and paper combination I use. The Pelikan nib is also easily the equal for smoothness and flow if not better than the Mont Blanc. They are also easier to change and cheaper.I can have several nibs for my Pelikan and change them in seconds. Don't get me wrong I have a large Boheme which I carry and use regularly and which I like a lot for its size and retractable nib which is nice. But I had to fine tune the nib and its still not as good as the 805 although admittedly very good.
You are a machine. Way to end the year, please don't stop making these videos... ever. I was looking for the bonus video but then I realized maybe this is the bonus video. Have a Happy New Year.
Why they never made the M1000 in a red-striped pattern, I will never understand....I love red, so I bought the M800 in red stripes instead :) Anyway, thank you for yet another wonderful pen review. You really are the RUclips Pen Review Master, and the time and effort you put into these things is truly appreciated. May 2013 be a good year for you! Oh, and any New Year's resolutions you'd care to share with us? ;)
Wonderful review. These videos are much appreciated bu those of us who do not have a place to try out or to even lay eyes on fountain pens before buying them. I only knew this pen from reputation and seeing it in pictures with no size references. Until now I thought this was a leviathan of a pen which was thick as a broom handle. (I had assumed it weighed a ton too.) Have a happy New Year!
My conclusions after nearly thity years of experience with both manufacturers is simple. If you want a nice pen that writes very well and will impress those around you buy a Mont Blance and accept its faults and its price! If you want a pen to use every day which writes even better and will never let you down buy a Pelikan.
So I am curious...I love my M600 and my MontBlanc 149....is it worth upgrading to the 1000? I went to buy a M800 and tried the 600 and it was just way better. I don't know how you dare buy without dipping....I have to try pens first at MB boutique or Laywine's in Toronto.
Very good review and hand writing. I can see that you are educated to write with fountain pens. I have Menuhin and Karajan from MB and M800 and M200 14K nib from Pelikan but I have to say MB has a lot to catch up with Pelikan.
A lot of people have told me that one can not write quickly with fountain pens.I normally need to write a little quickly. Please tell me if this is true or not.
I am also 16 and i'm deciding whether or not to get the aurora ipsilon deluxe or sailor 1911M, which do you recommend? Also, will be be attending the DC pen show this August? Just curious
Hello is there anywhere on the pen that can be used to find out what style of pelikan pen it is? I have acquired a pelikan pen that is very similar to yours it says pelika souveran germany on the rim of the cap
So I got the twsbi, I hope its good like you said, but Im not sure what ink to get because I dont have any, I got waterman blue, but what inks would you recomend?
Hi Mr.Brown, I find that the current sheaffer ball pen refills which have a round plastic cork at the end of the refill do not fit the old sheaffer ball pens where the plastic cork is tapered. The old refills are no longer available. Any suggestion, please? Regards Swaminathan from Chennai,India
Have you tried the M1000 with an EF nib? They have the most flex and "controlled" line variation of all the M1000 nibs The broad nib have the least flex.
Can you do a shootout between a Pelikan M800 and the Sailor 1911 large or Montblanc 146? (comparable sizes because i like the size of the 1911 large but want another nice Pelikan since i think the M1000 would be a littttleeeeee too big for my small-average hands)
Yes, I love Florida blue, or should I say Serenity blue and the PR Avacado. I have not tried the J. Herbin you mentioned. I may try it as I am looking for a nice brown. I like Stipula Sepia. Just rec'd a bottle of MB Carlo Colodi ink. It's nice, but I don' like it as it is too washed out for my taste as I prefer darker shades. I am going to try J. Herbin Lie de The and also MB Irish green which I here is also a nice dark shade of green. Perfect for that beautiful Pelikan M1000!
i'm getting one next week but can't decide which one, the black with gold trim and nib, the black with rodium trim and nib or the green stripped one shown here.
Because I realise that parker, sheaffer etc. pens are exclusive in a way that they only produce ball points, mechanical pencils, FPs and rollerballs in fancy finishes. However, pelikan also makes drawing pencils, colour pencils etc..
