My mom has an African grey named Charlie and only she could take him out. He is 16 but I've always wanted to be able to pick him up, I have spent 2 years trying to get him to step up without biting and last week finally accomplished it! He is a much happier bird now that he gets out more!
my grey is obsessed with our kitchen counter. if she flies, i always know to look for her there. i can catch her a million times and reroute her, but it's always right back to kitchen counter after i place her down 😂 she just loves it. no idea why. she came to us at 17 unable to fly and now loves to do her route through the house to the counter.
If you don't mind me asking, how did you teach her to fly? My 42 year old umbrella cockie has literally never flown in her entire life but I would like to teach her. I just don't know how.
Capree grew up with birds so she is absolutely uninhibited by any former misconceptions - and she obviously inherited both of your knack for understanding these precious creatures. So sweet to watch her grow up through your videos. ❤
African Greys are so beautiful! Well all parrots are. Have you ever had to train a cockatoo before? I’m sure you have. From just watching videos of them I swear they have a few screws loose 😂. One lady who was fostering one and then decided to adopt because she fell in love with her, her cockatoo learned how to bark like a dog just from listening to the owners dog doing it. I don’t think I’ve laughed so hard in my life. She sounds just like the dog too, and when someone knocked or rang the doorbell she would jump down from wherever she was and go running and barking to the door. She can’t fly at all so she just runs everywhere. Also she plucks her feathers out so badly that the owner had to start making these sort of like bibs that goes over her head that helps to keep her from getting to her feathers to pluck them out. Have you ever had to deal with a bird that stress plucked their feathers?
🦜He’s so handsome. I’m a vet asst. FYI. You should try an all aluminum cage, because galvanized steel like yours, can get a white rusty powder, in between the cage rungs and bars, and that causes heavy metal poisoning in tropical birds. Some bells, and metallic paint on bird toys can cause it, too. Some other things to watch out for: Teflon coated cooking pans, when cooking food at high heat, causes fumes which is dangerous to birds, keep their quarters out of the kitchen. Also any chemicals, like nail polish, polish remover, glass cleaner. Spores in the air, or in bird food. They’re very sensitive. Really sweet bird! 💕
I noticed he really loved to look at your family pictures. From what I understand they are not as cuddly as a cockatoo but they are highly intelligent and I am loving the interaction he is showing, it's very positive. You are brave giving him so much freedom. I am just thinking out loud, but birds can be very destructive and chew a lot of your walls and door or window trims. I love that you are giving him such healthy foods to help him learn to eat more natural foods, plant foods and nuts and things. You are doing a great job. I think it will be hard for you to let him go when you do! He is precious! I love how empathic your daughter is, she is definitely just like you.
I. LOVE Capri……what a little cutie….and he loves her to scratch him. You can see he has no fear of her for getting what he likes. I have an African Grey…..they’re so determined to be a one person bird!……..my bird lives with me and my daughter and her family. So, he sees them all the time…..but only if there’s no other way and I’m not around, will he step up to go back to familiar territory, or let one of them take him to his cage. Absolutely NO WAY will he allow anyone else to scratch him, so I’m really impressed with how fast he trusted Capri to scratch him!!
I’ve learned so much from watching your series of videos, especially how to be patient with my own rescues. My little parrotlet, for instance, who I worked so hard to train to step up, learned to do that in a month. But it took him 6 months to finally go into his own cage on his own. Which he did today. I was so happy for him. He flew to his cage and went down into the door and put himself inside. My budgie has been doing this since I got him. But for my parrotlet this is the first time I’ve ever seen him do this, so this is huge. It means he sees his cage as a home, a safe place, and knows it’s his own space that he feels comfortable in, which makes me so happy. And I think he also watched the budgies put themselves into their cage, and modeled their behavior, which is kind of adorable. Birds really are mimics. Another thing I recently discovered is a good way to get birds to eat their veggies or their pellets is to have them all eat these things at the same time. Because they’ll see their flock eating them and they’ll get excited and try to get them. Suddenly they have to have them. The other day they practically fought eachother for a bowl of pellets! (Don’t worry, I don’t let them fight eachother.)
What a great video I learn so much every time especially the subtle things you teach about birds. It’s incredible to see how Capri has learned from you and Bean herself. What sweet souls. Thank you!
Really great episode both Bean and your daughter are learning and that was what kept me interested and watching. You have many totally cool videos. I have been a fan for years. Love the channel. :) Tod in Vegas
He is super cute. I know he will do good for you as you sure speak their language and your love for these birds wins everytime. And how you treat each as an individual situation.
What a difference. My Grey still won’t come out of the cage. She came out once but that was scary for her. She spent 23 yrs in a 2’x2’x30” cage on one perch, no chew materials or toys. She ate KAYTEE parrot food the whole time. Amazingly her labs came back great. The nurse raved about the results. I don’t think I took her until 2 months after I got her in which time I changed her diet. I was told she never really bit anyone that entire time. She loves her new mansion (cage). She is a huge chewer and I try to keep plenty of wood on hand. I don’t try to force her to step up as I saw her interacting with her ex owner when he did. Amazingly she never bit him. Her feathers are no longer brittle, rough and frayed. She has quit plucking and her feathers are growing in nicely. So far I’ve only seen one or two small red feathers grow back. I can pet her. I can reach in her cage and change out toys. As a rule she’s not aggressive unless she’s upset about something. Usually it’s when I have my Conure out and on me. She’s so jealous. Also if I’ve put a toy in her cage she doesn’t like she pitches a fit until I remove. It. She’s so funny. When I have new toys I’ll hold each one up separately and let her choose. I either get a head shake or a head bob. If I put in a toy with the head shake that’s when she’ll get upset.
Cute bird, but your daughter is adorable. I wish my granddaughter stopped at your daughter’s age. They’re awesome at that age. Thanks for showing us Bean’s progress. Met one bird who people said was mean, but he took to me really quickly. One of the best compliments of my life, and it was from a bird.😀
