Let us not forget that much of the weight in modern cars is safety equipment, the increased size due to pedestrian safety, and crumple zones. Emissions has to be incentivised, so that our towns and cities don't become toxic no go areas.

Thanks for keep taking about both the need for more small EVs and how we encourage people to drive smaller or should that be lighter EVs.
Two things I would like the Government to do is to introduce a subsidy for EVs priced below about 15K and to help establish car share schemes.

I look at the average journey time and how often (and where) I recharge my car to decide what range I need, which is how I ended up with my Peugeot E-208 and a 200+mile range. Only plug it in once a week. Weekend charging at home works perfectly for me, with just the odd top up when I'm in the office. NEVER had to charge it on a public charger (although have been tempted by Tesco's chargers, charging while shopping seems beneficial even to a cheapskate like me)! I learned very early on to get charging down to a couple of percent before getting a charge - Saves a fortune!

    • @PaulMeier-cu3ds
      @PaulMeier-cu3ds 2 месяца назад +1

If you are able to charge at home it is a no brainer, especially if you have access to an off peak tariff or solar or wind renewables. My preference is to keep the car topped up little and often rather than a once a week charge, but then I am paranoid. Topping up at work is also a no brainer if you are not charged for it - I wonder when HMRC will catch up with the benefit in kind. If you live in a city high rise you may not be able to do any of this, and so are exposed to public charging costs. Off peak home charging might cost £0.10kwh while rapid public charging might be £0.70kwh, a seven times difference. So where you live and can charge really counts for EVs.

I was given a 208 as a courtesy car last year and liked it for the 30 or so miles I drove it over country roads and lanes. I really do not know enough about range to have a sensible comment but you could look at the Electrifying review and take 25-35% off the WLTP to get some sort of approximation. Another rough and ready reckoner would be to look at total mileage on the clock to see whether it is likely to have been hammered up and down motorways and fast chargers. With recent depreciation you ought to be able to pick up a low mileage example at a fair price.

I thought that the current name is VED vehicle exercise duty, road fund licience is the term my dad use back in the early 60's. I like to channel and its getting me up to speed with EVs. My current car is a mild hybred Kia Stonic which I am looking to change next summer/autumn. As I hit to big 70 at the end of the year it will probibly be my last. Don't need to worry about child buggies now but maybe mobility scooters instead so something with a bit more room in the back than the Stonic. I agree with a 'road tax' but it needs to apply to all cars both ICE & EV and based on weight and distance traveled per year and remove the fuel taxes instead apply pollution/health tax/levy on every litre of fossil fuel sold. Some more room in the cabin as well for my long legs and hopefully more extension on the steering wheel (completely agree with you on that Mike). It doesn't need to be a huge car and the range doesn't need to massive (250 miles or so) but the driving features I would like only tend to be on the top of the range, long range cars. Any thoughts?

On soviet car controls, would they compare the BMW i5 Tourer vs the EV9, the floorplan is almost identical, the only difference really being 24cm of height - with a lot less space in the i5 ??? Or is it all just perception.

I'm getting a little annoyed about the commentary from certain quarters trying to cut off the open conversation about larger EVs. Yes, large EV= more resources and more polluting than small EV, however, still less polluting than ICE SUVs and most resources going into both EVs and ICE vehicles can be recycled.
Ideally we live in a world not requiring personal vehicles at all so the issue becomes a moot point. We don't live in the ideal world though so we should be channeling customers to whatever EV or other potentially emission free vehicle we can get them into.
If the EV movement can get an ICE driver into a Hybrid, it's a win. Hybrid into PHEV = win. PHEV into EV = win. Anything to cut down emissions needs to be considered a win.
The Grandland and other large SUV EVs may just be the win we need to offer someone to get them to give up their ICE vehicle.

  • @Halobolola1

VED should be based on Mass x Annual mileage x £rate and put a temporary EV reduction to encourage people switching. Weight is known from the manufacturer, and mileage is recorded every MOT.
    A 3 tonne ICE travelling 9000 a year could be 27,000 x £0.02 = £540
Whereas a 2.4 tonne EV doing 7000 would be £168
And a 1 tonne car doing 4000 miles would be £76

We all love the nice retro car designs of the 60th up to 90th . . the R5, the Alpine, the Mini . . . .I wonder why 😉😇
Buying "to big" cars is probably also a bit "status"? And indeed waste of material.
But . . . there are a lot of people that realy need a bigger car, like Nicola.
I would never vote for restricting people to buy a bigger Car.
That would open the door for restricting people to buy a bigger house or boat?.
Those are also more expansive to build and to maintain. So when you can afford it and like it, go for it.

Road Tax was abolished in the 1930's. I think you mean VED.. A system based on vehicle weight would be both unfair, and unenforceable. For example, you could get someone who has a Range Rover, but may only cover 4000 miles a year in it. And on the other hand, you might get a Fiat 500 owner who covers 15'000 miles a year. A system of Road Tolls is the fairest way. Those who use the roads more often will pay more. A system based on vehicle weight will penalise low mileage motorists.

