I genuinely love these reviews, even when I disagree with your conclusions. I thought this mic sounded fantastic on every source, especially electric guitar. It's like the basic flavor of a 58, but smoothed out and extended. It seems every time you describe a mic as "mid forward" and recommend against it, it sounds perfect to me, so I guess there's no accounting for taste. But that's also why the reviews are so great - you provide more useful context than any other reviews on the internet, and we can make our own decisions based on what we hear and our own unique needs.
Thank you very much Weird Dirt. That’s precisely why I include all the samples, and why I very rarely include any opinion before I wrap up the music test. If someone doesn’t want to hear my opinion and only hear the sound samples of the mics, they can do that and move on and develop their own opinion on it.
I felt the same way. I was shocked how much i liked the guitar sound, and sung vocals. It seems to have a very flat response, which in my use case is very good. I also liked the Rode Podmic....lol.
I prefer this MV7x to the MV7. I have been watching a three-host podcast where two have SM-7B's and one uses the MV7, which sounds noticeably different. I believe the MV7x would sound more cohesive.
Thank you for all the solid tips, microphone reviews and knowledge. I always crack and smile and laugh everytime you throw a box in each of your mic reviews! Keep being awesome!
Like always the RE20 puts SM7b and its derivatives to shame. Whether it's due to coloration or not, it offers a pleasing sound to those who like a rich tone on the speaker. It works well with deep voice people, and more mid to higher ranged voices. Granted the price tag can be a turn off, if one likes the sound of the RE20, the MXL V67G is a mic to look at.
Setting the Neumann aside because obvious, indeed the RE20 is so very good. Too bad it's not as good as rejecting background as others (including the great SM7b), and the black version can be hard or much more expensive to get in some regions.
Seems like great noise rejection and I would get one simply for that reason for streaming/gaming purposes given the 'totally good' overall sound. Well played Shure, and excellent thorough review again thank you.
Much more similar to the SM7B, than the original MV7 was. If there's a budget version of the SM7B, *this* comes much closer. Hard to understand why they blew it so badly with the MV7, except that they wanted to tune it differently on purpose.
About a year ago I bought a mic based on your recommendations, I still watch your reviews pretty often even though I don't need another one any time soon. I was going to bail on this one but I figured I should skip ahead to the musical interlude and I'm so glad I did, always good, but I laughed out loud at this one.
I feel like it may be confirmation bias as I just recently got an MV7X but I prefer how it sounds over everything he compared it to. Even the SM7B and Neumann.
Because of this channel I was able to set up my own equipment and bought an NT1 and a Scarlet 2i2. But I still come here to listen to more microphones because it's nice to keep up-to-date with the latest releases, even though I have the only set up I'll ever need for a few years... But I may just buy the SM7B or the RE20, just for the fun of it. Keep up the great reviews! I always look forward to them.
Personally the sound was quite the same to the SM58. Makes sense being another Shure mic just much cheaper I would totally buy this if it had the pricetag of the Podmic/AT2040/PD-70 but for the price it dont perform that much better or even look that much better either kinda same ballpark just with a price hike because people want the SM7B but cheaper and this don't seem to be much closer to the SM7b
Ugh. So for $80 more than the SM58 (Made in Good Ole Juarez, Mexico across the Rio from El Paso, TX) you get a Chinese mic with less bass, but do get that "radio" look. Thanks for the review, Bandrew. I guess it had to be done. But I'm sure looking forward to your review of that tasty MicrotechGefell over there.... :-)
Love your videos man, I learn so much every time thanks to all the comparisons between so many different mics. Just picked up an SM7b as I'm just starting out in my mixing career, and I'm loving every bit of it. My clients are upgrading from things like the Blue Yeti and AT2020, and they're really happy with the results as well. Just wanted to say thanks, as you really helped me make my decision on a big purchase (for an amateur). P.S. Laughed super hard at the "That's what we call a joke" bit, please keep the videos coming!!!!
I like the sound of this mic from your review. The mic sounds more "honest" than "exciting" and I think that's perfect for broadcast and speech particularly. I was looking for a lower priced alternative to the SM7B and this seemed right on the money, especially given I don't need USB and it's a noticeable price difference.
I'm really happy that the video helped you understand the microphone and make a more informed purchasing decision that saved you some money. I hope the mic you get gives you years of happy recording. Thanks for sharing Saxxon.
Every time I watch one of these dynamic mic reviews and comparisons, I find I really like the Se Electronics v7, and I may purchase one. The MV7x does not wow me, but sounds relatively thin and a wee bit tinny, and is overpriced for what you get. I prefer the SM58 to this. Great review as always
The V7 is pretty nice. It likes a lot of gain though so depending on what pre-amp you’re using you’ll probably have to have 100% gain. However, Klark Teknik has a Cloudlifter alternative for $35 that works great. I just bought my son the V7 along with an Audient Evo4. The gain was at 100%. With the Klark Teknik CM-1, the gain on the Evo4 is now at 50%. I also have an SM58 and the V7 certainly produces a fuller sound to my ear. More broadcast-y than the 58 for sure.