My African gray would make this body language when I would put her down on a perch near something that she didn’t want to be near, so maybe Bean didn’t like something that was near the perch behind him, it could be as simple as a wallpaper running on the computer screen, which scares my bird for some reason. (Irrational fear) Or maybe something else on the table. It’s just enough to make them uncomfortable to start showing signs that they want to get away. The only difference here is he wouldn’t except help to get away either. Which was very funky. Thank you for always posting these videos
Love watching development with bean. I had a Grey much like the same situation you had. Gordy was in bad shape. I feather plucker. I was his third owner. The second owner was a heavy smoker. I had hoped that was the root of the feather plucking. No such luck. Had to give him up when I had medical problems and moved to Mexico. I use to raise cockatiels so I know what I'm doing. You will find that birds love to eat dandelions. But make sure they haven't been treated with herbicide. They will eat everything from the root to the blossom. Love watching your progress. When I first got Gordy he bit me so bad he drew blood. But I didn't let him know that it hurt. I didn't want him to use it as protection whenever he felt the need 😃
Hope you guys are doing well! What you do with birds is very special as a family teaching your child to appreciate animals and see them as not just animals is a gift. Me and my husband are dealing with my family my mom thinks birds are filthy. I think birds are us filthy as humans humans are more disgusting in my opinion. She doesn't understand that we know if you leave your animals and s*** they will feel like s*** and we understand that more than most. I myself was adopted from an orphanage where I slept in my own s*** so I don't understand how she doesn't see why I care. Any thoughts ??I know this is a lot and rather jumbled probably
She always told me she never let me have a pet in the house but one day I got up bearded dragon and he's incredibly healthy and kind I had him since he was a baby. Mom fell head over heels and I know for a fact she'll fall head over heels for corky I really hope you read this
Cork is a bird has been severely neglected and deliberately abused in my opinion I've seen it firsthand I know what they've gone through because I've watched. This bird has been in my husband's family for a good amount of years but not given the same amount of respect or love as the bird who's been in their family since birth, my husband's sister would deliberately be angry with me because corky would run away from her and go to me a bonded with me to the point where he's learning new words for me. He is now plucking out his feathers and everything, my family doesn't realize that a bird sanctuary would probably put him down because they can't stand on his feet or being purchased is very disabled but very sweet very capable and I know for a fact terrace and I can give him physical therapy give him a proper diet. How would you recommend talking to my mom and more calming ways
Bean got very lucky to have found you. I’ve got two zebra finches and 12 chickens. The chickens will live about 10 years and the finch about 3 years. Bean will live 100 years. It’s amazing how long they can live. My x had a Patagonian conure and was just a mean and horrible bird person. The finch I call Randy and Diesel, the chickens I haven’t named yet. 6 Austrolopes and 6 Orpingtons. I’m been getting eggs since Late November. I’m canning the eggs. Different pickling recipes. Beet and Asian, classic and spiced. They talk famine, I buy chickens.
We also have an African grey, he lets scratch his head, and even sometimes we can take him in hands, but very often he suddenly bites, though nothing dangerous or unusual happens at the moment🤷🏼♀️ None of us can absolutely trust each other and it’s sad☹️ We love our African grey and never hurt or offend him, actually don’t understand why he doesn’t trust us… He’s been living with us for already 21 years.
@wonderwend1 that's not always true. My cockatiel will bite me if he sees something he classes as a danger. Its his way of warning me. He does it alongside his warning call. Its not always because the owner is doing something wrong.
Had my gray for almost 2 years now and she won’t step up, she will bite when I try but she will want me to scratch her head but she doesn’t let you long and she will stop and nibble on my hand and if I go too long she will bite. I wish she would step up :(. She’s almost 5
oh my gosh i could really use your help my dad got me a grey from a previous owner when i was young and as a kid i hung out with him but was not experienced my dad was however he ended up neglecting him and i started taking care of him shortly after we got him but he’s just very hard to make progress with and i’ve tried multiple different things but have not had much luck however he comes out and allows me to hold him and other things and what not
How do you tame them so quick, I’ve been trying for few months with my 2 Fischer lovebirds and they get scared when I get close to them apart from when I feed them millet, once treat has gone they go back to being scared
I follow another parrot whose parents put plastic tings on the counter which he loves to throw on the floor. He also has a drawer that is his and he likes to empty it. I love his cage less existence
Bean sure loves when Capri gives him head scritches. I would like to hear your thoughts on sometime though. A little set up: I have a 42 year old U2 named Pebbles. I am her second human and her first home was a good home but they got to be older and not able to give Pebbles the time she needed. She spent most of the last ten years in a 10 X 14 room by herself with her only human contact being when she was fed. She has her cage and perch in the room and a couple rudimentary toys but that's it. Not an abusive situation but far from what I would consider ideal. Luckily they are an ex's parents so I've known (and been Pebbles human choice) for 12 years before she moved in with me. She is a man's bird and usually won't tolerate a woman touching or even feeding her. My daughter (12) can pet her every once in a very great while but Pebbles usually tells her no. My son (8) is a whole 'notha story. Pebbles loves my son and wants to be around him any time he is in the same room. She doesn't get upset if she can't be or anything. But she does want it. Pebbles has known both kids since their births. On to my query. I notice you involve Capri a lot and that's great in my opinion. But do you ever worry the birds will bite her? And if one did bite her, what would you do? I'm pretty certain Pebbles would never bite my son unprovoked but there is always that little niggle at the back of my brain that says, "what if?"
This is very similar to the play stand techniques I used when taming parrots in my home. As well as raising babies and having a "home base" for our birds when out. At 11:10 I think he was being distracted by the TV?
Yes, this is my Seasonal Feeding System recipe that is included in our cookbooks. There is also a little boiled egg mixed in to help with his diet conversion. birdtricksstore.com/collections/health-and-diet/products/natural-feeding-system-digital-download
How is the excrement from them? Do they poop and pee all over the house or is it mostly contained under the stand where they spend lots of time? Do they learn to go in one place? Do you have to wash or clean them in those areas?

