    I worked tremendously hard on this video. However, some animations might not be 100% accurate as the accident occurred just four days ago, and there is not much data available.     As an active A330 captain and having flown the A320 for more than 7 years allow me to make following remarks:
    1. During the first approach the aircraft was obviously quite high (possibly also fast) and the gear seems to have been forgotten up apparently as a result of focusing too much on making the landing and avoiding a go around (which could only be just a little embarrassing and nothing more). Approaching high (and fast) can happen in everyday operation as a result of accepting shortcuts by ATC or just simply mismanaging the approach. The safest course of action for that is to cancel the approach and request new vectoring and not force the approach and landing.
    2. No pilot makes a belly landing without first completing the relevant checklists and informing the tower. The warnings were for some reason ignored (continuous repetitive chime and most probably also the “TOO LOW GEAR” which by the way cannot be cancelled unless the gear is lowered or a go around performed).
    3. After watching a video of a runway inspection it appears that the aircraft touched down with its engines 3 times before going around.
    4. As a result of the engines scraping the runway, it seems they got damaged and failed after a while leading to a dual engine loss as also evidenced by the extension of the RAT (Ram Air Turbine) which also comes out automatically if the two engine driven generators are lost.
    5. On the second approach the landing gear was down as seen in some videos (so no malfunction) and the aircraft crashed with a very high pitch up attitude which implies it was very near a stall (roughly around 100 knots) obviously in an attempt to delay the crash as much as possible. It is very possible that the gear was lowered quite early after the go around and before the engine failure(s). This explains why the aircraft struggled to climb as with only one engine operating (assuming one failed first) and the gear down the aircraft climb performance is seriously affected. Finally, had the gear remained up, the aircraft might have made it to a more open space near the airport if not to the runway. The gliding performance with gear up is around 3NM/1000ft compared to gear down which is around 2NM/1000ft (meaning that for every loss of 1000ft of altitude the aircraft travels 3 and 2 nautical miles respectively-/1NM=1852 meters).
    All this is of course hypothetical and we have to wait for the official accident report to find out what really happened.

      Very interesting. Thank you for sharing this. Another video on RUclips by someone called blancolirio shows the graphs of an altitude of 10,000 feet four minutes prior to landing, and a descent rate that briefly reaches 7000 feet per minute at an altitude of 2000 feet!! The approach showed speeds of 220-255 knots, with a speed of 210 knots at the runway threshold. Could the workload and stress associated with this type of wild ride explain him disregarding the chime and not processing the verbal gear warning? It's the only thing I could think of.

      I have been asking around about this very thing. The moment I saw the video I told my wife "That plane was stalling", then as the news of the engine hits came out, I looked at it again and I wondered what the gear was doing down during a glide.
      I don't know if keeping the gear up would have given them the 1300 meters of glide necessary, also they were far from the apex of the racetrack (looked a bit earlier than the final turn) but at that point, even sliding across the runaways would have been better than coming down, nose up, in a populated area. The pilot sounded calm and in control, but I suspect the cockpit was blaring alarms and they weren't thinking straight.
      Bizarre.

      Hmm, good thinking, but it could be possible that the a320 was flying too fast for the gears to extend, maybe it has a system preventing it from being extended at high speeds due to the risk of the gears being ripped off by the wind

      Absolutely..Just like everything else in Pakistan, most of the pilots are fake, as confessed by their Civil Aviation minister in Parliament..Many have fake licenses, and others have bribed their way to the license, without fulfilling the eligibility criteria...Pilots are hired based on their political connections - not on skills and performance. Europeans were right to ban all Pakistan pilots, as you never know if he's an auto rickshaw driver converted overnight to be a pilot

    I am a young flyer and during one of my flights From Hyderabad to Delhi in India, the weather was harsh and pilot took 3 go arounds to land the plan and everyone was cheering for the successful landing but no one was disappointed by the delay. There is no shame in failed landing, life before anything else.

      As an experienced flyer, I think you flew in the months of July or June , the weather around IGI airport stays that way most of the time. They usually round above the air till ATC gives clearance

      @@vipulkaushal1597 oh I remember the turbulence I experienced in Bangalore to Jaipur flight. I looked at my dad and our eyes said “that’s it”. Everyone started praying and a complete silence took over. I could feel the plane going down so fast. But after some minutes, the captain announced that the situation is under control. I almost cried when we landed safely. Mad respect for the pilots who keep calm and manage the situation under so much stress.

