Hey Mike I discovered you from a video from someone else actually if you remember there was a guy from the Philippines showed up in your studio he said that they will have biking near your place.. His name is Raymund Marasigan fun fact that guy is the drummer of the band called Eraserheads.. They are being labeled as the beatles of the Philippines.. And they are like the Nirvana of the 90s in Manila like how they revolutionize and introduced alternative filipino rock..
"The lesson is to allow the groove dictate the fill" 🙏🙏
Always dropping the serious wisdom nuggets!!
Love your work, Mike
Candy for the kids! Just a little minty goodness!
Guy literally has the best audio, the best video, amazing education. Truly incredible content, most people don’t understand how difficult it is to do this level of production on your own
No online drum coach I've ever seen has the talent to break down cool percussion language into easily discernable 'words' like you do--delivered with outrageously humble exuberance.
Groove nuggets. Perc Parts. Tom Tom Tidbits. Snare snippets. Fun-size candy chops. Love them all!
Man, you sure know how to hype a guy up. Can I hire you? lol. Seriously though, thanks so much!!!
Great lesson! Those dynamics will give me inspiration for years to come 🙏
Well I know what I am practicing tomorrow!
This is the stuff I need Mike so immersive best teacher out there
Coming from a fellow teacher, you are a really good teacher. As always, nicely done.
Amazing fill. I really enjoyed displacing this one. Starting on the 2, 3 etc. then adding something to the end :)
Very cool fill lesson! Always love a fill with double kicks, makes me sound like a pro 😂
The new angles , cinematography, all of it , looks amazing, I know how much work that takes , great job Mike thank you
You just made my day Nick 🙏🍵🙏🍵
I love these kind of triplets with the odd feel. I use it as a last section ( count of 7) of a fill in a prog metal 7/8 groove as a 16th note triplet (RlkkrL)
Great video Mike! And yeah, you're absolutely right - the secret sauce doesn't get talked about enough. It might be easy enough to over look it, but doesn't mean we should take that aspect for granted!
Keep up the great work!
Good lesson. It was cool that I was actually there when Buddy got delivered.
This is a really really sick lesson. Thank you
My favorite drum fill is the one that best serves the song and the artist I'm working for at the time 😮
You already know I love your videos ;) Yeah that's it, nothing to add... :) Literally counting days till 7th July. Can't wait!!!!!
So good as always! Since you brought Buddy into the video, I have to ask, as I’m sure many have, WHERE DID YOU GET THAT ARTWORK?! Thanks!
nice stuff buddy - have camp in 6 months. need to get to work on 1/16th note triplet fills !!!
Mmm special 😊
Sick Mike best fill I love from you they’re all good but this my favorite
Tried this out yesterday, and it’s gonna take some work to nail down the accents - much less work it into a groove. But, I look forward to it.
I need a foot like this!
🤘🥁
Gracias ! ! !
This is crazy. I just now searched your channel name, and it says uploaded 4 seconds ago. 😂
It’s fate! lol. I hope you enjoyed the lesson my friend 🙏🍵🙏🍵
Been doing this for years as an excise, placing the left foot hi-hat chick on the beat makes it very challenging.
Mike 100% right..we learn tons of fills...but they don't fit just any groove..😊
Love it, I’ve always had trouble with the Kick Kick part when it comes to speeding it up, do you have any videos that can help with that?
I tried this and that was my problem too
Trust me it takes time but all you gotta do is be patient and keep practicing
00:37 New camera angle, squeezes in the overhead mic for the win.
Your throne looks sleek man! Is it a Roc n Soc?
The bossa thing could work if you turn the snares off and orchestrate it slightly different
Hi Mike I don’t know where I should ask this hope it’s ok how do I get groove freedom I have iPhone 13
To make the counting easier , just count each group of 16th triplets as you would 6/8, andjust move the accents to where they will fall in groups of four
nice. can we finally have the dimension of this Gretsch Broadkaster kit? 18x14 12/14 or 20x14 12/14 toms? thanks
Sure: Gretsch Broadkaster - Kick 20X14, Rack 12X8, Floor 14X14. Snare - Gretsch Brooklyn Standard 14X5.5. Hope that helps :)
First LMAO! What up MJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love me some triplets!
Great flow Mike - ? - jazz pianist and drummer here - need a practice kit bebop setup - silent heads or Tama practice pads Justin Scott is using - any ideas - great pocket and playing
Much appreciated. At home I have a bop kit with Aquarian Super Pads. It’s the most realistic thing I’ve found and when I get to my kit at the studio there’s no adjustment period.
Thanks so much for the fast response - have a home in NYC (recently at Emmets Place in Harlem) Emmet Cohen - now down in Naples for winter so picked up a 5’ Yamaha GB1 small grand - now need the drums - will check them out and your site - thanks again
One of the biggest takeaways from this video is the fact that a tasty fill or cool chop might “fit” inside a groove without actually fitting with the “feel” of the groove. Musicality over chops every day.
FYI, I will be stealing "shucking and jiving while deep-sea diving."
Thank you.
LOL! I think you're the only person who heard it, so it;s all yours :)
Immagina se fai un fill del genere prima di un ritornello.....il cantante della band ti manda a quel paese in 2 secondi. Vogliamo continuare a suonare per noi stessi o essere al servizio della musica ????