Happy new year Stephen !!!! I wanted to ask a question also, that pilot 78g B what kind of nib is that a stub, italic, etc ??? I bought one to dabble in a different style nib and MY GOD !!! Is that cut amazing !!!!! IC you hit the sweet spot it is much smoother than round nibs !!! I am asking to be specific because it states Stub (by the way found one in BB stub) but I want my parsons essential (amber which is back ordered) to be that cut,
Just ordered my first pen, an M805. I hope it's not too small, I was contemplating an M1000. I heard the nibs are very different between the two though. The 1000 being a bit springy and wet. Should get it next week. Enjoy your videos.
I want to my local World Luxe pen shop and checked out the M1000....holy crap...it's a monster...even the 800 is huge. Nice pens, but I'm not ready for those yet. I did buy a Montegrappa Parola with a fine nib. Very smooth, nice writing, and great style.
Nice review! I was wondering is you could review the Faber-Castell Ambition. Don't know is you own the pen, but I can't seem to find a lot of info about it online. Keep up the great video and happy New-Years!
Stephen, after I watched this review I bought this pen and I can tell you. I absolutely LOVE IT. By the way what paper do you use in this review? I guess it is Clairefontaine?
I bought myself a Pelikan pen I'd been desiring since the 70s when I got one of the green/black ballpoint version. Sorry, but in the 70s I needed a ballpoint for work and wasn't interested in fountain pens. So I equipped my self with an assortment of quality BPs for the time: a Pelikan, a Mont Blanc, several Parkers (I always have loved the Parker BP refill. They never seem to run out of ink.) Because of my budget, I went for the M800 with an OM nib. The M1000 was just a bit too costly.
Does the pen have ANY grip on the paper? Is it slippery like a ballpoint? With ballpoints, I do not get as good feedback from the paper and that results , for me at least, terrible handwriting. When i switch back to a fountain or roller-ball, it provides better handwriting. None of my pens are scratchy, but they all provide some feedback from the paper.
This is my second time watching this particular video (I'm thinking of getting a Pelikan pen soon, maybe a Sailor; no idea yet), and I still don't get it. What's the "obvious joke" you mentioned around 03:20? It's been bugging me :P
Dear Steven, I am watching all your videos from start to finish as I really enjoy them. I was wondering if you could recommend a few pens of a decent quality for under £20 sterling. This would be much appreciated and could you ask the Professor to draw some monuments and buildings, I would love to see his unique style portraying this. Best regards, Adam
I really like your videos and have learned quite a bit about fountains. I have always loved fountain pens...a trait passed down to me by my grandfather. Please help me choose a good fountain pen between montblanc 149, Oma's milord, sailor 1911, waterman exception, pelican1000 and anything else in this league. I have read so many reviews and am finding it hard. Are these pens too big? Where it's not comfortable to write? I am a software consultant and love taking notes with a fountain pen in a corporate environment. I am left handed and enjoy a sheaffer white dot. Hope to hear from you soon. Cheers
That's a tough choice because those are very different pens. I haven't used a Milord. The 1911 Large is normal sized but not a piston filler. The 149 and M1000 are big, but whether they are too big clearly depends on the size of your hands. I personally prefer the M1000 to the 149 because of the former's superb nib.
Thank you Stephen now my italix will be an italic.it really is amazing to write with an italic sooooo smooth much smoother in my opinion. Thank you and sorry for high jacking the comments to something unrelated
Yes, I'm one of those waiting for this pen a lng time ago, one of my favorite pens. I got the M800 (it's like montblanc 146 size right? more or less) But mine came in a really big box like a box for jewels. I have to say i dont like my box cause you can not take the pen out easly, you have to, almost use force due to the string holding the pen. My pelikan is a beawty, i have the golden pelikan at the top of the cab contrary to others that ahve it in black... why is that?
