It's probably the same thing that happend in Taif in 630 where muslims attacked the city because the city worshipped Al-Lat(Idol) and didn't want to convert to Islam until they were forced to do so.

It was very compelling, so I decided to see what Islam had to say about the matter. _So you see those in whose hearts is disease hastening into [association with] them, saying, "We are afraid a misfortune may strike us." But perhaps Allah will bring conquest or a decision from Him, and they will become, over what they have been concealing within themselves, regretful._
_O you who have believed, take not those who have taken your religion in ridicule and amusement among the ones who were given the Scripture before you nor the disbelievers as allies. And fear Allah , if you should [truly] be believers._
_Say, "O People of the Scripture, do you resent us except [for the fact] that we have believed in Allah and what was revealed to us and what was revealed before and because most of you are defiantly disobedient?"_
_And you see many of them hastening into sin and aggression and the devouring of [what is] unlawful. How wretched is what they have been doing._
_Say, "O People of the Scripture, you are [standing] on nothing until you uphold [the law of] the Torah, the Gospel, and what has been revealed to you from your Lord." And that which has been revealed to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in transgression and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people._
_Indeed, those who have believed [in Prophet Muhammad] and those [before Him] who were Jews or Sabeans or Christians - those [among them] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteousness - no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve._
_We had already taken the covenant of the Children of Israel and had sent to them messengers. Whenever there came to them a messenger with what their souls did not desire, a party [of messengers] they denied, and another party they killed._
*PS: But whoever repents after his wrongdoing and reforms, indeed, Allah will turn to him in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.*

The Almighty Creator does not want worship in chorus, as much as he wants harmony of action by All. A unified assault against limiting and destructive ideas is the warfare the faithful should take up. The material plain, the material dimension is where unity can be expressed to thwart the limiting and dark ideas set. Perfect example of this is how Jesus approached the Samaritan woman at the water well. She is surely as entitled to feel equal with anyone and everyone else from the day she was born, as this is a natural right, a natural law which all know to be true and just.
