    I grew up in Minnesota. My family is Norwegian. I grew up with only salt and pepper as seasoning and lots of onions and potatoes for our veggies. When I got older I introduced garlic and hot sauce to my parents. It was like I sinned🤦Love your channel. Congrats ! Your famous!

    Also, Ronald, you still look 28 years old. I think I need to look at your drivers license to believe your stated age.

      Samis were treated really badly, especially btw 1850 and the early 1970s. Before 1850 they were not so much exposed to assimiliation because the idea of ethnic unity (nation) as the basis for a state (nation-state) hadn't had its breakthrough yet. Before the 1850s priests going to sami areas had to learn sami language. After the 1850s samis were forced to speak norwegian (sami language only survived in the homes and in the læstadian - Google - parishes), same for finnish-speaking minorities (kvæn).
      The "re-awakening" of sami-identity started with a children TV-show in the 80s called "Ante" and it grew into pride with the Alta-river protests in the early 80s leading to the establishment of the Sami-parlament.
      The sami-population Ronald belongs to was really hard affected by this. They lacked the traditional identity-marker of sami culture: raindeer herding. They mostly lived in permanent houses and lived from fishing, making their identity compared to norwegians somewhat "blurred". The only "force" supporting them and appreciating their language and culture was the puritan christian "læstadian" movement.

      Sami and Norwegians are actually closely related. Both peoples are descendants of the Stone Age people who migrated up when the ice retreated. It is confirmed by both archaeological, linguistic and DNA findings. Later, other groups migrated in and mixed with the original population, and the Sami and Norwegian ethnic groups were formed on the spot, one in the north and the other in the south. In the north, a large part of the old language survived (a large part of the Sami language is of unknown origin), but in the south the language disappeared. Only small remnants survived as part of the Norwegian language.

    Ronald, the old pictures of the Sami remind me so much of the American Indians! Living in Yurts/Tepees look strikingly similar to the old ways of our indigenous people in North America. Good for you for being proud of your heritage and bringing the oppression of them to the forefront. Norwegians should rejoice in the addition of the Sami culture to the modern Norway. I am finally getting a chance to watch this, having saved it for " later viewing " some time ago.
    I have watched several of your RUclips videos and figured very early on that you were mixing valuable information with comedy, which is a very good idea by the way, but I am surprised by the " back story " both of you guys reveal here. I thought that I knew a small bit about the Sammi (sp?) but I seriously under estimated what it was like. It seems to vaguely resemble the way of life of the American Indian, and unfortunately, the Sammi people were (and still are ?) treated like the American Indian. And out of that darkness comes much of your humor.

    Omgs, why wasn't I informed about this new video! Two weeks of ignorance has passed already (well, a lot more than that, actually). So this was a long video interview and a good one. You know, I would like to know more about the Sami, and maybe even what it's like to be Sami, much like the Norway theme you two have been doing. Really, if you guys ever want a change of culture misrepresentation, that might be a good avenue to try going down? All I ever hear about Sami here is the music (which I have sought out and am thrilled about), reindeer meatballs, cool sweaters and more reindeer. The bits like the home ownership rules and stuff I think needs to be told. People are maybe opening up to hearing about this now? Maybe even the French! Naaaaaahhh. But the Fins would be interested. I think we should get Norway some good Columbian flavours though, don't you? Mmmmm! Latin American food and music is magnificent.

It was great hearing a bit more about your friendship in all these years and your fun prickly dynamic. My grandson caught you doing something and your face turned green. He wanted to know what in hell was I watching?! I hope to get him to watch more with me. He's a gamer so you know. Other than work and chores and FOOD (he's very skinny) and an occasional date, he never leaves his setup🙄 Idk if you guys have lots of gamers there but it's a HUGE thing here in the States. My thing now is RUclips since I can't work anymore so I'm not the best role model lol. When I WAS he was too young to notice much. I love kids and animals too and scary stuff which he hates. My granddaughter is a scholar. Always. She graduated top of her class Summa Cum Laude. Didn't want Valedictorian tho. She earned a 4 year ride to a private college here on a beautiful old style campus but chose to stay at home. We're very happy about that🌞 Her boyfriend is also top of class on a scholarship and he stays with us every weekend. My oldest grandson moved away with his girl after he did some college so we don't see him much. He's not far just always on the run like the young. Can't wait to see more crazy vids from you guys! More about your food shopping? Also you never did a pets video yet! Pets and all your wild critters. I'm dying to know. And more about child life. I think it's much better for kids there. The bit about how Norwegian's see themselves as part, or not, or Europe was the most interesting bit. I thought the English were the only ones that don't see themselves as being part of Europe. I grew up going to a cottage in the mountains in the Drakensburg on week-ends that reminds me a lot of your cabin minus the skiing. No electricity and water piped from a stream into a tank so you had to be really careful not to use too much in case it ran out.