@@ryanwilson5936 I already have a Fethead, which by most accounts works as well as the Cloudlifter. Thanks for the report on the v7 and the heads-up on the Klark Teknik, which I had not heard of. Cheers.
The V7 is thinner and tinnier than the MV7/x, which is not a bad thing, since it's designed to be sung into closer than this, which adds proximity effect - but it's odd that you think the opposite. The 58 has a treble that manages to be simultaneously dull and peaky. I wouldn't use one unless I absolutely had to.
My mic is only recording on one side and its really quiet, when i turn up the gain on my audio interface it sounds really bad, i dont know anything about microphones, you know what the problem is?
Thank you for saving my sanity! I heard the MV7 much worse than the MV7X (in XLR of course, and through RUclips compression) and I thought I was going mad.... Also, sightly terrified you felt the need to clarify the mic joke...
Great review. I liked what I heard from this mic. It sounded better than all the others except for the SM7b (so smooth). Good combination of clarity, depth, and high end that's not too harsh. MXL really sucked, Neumann is in a different unattainable category. $150 would be a sweet deal on a MV7x.
@@Pentti_Hilkuri it'll have the benefit of using USB-C, which is slowly becoming a universal connector. So you won't have to bring as many cables if you're constantly on the road.
Sensational! I didn't even know about this release. I think it will compete with the Audio Technica AT2040 and the Samson Q9u, as well as a few others. Congratulations, excellent as always! Thanks!
Thank you so much Harrison, that means a lot. There are a lot of other fantastic mic reviews out there as well, and I always recommend getting a few opinions and listening to multiple samples. Thank you so much though.
In your conclusion you mention that sub $180 there are some incredible sounding options that may not look as cool. As an audio only podcast I would love to know what those mics are that you recommend? Really enjoyed your expertise and video!
Sorry for asking such a beginner question, what is exactly "AudioBoost: +5-10" etc. Its something different than Gain I believe. Thanks for this insane review by the way.
Really liked this on electric guitar actually... plus the off axis rejection is ace. Still prefer the Procaster though. Thanks for all you do Sir Bandrew :)
The MV7x sounds better than the MV7 in my opinion; he's right, it's an improvement. Overall, the MVX it's a much flatter/reference sound vs most of the other mics, except the SM58 (almost the same sound). I'm using a Focusrite Gen 3 Scarlett Solo and Sennheiser HD 400 Pro Reference Headphones. Thanks for the review!
So I’m seriously considering the MV7X to use for a D&D podcast. I’m going to be using 5-6 mics around the table, but as of right now there is not a plan to run video. I’m very interested in the other recommended mics you mentioned at the end of your video around that price point, $100-$200 range. They don’t have to be pretty just need that good good sound, thanks!
You're very welcome. Thank you for the comment and the kind words. Knowing that the video helped you make your decision clearly puts a big smile on my face. Happy recording.
I got bored of sm58 and looking for the new toy again. Can't stop watching your videos :D Somehow Samson q2u stands out rather often, it sounds bright without sounding annoying. Hmm..
Just picked this up with $30 off on Black Friday for a do it all studio mic with boom at the home studio. Holding out on getting the earthworks Ethos for a bit. Hoping this tides me over. Good to hear the XLR sounds better than MV7
When I heard the Neumann U87 Ai I was like "damn it sounds really good imma get this one instead" and then he mentionned the price of 3600$ and I was like "nevermind well that explains it" lmao
Great review as always. I'm really interested in the off axis sound and was wondering if an off axis example from 6ft would be noticeable compared to 6ft with it pointing towards you? The off axis seems really good at eliminating sound and if you live in a place with noisy outside, perhaps this mic wouldn't pic up those noises as long as you're far away from the window and the mic is pointed at you. What would be your thoughts on that? I'm still looking for a great mic that doesn't pick up any noisy window disturbances for voice over work.
I’m confused with the market position for this mic. Perhaps the MV7 with USB has a position with streaming/gaming scene, but this mic with only XLR, for the price point, has massive competition that is much better. $180 bucks can buy a damn good mic.
Hey, when you say 180$ bucks can buy a damn good mic which ones do you suggest?? I'm making videos that do not show me in them so I can get close to the mic so I really do not care how it looks just want one that sounds good. Issue is I have no idea what to listen for and or what to look for and I've been binging Bandrew's videos for 2 days but I still have no idea what to buy. What do you suggest purely for voice overs?