"I need blood!! LOL! Anyhow, you have one beautiful pen there SB. In my opinion Pelikan pens are among the best writers out there, if not the very best. What 2-3 pens are the ones you use the most and what inks, i.e., brand/color do you use the most? I'm interested to know.
After your review I got the same pen from missing pen (great service by the way) with medium nib. Great pen but a gusher I would say and very wet. What would you recommend for daily use? Greetings from Turkey!
sbrebrown Hi again. All my friends that use fountain pen think it writes a very thick line even with a medium nib. Is M1000 medium nib thicker than a traditional nib?
i m looking for parker 75 thuya mottled brown fountain pen which matches my parker 95,parker 75 milleraies 14k gold fountain pen which matches my parker arrow...
Stephen, I think than it is the ultimate pen. Seriously. I will buy it from Rolf, when I got the money. I have one M250 (medium nib) with MB Toffee Brown, and it is my favourite pen.
congatulations on the gift! Thats quite a beauty. Cant wait to get one myself. BTW, would you mind giving me the ebay name of the gentleman that carries lots of Pelikans that you have commented on before? Happy New Year, Dr.
Wonderful pen . When you do the writing sample I did not hear any sound between pen and paper like other and that's mean M1000 is incredible smooth . I have M 400 with medium italic I ever keep it in my pen box more than 4 month without open it and when I open again it still have a good ink flow ....lwow
I have watched a lot of your videos and they are excellent. Are you from the U.S.A or U.K.? You look better in the video without the beard. Can you tell me a few points on how to get vintage pens repaired/serviced? A Merry Christmas to you and to your family.Regrds, Swaminathan from Chennai,India.
I just happened to be in the market for the Pelikan M1000 so I enjoyed your review, and I decided to order from missing-pen.de. His prices on this pen are $50 less than anybody else on eBay..I wonder how he does it..maybe it's cheaper to buy them in Germany..anyway great tip..you should get a commission.:)
I too have both a pelikan 805 and a 1000 the 805 being the pen I measure all the others against, its that good. And I too have and have previously owned Mont Blancs. In my experience with the 149, 146(various models) and the Boheme they are inferior to the Pelikan in several respects. Reliability, they all fail to start up and skip too often. I write with a light hand and this is a particular source of annoyance for me particularly with such an expensive pen.
This really sounds like an interesting hobby but I don't really get the point of it, can anyone explain what is so good about these high quality pens? Thank you :)
You've answered your own question: their high quality. It's about the joy of writing with a really well-made instrument, just like some people like driving expensive cars.
Wow, that's like a perfect pen! I think I'm drooling... And it deserves a more interesting ink than waterman Florida Blue: maybe something like Bilberry or Orange Indien?
Yes, it is a big pen, for sure. I have one, and it has real panache. However, I'm not sure I like the extreme flexibility of the nib. It is beautiful and ornate, and being much larger than an 800 nib, there is more engraving on it than on any other Pelikan. I actually haven't had the best experiences with mine, and I tend to prefer my 800-size and my Polar Lights (600 size) Pelikan. Maybe I'll have to give my 1000 another chance or have it tuned-up a little.
What a nice way to start the new year ;) This is an amazing pen. It is a classic, and I think rightly so. When I'm ready for a Pelikan, I'll buy the M1005 of course (since I'm a clear demonstrator addict) but nonetheless, I appreciate the M1000 as well. Btw what happened to lacouronneducomte? After your review I thought to go for window shopping and I was surprised to see that the web store account is suspended! Enjoy the pen and happy new year! :-)
well it is a great pen that i was knowing but i have th say that i don't like the box...i think it's a bit too phew for a pen of this range wich supposed to concurence the MB149
and paper combination I use.
Got the green one finally, the craftsmanship and built are awesome. The green stripped barrel is a refreshing change from the usual black ones.
You are a machine. Way to end the year, please don't stop making these videos... ever. I was looking for the bonus video but then I realized maybe this is the bonus video. Have a Happy New Year.