    Mots talking about being embarrest when norweigns go on holiday hits home with me. Australians are allowed to drink and party but yhere are rules to stop it gettibg out of hand. When we go to bali those rules are more lax (because they honestly didnt think they needed to regulate idiots) and drunk australians in bali embarress me no end. I appologise to every beautiful balanese person.

I really enjoyed learning more about you both and hearing your story, and I had no idea about Sami peoples did you say your mother was Sami also? so was she born in South America but of Sami decent? I really had no idea that the labor party of Norway did such things, all we really hear about in USA is the right wingers saying you guys are bad bad bad and the left saying you're perfect in everyway and have a perfect life lol but we all learn a lot from watching your show and we come to the realization no country is truly perfect(although having a good Social Welfare system could help a great deal) again thanks for your videos they have got me and my husband through many boring days stuck in a house in this pandemic!

    I learned to read Norwegian from watching television with subtitles but wouldn’t dare attempt to speak it as a non-native speaker to a Norwegian because they are very particular about pronunciation (boksmal) and can even figure out your regional origin by your accent/pronunciation. Norway is a very nice country. And they have a lot to be proud of. I live in the USA. It can be nice here if you live in a good State. I feel like I live in one of the better states (New Hampshire). But too many States I'm honestly happy I don't live in. For example, I'm happy I don't live in the West Coast States, Minnesota, etc., bc they are too socialist. Massachusetts (to the south of us) is Socialist also...but I don't have to go there. In Texas the power grid shut down...but in New Hampshire it works fine. I suppose we must have windmills somewhere in our State...but i'm not sure where. We do have a nuclear power plant though :) I'm glad King George II granted New Hampshire a Colonial Charter :) As for food I think New England food is the best anywhere.

    • @tmmy770
      @tmmy770 3 года назад +1

      @@bethknight4436 By saying we are both Capitalist and Socialist only tells half of the story. I disagree that nobody is "suggesting anything different." It's obvious that some states are more socialist than others. Look at the West Coast States, for example. Also NY, MA, MD, CT, IL and several others are more socialist on the matrix. While other States, such as Florida, SC, the Dakotas, Texas, W.VA, and my state of NH clearly lean towards the conservative side. This should be fairly clear to most people. Just as some examples, which States have the highest taxes? Which States have the most crime? Which states have the most corruption? Which States had the riots and looting? Why does it cost 20x more money to rent a uhaul out of some States than out of others? Which States have better schools? Why are many business leaving some States and not others? So, we can disagree on this one.

    It’s not like the headlines because it SOUNDS like it’s some sort of paradise, but I think it being ranked the happiest place to live (based on what I’ve studied) has to do with the way Norwegians are brought up and their perspectives and expectations in life. They don’t make a fuss, they don’t have high expectations or think of each other as better or worse than one another, they don’t go to restaurants and expect the royal treatment. They expect a basic, normal life and deal with any issues as they come, and don’t get overly upset over things. It’s a people who expect what they get, if that makes sense?

    Thank you Roland for explaining about the Sami degradation and family experiences. Now I want to read more about the Sami. In Canada we had the same degradation and stigma with our First Nation/indigenous people....white men rounded up their children and were lied to and paid for a better education but children never saw their families again and were abused and their traditions and language beaten out of them..very sad 😥... and moved them off their land...long story and today stigmas against these people and profiling. Thx for sharing ...my grandfather apparently lived with a Sami family for part of his life...

I first went to Oslo in 2018 and was surprised at the food in supermarkets or maybe the lack of selection and items we in the UK are familiar with I did find it difficult the second time was much better and I could put a meal together which I would enjoy with available items. I found it took time for people to get used to me on the campsite but then they started coming over and wanting to talk to me and be friendly. ❤️❤️❤️