Great review, but when you're comparing the mics, the angle of your face is a little different (more facing) than the control mic, the MV7X (more angled away). It's a subtle difference, but it makes a difference. For example, I think the difference between the MV7 and the SM7b would actually appear a little less than it does in this comparison, just because of that angle difference.
It's indeed very very good. But don't forget it's not absolute, it heavily depend on the voice. What works best for him isn't universal. And it's through RUclips compression, the Neumann has more to it and without RUclips you would hear that.
Hey Bandrew, not yet released in Australia but orders are being taken. I placed mine today. $246AUD. Hold onto your hat. An SM7B is $799 AUD. It sleeps with me on my pillow. Cheers mate.
Why would anyone pay as much as this microphone costs considering it's... abysmall frequency response. I get that Shure wants to create a cheaper version of SM7B without canibalizing actual SM7B sale's but that's more or less equalivement to SM57 with it's dedicated windscreen BOTH of which I am VERY happy to own. I mean seriously if anyone wants cheaper alternative to SM7B just get an SM57. Useful review thou. Edit: I am DEFINITELY giving a thumbs up.
Why does the MV7X sound so much better? Is the MV7 creating noise or interference or something from the added internal stuff? Really nice sounding and looking mic
Amazing the difference between them. Note: Rode Podmic has less bass frequencies compared to others despite being quite popular. In this price range and that has this "podcaster style" (good to appear in the frame), the best competitors of this new Shure MV7x are: Audio Technica AT2040 and Samson Q9u in my opinion. Remember: you need to be wearing good headphones (such as professional headphones) to hear the difference between these mics.
I'm wearing my 770 Beyer dynamics and honestly I only found that the longer the body of the mic is the more tonal consistency it has. This mic is slightly behind the mv7b I do hear a bass variation and it sounds much soothing on the 7b vs 7x. IS it good for vocals recording yes, and yes one can manipulate it to ones taste with after effect enhancements. Some of these mics cant do that.
Couple questions: What mixer were you using for the gain to be at +4 in your tests? (I will be using a zoom podtrack p4 and unsure if if the mv7x is gain hungry like the sm7b)... also. in your comment you mention the audio boost was +10db (was that in post processing or was that a gain lifter??) Thank you!
I have a review suggestion: iMac M3 microphone. It's not a pro microphone but some people may be interested in hearing what it sounds like, especially with technology becoming increasingly better.
Your videos are informative. ( Which i don't understand) you are not the person who just gives rating to it. Like: i give this mike 5 stars and its good, i used it for couple of weeks and in this price range, its not bad.. its usually like it.. but you are read deal... Respect : )
Seems like the Rode Procaster or Podmic are the better options for the price. The MV7X still has the software of the MV7 I assume so that's a plus point.
Hey, came here off the back of the MV7 review and now I'm curious which one you'd recommend? I don't have any audio interface setup at the moment but would love to get into it at some point in the future if I can find a great budget option (will go watch your other vids for that hopefully). I've been using a Blue Yeti for 7 years or so, mostly for comms while gaming, work video conferences and I can't quite get it to sound great, but that may be because of my extremely limited audio knowledge. I'm also set up in the middle of my apartment between the living room and the kitchen so the yeti picks up a ton, even with some processing a friend help me set up. And regardless of which of the two you'd recommend, do you think it would be a good step up from the Yeti overall? Thanks for the video and thanks for the help! :)
Man, gotta say, in my ears the Shure MV7X sounds A LOT better than the MXL especially after hearing them back to back. Honestly if you look for a broadcast mic the Shure MV7X seems like a pretty good deal.
@@Podcastage Thank you! I actually got very lucky and was able to pick one up for 100 dollars. I am replacing my AST-Stealth in my studio/gaming room. Honestly, used to love the AST but it has given me a lot of issues with the build quality. Really happy with the MV7X, thanks to your review, perfect for my needs :)
I tried the PGA58 based on this video, and it has replaced my SM48 which I feel is too bright and boosted. Could you do a PGA58 re-review? I think it's underrated. Thanks for another great video!
did you not use any pre amps? especially for the sm7b? Im getting confused now, so many different opinions on pre amps and usage, but based of off this video alone i think they all sound great(if you’re not using a pre amp) And by the way, by db boost, do you mean literally just adjusting the gain afterwards and adding on 10+db?
Nothing tops the RE20. RE20 is the GOAT of dynamic broadcast mics. However, the SM7B won the popularity contest because of Joe Rogan. MV7 sounds good though if you don't want to spend $450.
That's great that you've found the mic that you prefer. That's the goal of these videos and the comparisons, allow people to make up their own mind and find the mic that fits their voice, their needs, and their preferences. Glad you've found the one for you.
Nice review. Do you know if this can be used with an XLR to USB adapter that can only deliver phantom power (ie the PP can't be disabled)? Would the mic potentially be damaged by the unneeded phantom?

if i buy shure mv7 so what did boom arm stand come with this free?
