I suppose I can understand the impression of "comedic intentions" or "dumb/stupid/cheesy" if one considers a band creating storytelling music that actually educates its listeners about Darwin and encourages them to contemplate that they owe the profundity of their very existence to an unbroken chain of ancestors to be comedic, stupid, and dumb. If even one link in that chain was broken, YOU would not exist to be sitting here in this very moment to criticize. If one considers the effort of the author to encourage his listeners to contemplate, appreciate, and honor all the "struggles, battles, sadness, happiness, love stories, and hopes for the future that they had to endure" in order for YOU to exist in this very moment to criticize. Yes, if one considers those things comedic/stupid/dumb then I can understand your impressions. If one is too shallow a thinker to recognize the individual metaphors and see how they are weaved into a larger allegory that supports the theme of appreciating how profound is both one's human ancestry and one's Darwinian ancestry... yes, then I can understand your impressions. I blame it on the wasteland that is the corporate profit-driven American music market where true art is trampled in favor of the depraved garbage that most of the so-called "entertainment" industry has become. We Americans (me included) have grown up with and been "trained" to expect nothing more than the ocean of trash in which we are immersed. When we do hear high quality musical compositions, I have noticed two distinct categories of people: one category recognizes that they are hearing something the likes of which they have never heard before and are gobsmacked with amazement and a bit angry that the environment here has sheltered them from this all their lives. The other category knee-jerk rejects and criticizes it in a "superior intelligence" mindset pronouncing judgement because they are thinking too shallow about it and, therefore, do not understand it. Just shake your expectations out of the low bar we've been trained to accept and approach it with a much deeper scrutiny. Look for metaphor. Look for allegory. Look for the deeper picture it is painting. Look for professional poetry instead of the lyrical drivel common in modern American music genres. Be prepared to have to think and ponder about it for days or weeks, in many cases, for the light bulb to go on. Then you will laugh at your own assessment of comedic/dumb/stupid. But for now, it is I who is the one who is dumber for having listened to your reaction. And I hope God will have mercy on my soul.

      No lo creo. 😢

Hello Steve [ In The Pit With Steve ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This music video is the 1st single released in advance from their upcoming studio album Yesterwynde (2024), featuring Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, .and (at the end) Troy Donockley, multi-instrumentalist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "
For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel: www.youtube.com/@gabriel.bardac/community

This is very 'modern' Nightwish. At this point they are a very mature band, creatively and in their actual ages. Its probably best listened to as a pre-existing fan. As one its great for me. If you want to experience the full Nightwish you need to hear them as they were throughout the years, as they have changed a lot, with 3 different, very different, lead singers.

You picked the newest Nightwish song as an introduction...which means you jumped into the deepest possible waters for their material. The video goes with the song very, very well, if you examine it closely.
Nightwish have more live videos than they do "official" music videos. And yes, they're big with festivals like Wacken. Most people, for whatever reason, dip their toes into the band's catalog with "Ghost Love Score", from their 2013 Wacken show.

Hi Steve, thank you for your honest and well observed reaction.
It was a shame that this was your introduction to the band as it might give you bit of a false impression of what they are about. This was one of their more intricate studio songs and it’s live where they really shine. For a more straight forward metal song react to “Romanticide” live from Waken 2013. It’s a real banger but with the symphonic elements that they are known for.
I hope you check out more Nightwish. I know you won’t be disappointed.
    Greetings from the UK 🇬🇧

Hay algunas canciones que alaban el conocimiento personal y espiritual y luego, hay unas 3 o 4 que te devuelven a la Matrix.....😅
Algo contradictorio para los que amamos las letras de este gran grupo.

Gabriel Bardac reacted already and he 's the general of the NW army. If you want to know more about the band you could follow his list or you can go your own way. Whatever, whenever.

Great that you take some time to react to Nightwish, lots of details in this song and with Nightwish they ALL have a meaning and purpose.
    did you notice:
Floor diving into Darwin's "On the Origin of Species"?
    Darwin?
Einstein's bust changing into an ape?
    William Shakespeare?
The guy turning into a tree is Tuomas Holopainen, the mastermind behind Nightwish?
The diver at the end dropping his camera?
There are 3 Free Divers, two of them Finnish, one French: Guillaume Néry 🇫🇷
From his movie "One breath around the World" the Whales scene:
    ruclips.net/video/OnvQggy3Ezw/видео.html
BTW the bikini bottoms as you call it have a purpose: to connect the upper and lower part of the suit, and to fix your hands when diving.
Last: as mentioned in the comments you checked their newest song, so you missed an evolution of more than 25 years Nightwish. Better to start with the Floor era and react to Ghost Love Score Wacken 2013. If you manage to slow down and like it there is material for years to react to...

Another little clever detail which I did not notice at first but was alerted by another astute reactor who picked up on it immediately: The little owl with his head spinning in circles. The theme of the album Yesterwynde, as evidenced by the cover artwork, is about winding back the clock through the centuries to contemplate and appreciate one's ancestral chain. What I missed and did not connect was that the owl's head is spinning counterclockwise (aka anti-clockwise in some countries' terminology). The little character is representing the encouragement to wind back the clock for understanding of what is to come. The winding clock/head accelerates to a dizzying speed to indicate that we are being challenged to wind it back, not just a little bit but by many centuries. And why an owl as opposed to any other mascot? The "wise owl" implication is not to be overlooked. 🙂

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on RUclips. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered RUclips in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Nightwish are not comedic but they enjoy a joke. Some of the silly stuff was just that - having fun. The actual skeletons, birds, etc are the real Darwin exhibits that the museum worked with them to make them come alive.
The swimmer is a deep water Free Diver. They wear that strap to hold things or put hands in when swimming to limit movements so they can hold their breath longer.

Many Nightwish fans were disappointed by the mix on this particular track. I was too, initially. However, there are dozens of Nightwish songs that I think you'd really like, it's unfortunate you chose this one, which takes a few listens to start growing on you. There's also great variety across their catalogue, with unexpected instrumentation so it'd be a shame for you to miss out - Gabriel's list offers many great live, (& well recorded) performances.
If you can't find that, you can't go too far wrong with anything from their Wacken 2013 concert - although Last of the Wilds is an instrumental so you may prefer to sidestep that one for now.
I noticed a few spiky comments, which is out of character for the Nightwish following, the rest of us are happy to hear honest thoughts and for different opinions to co-exist. Hope you give a live version a shot before too long.

I enjoy this video every time as there are always further nuances to be appreciated in the visuals and vocals each time but perhaps too complex for a initial introduction. Although GLS at Wacken 2013 isn't simple it demonstrates what they can do outside the studio.