Hi
Well done!
Awww so cute!! Also well done!!!
2 years sounds about right
Thanks for all the nice comments!
That tender bond between Capri and Bean is so sweet and precious. She is amazing with him. ✨
She's becoming so good at reading birds it's green She's so sweet with them

mine loves the kitchen sink as well. And no, they do not want to bathe, but get me to pick them up fro there lol

Bean really loves his head scratches. He actually bends his head towards the hand that will feed his need for connection.
Capree grew up with birds so she is absolutely uninhibited by any former misconceptions - and she obviously inherited both of your knack for understanding these precious creatures.
So sweet to watch her grow up through your videos. ❤
Good thing the birds found nice people that know what they need, keep up the good work.
Bean is so adorable. So is Capri. 🥰
He's such an affectionate bird. Great to see bean be more confident.
He’s so sweet and cute 🥰
He getting better and Capri is so sweet to him he wants so many pets
If I ever have a little girl I sure hope she's anything like Capri! What a wonderful child!
Aaaaaaw, it is sooo lovely to see him let go of his anxiety and accepting (lots of) pets from Capri❣️ 👏👏👏👍🙌💚🦜👧💚👏👏👏
Oh my goodness, your daughter is so wonderful!!! Go Capri!!!!!! And Bean is super adorable too. The two of them together is just so sweet.
Idk what it is about his eyes but when he looks up at you his eyes are heart melting 😍 such a beautiful boy!
So precious that he's so excited about his new food regime. And so affectionate wanting head scratches off you already♥️♥️.