No it does not come with a boom arm for free.
Electro Voice RE20 blew all others away.
First thought. I WANT THAT ONE. And then I checked what it costs.
It's indeed very very good. But don't forget it's not absolute, it heavily depend on the voice. What works best for him isn't universal.
And it's through RUclips compression, the Neumann has more to it and without RUclips you would hear that.
Brilliant video
Thank you very much Peter, that means a lot. Glad it was helpful. Happy recording.
SE V7 amazes me at its price.
it's amazing
Man I really like how that RE20 sounds 🥺
Hey Bandrew, not yet released in Australia but orders are being taken. I placed mine today. $246AUD. Hold onto your hat. An SM7B is $799 AUD. It sleeps with me on my pillow.
Cheers mate.
I really like how you compare and review equipment. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
I thought it compared very well with SM7B in voice. What is your opinion? Good review, as always.
Of all the "broadcast" mics, the SM7B is still the king. It's so much better sounding.
But the V7 is the king of 100ish dollar mics
im at 6:31 and this man has successfully sold me the MV7X as my last microphone ill ever need. it sounds incredible
Why would anyone pay as much as this microphone costs considering it's... abysmall frequency response.
I get that Shure wants to create a cheaper version of SM7B without canibalizing actual SM7B sale's but that's
more or less equalivement to SM57 with it's dedicated windscreen BOTH of which I am VERY happy to own.
I mean seriously if anyone wants cheaper alternative to SM7B just get an SM57.
Useful review thou. Edit: I am DEFINITELY giving a thumbs up.
I just love the sound of the Rode Podmic
wow. The best review. Thanks
Thanks a lot for this video, extremely informative!
Great review as always. What is the antipop you use for the plosive tests? Min 2:45
Hello bro
Can i use Shure Mv7 with audacity
Please reply
The MV7 should work with any DAW. I see no reason why the MV7 would not work with Audacity.
Good sound for a spoken voice mic. The Shure Beta 58-A looks fine :-)
Respect : )
Oooo, is that a Gefell UMT-70s in the background? When do we get to see THAT review?
Dannnggg.. MV7x for the win!!!
Excellent video! I still like the Shure SM58
yes mv7x and sm58 r same sounding but Procaster is more close to sm7b
This is a great microphone and worth every penny
True: the PGA58 sounds VERY similar and is MUCH cheaper!
best review of mic on planet earth
W Video. Showed us exactly what we needed
Seems like the Rode Procaster or Podmic are the better options for the price. The MV7X still has the software of the MV7 I assume so that's a plus point.
The MV7x doesn't have any software, it's just the XLR output.
@@Podcastage ah. Well that's understandable I guess.
Great video sir.
Please please tell which one is better between Sure mv7X and audio technica AT 2040
One isn't "better". It's about which one YOU like the sound of more.
I see that Gefell in the corner, you can't hold this away from me.
I would never try to hold it from you.
Happy the video helped you hone in on the sound that you like. Thanks for checking it out and best of luck on your recordings.
The Neumann U87 is and will always be the only mic offering good value for money.
I tried the PGA58 based on this video, and it has replaced my SM48 which I feel is too bright and boosted. Could you do a PGA58 re-review? I think it's underrated. Thanks for another great video!
did you not use any pre amps? especially for the sm7b?
Im getting confused now, so many different opinions on pre amps and usage, but based of off this video alone i think they all sound great(if you’re not using a pre amp)
And by the way, by db boost, do you mean literally just adjusting the gain afterwards and adding on 10+db?
Thank you for the review
Hey, Bandrew, huge fan of your work. Question, is the MV7-X as gain hungry as the SM7B? Do you need a Fet-head or other external preamp with it?
Nothing tops the RE20. RE20 is the GOAT of dynamic broadcast mics. However, the SM7B won the popularity contest because of Joe Rogan. MV7 sounds good though if you don't want to spend $450.
That's great that you've found the mic that you prefer. That's the goal of these videos and the comparisons, allow people to make up their own mind and find the mic that fits their voice, their needs, and their preferences. Glad you've found the one for you.
Great review sir. What would be your recommendation for the best mic for teams/zoom calls?
I heard a difference between the MV7 and the X, and like the way the MV7X sounds. The MV7 sounded a bit more nasally and muffled.
Glad I returned the MV7 and went with the EV RE27ND. The MV7 didn't sound good in either USB/XLR to me; very happy with the EV.
Yeah no fucking shit it would sound better, it's a 500+ dollar mic lol, there would be a problem if it didn't sound better at that price range.
great as always, still and SE V7 fan
What interface did you plug the mic into, was it the focusrite?
yes
Nice review. Do you know if this can be used with an XLR to USB adapter that can only deliver phantom power (ie the PP can't be disabled)? Would the mic potentially be damaged by the unneeded phantom?
