Tom’s adapter comments are spot on. I chatted with a nice guy at a V2 Tesla Supercharger trying to use a j1772 adapter with his Bolt. First, people keep stating Superchargers are open to other vehicles. The problem is there are tons of V2 superchargers that will never work. Nothing is labeled on the charger and not everyone will know. Then add on AC vs DC adapters and there will be a lot of confusion. Please speak with your manufacturer contacts about better communication.
Looking forward to seeing the Porsche's 718 EV in 2025 and BMW's M3 EV in late 2026. Might take a 2nd gen of these before they can compete with ICE Caymans and M2/M3's.
Regarding the need for fast charging: I'm on my third EV and I take almost monthly medium range trips (200-300 miles one way). None of my EVs charge faster than 150kW. I'm doing fine. If I didn't have a home charger, I'd definitely be buying a different EV.

We need to adapt at the source for this transition to continue. We NEED hundreds of thousands of 80 amp AC units scattered across the nation, to include workplace and residential locations.
I'm curious how you all fit in the EX30...4 of us, at varying size (I'm 5'9") tried to sit in the EX30 at the San Diego Auto show and all 4 of us hit our knee on the console when trying to sit in the driver's seat at normal position. Only way to avoid it was to manually move the seat all the way down and pretty far back before sitting down.
Hyundai updated the estimated 10-80% charge time for the 2025 version of the Ioniq 5 from 18 minutes up to 20 minutes. The extra 2 minutes are likely due to the larger battery. Officially, Hyundai says 25 minutes on 400v, so that's only 5 minutes different. Not that bad of a trade-off like Tom was saying.
We love our Equinox EV and our biggest issue with it is the slow DC chargers in our Eastern provinces here in Canada. Mostly charge at home and that gets us to most places and back on day trips. Infrastructure is the biggest issue.
I’m surprised GM already reported 670 sales - it’s only been out a couple weeks. And I totally disagree with Kyle - I think the IQ version looks much better than the ICE Escalade. ICE version looks like they’ve plopped a too large body on a too small BOF chassis.
@@DriveElectricWithDomenickThat could definitely be. The “buzz” on social media seems pretty high on this one, which is a good sign early on. Also nearly 2,700 listed on CarGurus already, so a lot in-transit to dealers already which is good to see. I wonder if they have plans for the smaller/cheaper 20-module pack to go in this 🤔
As others said, thanks for pulling together the 2025 info! Perhaps a future (Weds?) episode could cover some "missing brands". I feel like the names could have been mentioned and just said nothing coming. Several were done like this but others were not like Vinfast, Aptera, Telo (2026 maybe, did have the interview recently), Smart, Fiat, GMC, Scout, etc. This doesn't need to be long. Just a Part 2 to your great show today :-)
I had meant to mention Vinfast, but missed it as I was working in alphabetical order and my brain was a bit fried by the time I got to the V's. 😵💫 Aptera presents an interesting case, since I believe they had meant to have a product on the road before 2026. It would be a small number of vehicles in the grand scheme of things, but it counts, and you never know when an idea will catch fire.
Thanks for the reply. Totally understandable. Others have mentioned a few more brands. Perhaps a "part 2" could first cover NA/EUR brands missed and then add in some other noteworthy brands in the rest of the world (e.g., China). Appreciate the efforts to put this show together regularly. One of the few that I try to catch live 👍👍
Great walk thru 🙌 Looking forward to the new BMW lineup.. Looks promising. But the 2025 highlight for me will be the Volvo ES90 launch.. Really hope it delivers! Will also be cool to see the new EX30 Cross Country. Not sure if you will get that version in the US from launch or not..
So many folks in the Ioniq 5 subreddit are obsessed with getting NACS. I get that it's better long term, but I agree it's premature. CCS with an adapter and just having Superchargers available as a bailout is going to be the most ideal setup for high voltage cars for at least the next 5 years. IMO the rear wiper is a much more important improvement.
My day one reserved Polestar 4 was scheduled to arrive here in Portland in March when I canceled back in November. Originally January. Pushed back to April. Then forward to March.
Guys, I've always enjoyed the content. I'd really ask that Hybrid & PHEV advances continue to be included and expanded upon. I think there is a lot of room for education on the benefits of these sort of vehicles for full size SUVs & Trucks; as well as for people that don't own a dedicated parking space/ LVL2 charger and therefore can't take advantage of the lower costs and overnight charging convenience of EV's. Thanks!
That new Bolt sounds like a rebranded Tesla compact. They’re the only ones capable of making a compact profitably. Ask Mary where GM will be making the new Bolt…
And kudos to Kia/Hyundai for pushing to NACS first. At least this tells the industry to expedite the push for a single standard. The sooner the better, and the sooner we can eliminate the adaptor expectation.
The nice thing about buying a new cheap car is there is a warranty. A $18k new kia is way less scary to drive around away from home than any used car, but Especially one based on new technology. You may get stuck and possibly have repairs that won’t be covered (many who only have a budget for cheap cars have little if anything to spare for repairs ). Having a real (ie not looking like an experiment and having the equivalent ‘range’ to a new Kia k4 for example and reasonable charging speed ) $20-21k new EV option with a good warranty would help a lot of people comfortably enter the EV buying market.