So cute when he offers his neck for capri to pet! I bet he will step up for her in no time!
Bean is starting to trust you yay I have always wish for a grey you are lucky
Your Lil girl works so well with them. Very intelligent for her age.
Bean is so adorable and your doing a great job. You love them them like there your child.
I know this was a year ago but your daughter is very intuitive for her age! Very sweet!❤
Awwwmagawwd, Capri 💗💗💗 she's so incredible and Jamie you are such a wonderful mum xx

I love cage free and so does your bean. Its easy to see you give him what he needs... Love.💘

Love how he puts his head down for you for scratches. So sweet.
Wow what a sweet Bird I love how he bends his head to get scratches that is so cute!!
That little girl deserves a sticker. It might just my cashier coming out, but give her a visual treat!!
Love Capri is helping, both a so cute.
I’ve learned so much from watching your series of videos, especially how to be patient with my own rescues. He is so cute and your little girl is so adorable and smart
It is your voice. Calming and sweet. Very genuine. You are blessed and so are the birdy babies that find you. Your family is beautiful.
Really great episode both Bean and your daughter are learning and that was what kept me interested and watching. You have many totally cool videos. I have been a fan for years. Love the channel. :) Tod in Vegas
Talk about a life-long commitment! Thanks for the rescue.
I like how Capri enjoys working with the project birds too.
Your sweet little one is going to be amazing when grown up with birds
Just beautiful watching your daughter tune into Bean! You're such a patient teacher! Bless you girl! Greetings from Aus
The algorithm rewards OP when people leave comments so I will leave a comment! Nice to see someone doing smart owners happy birdies videos!
man i love bean so happy u uploaded this video
He is super cute. I know he will do good for you as you sure speak their language and your love for these birds wins everytime. And how you treat each as an individual situation.
I would love to adopt him... he's beautiful 😍 very smart n just needed to spread his wings n explore a bit
Bean is doing great for just four days...
I'm planning on getting parrot watching all your videos to research, won't be for years yet but want to be fully prepared for as much as possible❤️
Absolutely sweet. I have twin girls age 7 and we will be getting a baby African grey end of April . I’ll have my girls watch this video too
I dont own birds and probably would not own a parrot, as I already own 2 dogs, but you are really good with these animals.
Oh I have been working with two and they're so different it's crazy but it's so worth it because they're advancing little by little.
Idk what it is but something about his movements and his lil face makes me wanna just give him all my love and affection 🤧 😂😂💜
I have 2 rescues coming tomorrow and I’m looking forward to getting started
Your daughter is such a sweetheart❤
I mean this was a really good video!Bean might just be my favorite!
Bean sure likes his head scratches :D
Loved seeing this older video today. :)
So sweet! I love seeing Capri interact with the birds
I read my military macaw stories. I am 10 years old and I've been reading her Maximum Ride. She is a good bird even if she hates me

Capri gave a great summed up intro!💕
My CAG wants forever pets... My wrist gets tired, too, Capri
“He loves it.” 🥺🥰
Cutest bean on this planet! :D
What a beautiful lad.
I don’t have any birds but I have always loved them, especially an African Grey. I’d be wanting to teach him some things to say.
Who doesn’t love having a neck rub? Lucky boy. So cute.
Wuat beautiful the bird and wuat beautiful video.
This is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not a bird owner, but Bean looks happy & calm, like he is trusting his surroundings.
It was interesting to see how he learned to trust you by making you show him through pets that you're a good human. I love this chanel!

oh my gosh i could really use your help my dad got me a grey from a previous owner when i was young and as a kid i hung out with him but was not experienced my dad was however he ended up neglecting him and i started taking care of him shortly after we got him but he’s just very hard to make progress with and i’ve tried multiple different things but have not had much luck however he comes out and allows me to hold him and other things and what not
You have such sweet kids.

How do you tame them so quick, I’ve been trying for few months with my 2 Fischer lovebirds and they get scared when I get close to them apart from when I feed them millet, once treat has gone they go back to being scared
Try target training, if you haven't already.
Is this a throwback? Wasnt Mr Bean adopted a few months ago?
I was wondering the same thing.
The Bean series was exclusively on Patreon only.
Love your videos
I follow another parrot whose parents put plastic tings on the counter which he loves to throw on the floor. He also has a drawer that is his and he likes to empty it. I love his cage less existence
Bird is like "is that avocado? that stuff is fantastic and no upcharge!"
What mix is that in the bowl when he was on the scale? Is it in your book? I have it so I’m wondering if I too can make it.
Yes, this is my Seasonal Feeding System recipe that is included in our cookbooks. There is also a little boiled egg mixed in to help with his diet conversion.

How is the excrement from them? Do they poop and pee all over the house or is it mostly contained under the stand where they spend lots of time? Do they learn to go in one place? Do you have to wash or clean them in those areas?
My bird grabs the chopstick in one foot and scratches his head and face with it
Thts super cute