Bravo, Stephen! An outstanding review for a truly outstanding pen. Now I have to decide if I will get one and let it supplant my M800
Beautiful pen. Nib comparison with desk pen nib - 1000 is almost scary. Another great review. Thanks!
Why they never made the M1000 in a red-striped pattern, I will never understand....I love red, so I bought the M800 in red stripes instead :)
Anyway, thank you for yet another wonderful pen review. You really are the RUclips Pen Review Master, and the time and effort you put into these things is truly appreciated. May 2013 be a good year for you! Oh, and any New Year's resolutions you'd care to share with us? ;)

How do you like this compared to your mont blancs?
Still considering should I get a M400 White Tortoise?
I rarely get white pen, after all white pens get dirty easily
What is the difference between m800 and m1000 except size which varies about an inch or so
Magnificent ! I am getting the m800...Thanks !
You're welcome.

So if you could be so kind to tell me what to order which would be the same cut :) also without tipping material does the nib wear faster ?
Hello is there anywhere on the pen that can be used to find out what style of pelikan pen it is? I have acquired a pelikan pen that is very similar to yours it says pelika souveran germany on the rim of the cap
what fountain pen should i get with has a piston converter if my budget is £30.00?
So I got the twsbi, I hope its good like you said, but Im not sure what ink to get because I dont have any, I got waterman blue, but what inks would you recomend?
stephen can i use permenant blue ink when i used washable ink and did not wash it out?
Could you please tell me where you get your brass shims and buffsticks?
Would you say this is the smoothest pen you own? if not what is?
I love my m1000 in extra fine. It was on black Friday special at cult pens. It’s by far my favourite pen, with its unique soft extra fine nib
Hi Mr.Brown, I find that the current sheaffer ball pen refills which have a round plastic
cork at the end of the refill do not fit the old sheaffer ball pens where the plastic cork is tapered. The old refills are no longer available. Any suggestion, please? Regards
Swaminathan from Chennai,India
Email Sheaffer or maybe check Ebay?

Thanks a bunch. Would you say the lamy safari is smoother than the faber castell loom or not?, just curious. I quite like Kevin's pens though :)
how do you compare the smoothness of the m1000 and a Sailor Pro gear?
+Viz Art The M1000 is smoother for sure.
i'm getting one next week but can't decide which one, the black with gold trim and nib, the black with rodium trim and nib or the green stripped one shown here.
Because I realise that parker, sheaffer etc. pens are exclusive in a way that they only produce ball points, mechanical pencils, FPs and rollerballs in fancy finishes. However, pelikan also makes drawing pencils, colour pencils etc..
What pen would you recommend someone who is 16 years old and is very decent.(I do have some experience with fountain pens).
I am asking to be specific because it states Stub (by the way found one in BB stub) but I want my parsons essential (amber which is back ordered) to be that cut,
Happy new year to all and may all your pens be fountain !
Are pelikan fountain pens branded? Like how parker, sheaffer, montblanc etc are branded(I think)?
Just ordered my first pen, an M805. I hope it's not too small, I was contemplating an M1000. I heard the nibs are very different between the two though. The 1000 being a bit springy and wet. Should get it next week. Enjoy your videos.

I did buy a Montegrappa Parola with a fine nib. Very smooth, nice writing, and great style.
Hey Stephen. Excellent review as always. I'm looking forward to the shoot-out no doubt.
Can you please do an inkcyclopedia entry on diamine bilberry
Do you use the m1000 as a daily user?
dude where do you get the money for pens like this
***** phd dude.. i never know about that
If you can get your hands on the Pelikan Polar Lights and also the Niagara, both Special Editions 640s, great feel and perfect size
Nice review! I was wondering is you could review the Faber-Castell Ambition. Don't know is you own the pen, but I can't seem to find a lot of info about it online. Keep up the great video and happy New-Years!
Do you think I should buy the M1000 or the M860 polar light?
That depends on your hand size: the M1000 is definitely a large pen.