Disagree totally with Kyle. Love my digital rearview mirror. Never want to go back to regular mirror. See so much more of road. Tesla might suck at it - not sure. 1:44:12

It is hard to separate a Tesla's EV's from a CEO that is so interchangeable with the brand. To Tom's point at 51 minutes. I have had a Nissan Leaf for over six years now and I use it for running around town. I charged it at a DC charger at the Nissan dealer a few times the first few years I had it because of range anxiety, but it's literally been 3-4 years since I have DC charged it. If a person is using a Bolt as a commuter vehicle which they can charge at home, they are never going to use one. To Kyle's point, people who can't charge at home are people I just wouldn't recommend an EV to. We definitely aren't in the place where there is a gas station on every corner. I can't wait until we get there with EV charging.
I've driven my bolt quite a few times from Maryland up to New York and used DCFC along the way. I've made the trip about 10 times. Wouldn't do it with the family, but alone with plenty of time is fine. Otherwise we use it around town shuttling kids around for 25k+ miles per year. Best economical car I've ever had.
Thaks Kyle for ripping the two best selling new affordable bevs. Any skeptical ev buyers just changed the channel. Kyle needs to get his head out of the clouds and come back down to Earth where the majority of us live. 50% of the publicity never buy new cars. They can't afford them PERIOD.... For every $5000 the price of a car goes up. The number that can afford that increase decreases by 50% Lucid , Rivian loosing 30k to 50k on every vehicle sold legacy manufactures cant do that. Toyota and Honda were not wrong on not jumping head long into EV'S . US ev sales would not be significantly higher if they did jump in. Honda is not a huge company and may be bankrupt by now if they did jump in ten years ago. Does anyone really believe that Toyota and Honda can't make a serious Bev when they put their minds to it?
Still waiting for my Ford Lightning NACS adapter. Moved from Oct, Nov, Dec , and now Jan 2025. I bought Lectron to keep from getting stuck on road trips. This has been a big let down. It was a major influence in my decision to buy the Lightning.
I agree Ford has dropped the ball on this, but it did deliver on being the first OEM to get Supercharger access. If they didn't offer free adapters I believe most of their customers would have been happier because they would have just bought one from the beginning and never looked back.
There seems to be some misconceptions here in comments in the chat. AFAIK, Range Rover/JLR dealers aren't taking orders for any EV as there is nothing to order. but from what I've heard from dealers, they are keeping lists of interested buyers and some may be taking deposits for a queue. (JLR has an email interest subscription list as well)
I agree with Tom (over Kyle) on the importance of very fast DCFCing. Two thirds of the US population lives in single family homes. I charge in my garage. In the almost 2 years that I have owned a Cadillac Lyriq I have used DCFC on only one trip.
Never mind the Ram REV or Charger or whatever. The Tesla Semi has a 700kwh battery. Just drive one of those if you want to tow. Also Kyle, sell that silly sprinter camper and look into a Semi and Anderson Mobile Estate instead. That will get you way off grid and will have plenty of room for a big solar array. Just sayin.
I am with Kyle that charging for apartment dwellers is important. I have been watching a video by The Network Architect. They have been taking a trip across I40 in a Lyriq. I was amazed at how well it charged at 5am with no preconditioning after sitting all night in December in Amarillo Texas. He was getting 180 KWH almost as soon as he plugged in. Have you guys found that in your tests?
When discussing Tesla sales, they glossed over the fact that sales are down year over year with the addition of the Cybertruck. Now selling 5 models versus previous 4 and your overall sales are down, that's a pretty big miss.
@@elemenop718 Rivian sold 51k vehicles in 2024, and that was supplier constrained. I don't think Lucid have announced full year yet, but they were on track to top 9k this year. They remain severely production constrained, but it has improved YoY. CT sales are somewhere between 30 and 50k, Tesla never broke them out but lumped them in with Model X and S as 'Other' which totaled 85k.
@@SirOsisofLiver Rivian doesn't breakout their sales either. Half of those sales could have been the Amazon delivery truck. So call it like maybe 30K they sold to real consumers. Lucid sold 9K. that;s 39K. Tesla sold around 51K Cybertrucks. You know this from the recalls. So like I said, the Cybertruck alone outsold two whole brands on the market. So how can someone say Cybertrucks are not selling lol. Then what is Lucid and Rivian doing?
No Mini love. With the tariffs, the Aceman is stuck in China at least until the England manufacturing change. Countryman SE has been selling like hotcakes here in CO.
That drop in Tesla sales are just people waiting for Juniper. Wasn’t much of a factor with the Model 3 refresh, but they sell way more Model Ys. It’s like 70% of the cars they sell. If 20-30% of buyers decide to wait for Juniper instead of buying in Q4 your numbers will look like that.
Had the EX30 SMER+ for 8 months here in the UK, good car with but annoying software niggles which Volvo seem to be really slow off the mark to fix. No reliability issues, so far…..