Regarding using carbon fiber and aluminium to lighten the cars, both of those technologies actually makes the car higher production emissions. No problem, I hear people say, because you fix it with lower operating emissions. But the problem is we're not needing to lower emissions. We're needing to ELIMINATE emissions altogether. For CF, it's material creation and lack of recycleability. For aluminum, it's heat treating, though they are more recycleable than even steel, except that aluminum alloys greatly complicate recycle. Expert on LCA point to steel as the lowest emitting. No reporting yet on how good or bad the gigacasting is, except fluff paragraphs about money savings.

Cars have become too wide. First it was SUVs, now the hatchbacks are over 2m (including mirrors). Even the Renault 5 e-tech is 2.02m. I bought an MG4 and I wish it was narrower. It's less stressful to drive when there is more room to pass. Since most families are now 2 +2, 2 + 1 or 1 + 2 why are manufacturers insistent on putting 3 seats into the back?

Why do petrol heads seem to enjoy going slowly and noisily? Hyundai i20 N takes 6.2 seconds to do 0-62. An entry level Volvo EX30 will do it half a second faster and an MG4 XPower in just 3.8 seconds. I guess some people haven't grown out of the brrm brrms

Moved from my e golf to Model Y, as my kids are now taller than me, plus have to get Max the husky in the back too. Will switch to a 2 seater in a few years though 😉

Tesla Robotaxi is just joke, look at Baidu actually just putting their Apollo GO 4 seater Robotaxi on the road, no fuss around it. And will soon expand it outside of the China.
    Great podcast ❤❤

Just on the expensive/luxury car tax. The £40,000 list price threshold is inclusive of options, so if adding a heat pump pushes you over £40,000 you'll have to pay the £410 extra a year for 5 years. So I'm not sure what you mean about manufacturers being creative with options and packs. But do correct me if I'm wrong on this.
I'd been looking at the Elroq 85 with a colour option and winter pack, but unfortunately adding the heat pump takes it over 40k. It really should be included as standard - other manufacturers manage it (like Renault) on vehicles with a much lower list price.

LOVE or HATE TESLA BUT WITHOUT TESLA there Would be NO ELECTRIFYING ?
You Should TEST DRIVE a Tesla with FSD FULL SELF DRIVING

You would have to go to the US to do that and if you did you might believe it could happen soon. I remember a couple of months ago you (Mike) saying that the Cybertruck would never be more than a gimmick and only a few ever made. They have made more than 30,000 so far as they ramp up to a target of 250,000 a year and is now the third largest selling EV in the USA. behind two other Tesla models. You will probably be proved wrong on this as well and have announced they will launch a level 4 version of FSD in Texas and California next year.

Two people that have achieved nothing in their lives talking about the greatest industrialist of our time.
Electrifying hates Elon sooooo much because they don’t like his Tweets. They ignore the massive improvements Tesla have made to the whole EV industry.
They said ‘Cybercab is just a nothing’ as they can’t see what this product and the effect it will have on personal car ownership. You don’t need to own a car when you can have a chauffeured car for 20ppm.

Agreed, I have never heard either Ginny or Mike say anything positive about Tesla. Ginny, whose job it is to critique cars could only say it looked "Weird". Obviously never going to be wined and dined in posh hotels by Tesla.

I still can’t understand product design? You as critics know what we want in a car and yet manufactures still get things wrong ? Cannot understand how they still get something wrong in every product, they need to employ someone grounded to tick all the boxes .

Strange reaction from Ginny in this... the whole reason you are seeing EVs in the West is because Musk showed through Tesla that you can make them at scale. She could also do with catching on the current state of FSD. Seems to me she is letting her political beliefs influence her thoughts on what Tesla are doing. A new disruption in transport is coming and she is going to completely miss it until it jumps out in your face.

Agree with Julian, about huge cars. Your generation (Nikola excepted) all grew up with small cars. It was in some ways a limiting factor, reminding us, we needed to have 2 children max and the stuff we could fit in the trunk is how we could holiday. It's very very wrong to assume in a world that is literally crashing, that we reframe the argument that SUVs are needed by families. Ginny, you've just returned from France, the land of the tiny car.
Folks, we need to challenge everyone's right to choose what they want to choose. This is a much bigger philosophical question, but it's clear that almost to the last one, EV car reviewers don't truly understand the impact of cars and their unsustainability even in EV form.

So everyone needs to live in the same size house? Have the same size car,? Have the same size kitchen, garden, shower,?
Will it be forbidden to ride a motorcycle to, coarse there are people that can do without? Where does that end?

    • @karlInSanDiego
      @karlInSanDiego 2 месяца назад

@@BMWHP2 during wartime, rationing and shared sacrifice are the norm. You drop all pretences that you have the privilege to do as you please. Instead, you planted a home garden to help feed yourself, counted yourself lucky if you had a bicycle for mobility and you got stuck in trying to participate in the combined effort. Decarbonizing our global society, particularly in spoiled "developed" nations will be the most difficult challenge human civilization has ever faced, and so far, we've not even made a mark on reducing global emissions. This is your wakeup call. We need radical, life altering change, and 3 row SUVs are completely incompatible with full decarbonization. BTW, I never said motorcycles won't work, but if you study the EV motorcycle space carefully, their high speed efficiency is poor. So perhaps 25-35 mph e-bikes are massively more sustainable than Energica EV motorcycles that just went under.