Im gonna buy one of those, my choice is between the m1000 and the m800 (found this one in blue
it's a bit different, yes.
Stephen, after I watched this review I bought this pen and I can tell you. I absolutely LOVE IT. By the way what paper do you use in this review? I guess it is Clairefontaine?
Nope, this is actually Rhodia paper. i'm glad you enjoy the pen!
Can you make a video in which you discuss "things to look out for when buying an expensive fountain pen "(gold nib, nice material, etc.)
What is the smoothest pen you own?
Hi, Mr.Brown,
Wish you and your family A Very Happy,Peaceful and Prosperous New Year.
Regards, Swaminathan, Chennai,India
Thank you very much: I wish you the same!
They never seem to run out of ink.)
Because of my budget, I went for the M800 with an OM nib. The M1000 was just a bit too costly.
Excellent choices. Thank you sir.
Thanks. I thought that might be him. BTW, why not review an American Classic... Esterbrook?
This is my second time watching this particular video (I'm thinking of getting a Pelikan pen soon, maybe a Sailor; no idea yet), and I still don't get it. What's the "obvious joke" you mentioned around 03:20? It's been bugging me :P
Dear Steven, I am watching all your videos from start to finish as I really enjoy them. I was wondering if you could recommend a few pens of a decent quality for under £20 sterling. This would be much appreciated and could you ask the Professor to draw some monuments and buildings, I would love to see his unique style portraying this. Best regards, Adam
The Lamy Safari comes to mind.
Fair enough, thanks, I have the vista, is there much difference?
adam clark No, it's very similar. For a little more, youcan look into an Italix Parson's Essential.
I will have a look. Many thanks. Adam
But price varies significantly . I dont see any point of buying a m1000 over m800 because the size only varies by an inch or so
Yeah!! Finally see you have this ALL IMPORTANT must have pen!
My, my, that's a big pen you've got there, Stephen! ;)
Great pen - the 2B suits your handwriting very well. :)
I think the M1000 is perfect for daily use.
sbrebrown Hi again.
"nibbage", I really appreciate your subtle and under the radar wit
Stephen, I think than it is the ultimate pen. Seriously. I will buy it from Rolf, when I got the money. I have one M250 (medium nib) with MB Toffee Brown, and it is my favourite pen.
I really love the M1000.
missing-pen.de
congatulations on the gift!
Sorry, I meant an actual piston fill pen like a pelikan m200 or twsbi diamond 580.
I have watched a lot of your videos and they are excellent. Are you from the U.S.A or U.K.? You look better in the video without the beard. Can you tell me a few points
on how to get vintage pens repaired/serviced? A Merry Christmas to you and to your family.Regrds, Swaminathan from Chennai,India.
I'm from The Netherlands. For vintage repair, check out the Fountain Pen Hospital.
I got to say that I feel this pen is better than the MB149.
That's my opinion too, but don't let the MB fans hear you :-).
You can't even buy spare parts or nibs for the MB 149 as it has to go back to be serviced by MB.
I plan to buy Pelikan M1000, but with M or B nib.
I was looking for a branded pen with two tone gold nib with twist off cap etc., and the pelikan m400 caught my eye.
Waiting to your review M1000 Vs 149 ! ! !
Beautiful pen, happy new year! :)
This really sounds like an interesting hobby but I don't really get the point of it, can anyone explain what is so good about these high quality pens?
Thank you :)
You've answered your own question: their high quality. It's about the joy of writing with a really well-made instrument, just like some people like driving expensive cars.
sbrebrown Ah..
I agree. I'm also a watch collector and I appreciate the craftsmanship and materials used in making pens like watches.
Can we purchase things in the fountain pen network?
For 'sing' I meant an emotional pull towards the object!
Souverän is pronounced a bit differently in German: The 'ä' is more open just like in the word 'air'.
Lovely pen, Stephen. Have you seen any Chinese pens that imitate it?
No, the queen stands alone :-).
This will be my next pen for certain :)