I believe that Tom is right when he says DC charging mightn't matter that much. I very rarely drive over 300 miles. I almost always charge at home. Mostly, I use DC charging just to make sure it works.
It does matter, but I believe not as much as a lot of people think. The Equinox, for instance, charges from 20% to 80% in 33-34 minutes. That's 60% of the battery which is good for about 180 highway miles according to my highway range test. Most other "better charging" EVs in its class can add about that much driving range in about 20-25 minutes. So you're gonna be stuck at the charger for about 10-15 more minutes on a road trip, and about 20 more minutes if you were charging from a lower SOC to 90% (let's say you can't charge at home so you charge once a week at a DCFC). Is 20 minutes longer less convenient? Absolutely. But I don't think it's reason enough to not consider that vehicle.
Nothing new, battery size cost, range are all about infrastructure, no need for a big battery if local. Need to show on interstate exit signage(like fossil fuel dispensary ads) when travelling and good DCFC. Avail. infrastructure and battery tech are lagging hence the slow adoption(not rocket science).
WTH All you guys hate phev's Yet you all throw around the saying "just throwing batteries at it" There are no other choices for a good towing truck. 220kwh battery or phev. Get over it.
I have a Rav4 Prime and it’s been a great car and held its value far better than any comparable EV. It’s kind of Gospel here that PHEVs are the worst of both worlds, but that’s all about priorities. I have a car that’s a great EV around town, does fine on the freeway and is a great hybrid car for long trips that gets about 36 mpg. Better than ICE car as I’m driving electric most days and not wasting fuel at stop lights etc and all the advantages of a gas car on long trips. Has plenty of horsepower and consumer reports rates it very high for reliability. When Tom says they are “neither fish nor fowl” I kind of wonder how familiar he is with my particular PHEV. They are not all the same. It doesn’t mean I’m not interested in going all electric, just saying what I have is a very good option. I’ve had it 3.5 years now and so far so good.
I was wondering if I just spaced out or if they skipped it. Seems like with the ID Buzz just barely hitting the dealerships it might be worth mentioning.

I won't buy a ev , that can't charge at least up to 175kw and in fact 200kw is now my new mark
Buick is a dying brand. And any manufacturer who wastes time with hybrids will place themselves at risk of being left behind, and possibly not surviving. This is nothing new. It happened a century ago with horse carriage makers. Those who listened to the anti-automobile FUD and hesitated, went under. Those which took it seriously in time, became the GM's of the world and joined the automobile-only newly founded manufacturers like Ford and Mercedes Benz. Those who ignored history are doomed to repeat it. Current case and point: Nissan - which never cared about the Leaf, and refused to upgrade it. And I agree 100% with Kyle with fast charging. The time for Bolt and Leaf slow-ass charging was 10 years ago. There's no excuse for slow charging anymore. That's why Teslas sell, and have sold, so we'll. They were the first to mass manufacture truly modern EV's that could actually replace ICE and they NEVER player around with slow charging. And Hyundai adding the NACS port, but placing it on the WRONG side is dumbfounding. For Tesla, the Model X and S will go 800V next. And there was no mention of the 800V charging cabinets arriving in 2025 for V4 sites.
Its all about price Kyle. Remember our last election, its the economy stupid! Same with evs. Gotta keep the price down. Thus the popularity of the Equinox EV
Man, how did you guys trick Kyle into coming back for an entire show about future product? 🤣 Nice to see the band back together though 👍

If they are not selling. What is Rivian and Lucid doing? The CT outsells both of of those brands combined
It isn't that most of your viewers and listeners won't buy one, it is that most of your viewers and listeners *can't* buy one.
GM doing well
Had the EX30 SMER+ for 8 months here in the UK, good car with but annoying software niggles which Volvo seem to be really slow off the mark to fix.
Lot of old buicks in the midwest...
WTH
All you guys hate phev's
Yet you all throw around the saying
"just throwing batteries at it"
There are no other choices for a good towing truck. 220kwh battery or phev.
Get over it.
I've said multiple times here that the RamCharger is what the market wants/needs and that should be the first truck they bring.
I’ve had it 3.5 years now and so far so good.
you missed VW brand
I was wondering if I just spaced out or if they skipped it. Seems like with the ID Buzz just barely hitting the dealerships it might be worth mentioning.
I won't buy a ev , that can't charge at least up to 175kw and in fact 200kw is now my new mark
Stating peak kW draw is really useless. You need average kW draw up to 80% - that's what most important, IMO
Volkswagen
The ford F150 lightening vs the gm Ev pickup trucks is by far better... looks better and is a better value..
You must have fallen on your head lately! The GM ev truck line shames what Ford has to offer!
I disagree 100% with Kyle. The majority of us do charge at home. Of you cannot charge at home then you dont need to have an ev
Its all about price Kyle. Remember our last election, its the economy stupid! Same with evs. Gotta keep the price down. Thus the popularity of the Equinox EV
Tesla is worth all of the other western world auto manufacturers COMBINED.