    "No final word on what caused the crash?" How about "stupidity?" It's a word never used in aviation crash reports but is entirely fitting in many cases. Air France 447 would fully qualify for its use...and many others.

      AF447 was more complex, and there were some valuable lessons to be learnt from that accident. The FAA actually changed the way they teach stall recovery and updated the airman certification standards as a result of that accident. This one, on the other hand, was caused by a series of inexplicably dumb decisions, and when the final report comes out, I doubt there will be any causal factors that could not have been prevented by knowledge that is already commonly available to everyone. Simply put, the pilots were just stupid as f... A total waste, so unnecessary.

      @clivewsm You are correct, the gear disagree warning can be heard in the ATC audio. It’s a very distinguished noise that can it be canceled by the pilot like other audio cues. This audio message would have been active followed by the “too low, gear warning” once the got in close proximity to the ground. The pilots had to be very aware of their situation which is why it’s inconceivable that they didn’t advise ATC.

      @@priscamolotsi He didn't realize that the landing gear were not down unitl it scraped (It happened because he didn' follow the protcols) and later most probably he was afraid of the repercussion.

      @@frankie3591 They were not following protocols and were using non standard methods to land in the first attempt which in turn would have caused a lot of error warnings and they would have missed the Landing Gear warning . BTW where are you from ?

If I start to drive my car without seat belt, the warning light flashes and the audible bell will kill me before an accident can. Now don't planes have that? Beep beep beep....Terrain Too low?       They didn‘t attempt a belly landing. They weren‘t aware that the gear hadn‘t extended, because they were so focused on somehow fixing the messed up approach. Gear probably didn‘t extend due to overspeed from the steep dive... ATC should not have cleared them to land, when they were too high (and he knew it). And they themselve should have taken the go around vectors they were offered by ATC. As always a fatal chain of human errors, hybris, over self-esteem, bad cockpit communication, power hierarchy (why didn‘t the pilot monitoring call for a go around?) has ultimately led to this totally unnecessary loss of lives.

    It wasn’t a belly landing from the pilots perspective. They just saw the landing gear lever was down, but somehow these drunk pilots kept ignoring all the alarms going off. They even ignored ATC when told to turn left heading for being too high and they were travelling too fast, hence why the landing gear didn’t deploy. A lot of comments here from people saying why they didn’t tell ATC they were coming in for a belly landing, but that was never their attention. They assumed the gears were down. ATC wouldn’t allow a plane to land on belly without confirming their checklist and getting emergency vehicles on standby and pouring foam on the runway for belling landing. These pilots were absolutely 100% at fault and they ignored all alarms

      Wow, exactly my conclusions. Only don't think pilots were drunk. They didn't fly in a while due to Covid lockdown, and staying at home means more sex than they can handle in their age.

      No that pilot was tired due to consecutive flights. Pakistanis never drink like indians. And it was a fault in plane which confused and tensed him. So never do asumptions like that. No one will kill his own life in such cases.

      @@lailakhan6104 This was their first flight of the day after a lengthy lockdown. Besides ignoring altitude, they failed to see if 3 landing gear down and locked lights were on and low terrain warnings. Tried to cover up by going airborne but crashed instead.

      The A320 has a sensor letting pilots know that they are too low without gear. That alarm didn’t sound. Something was amiss with the plane as well.

      What hypocrisy. On one hand saying "Oh we're so sorry and we're grieving", on the other hand supporting a guy who advertises this under #aviationmemes on Instagram. On top the blame put on pilots and controllers is extremely disrespectful when there's no preliminary report ready. Especially since the dead pilots don't even have a chance to defend themselves.     No pilot would knowingly make a "belly landing" without declaring an emergency (PAN or Mayday) notifying the airport and requesting emergency crews to be available. I have been on an aircraft that had gear problems and the flybys, the cycling of landing gear, the copilot visiting the cabin to look thru to see the gear....all takes time...and we didn't just "go for it". This "initial descent and landing" is problematic on many levels. Of note is that the airspeed should be assessed at gear down -- the A320 will not allow the gear to come down at speeds above a certain level to keep the gear and panels from being ripped off... the issue is not what happened on the go-around, its what happened leading up to the decision or lack of a decision to put the plane down on the engines...

      Yeah these pilots were really bad at following protocols, I think the gear may have not come down because of their ignorance of their incorrect glideslope leading to a much steeper decent which might have stressed the automation of the A320. I really think it might’ve been a training problem. I can bet my money that when the investigation is done, the main cause will be pilot error

    Rest in peace all those who lost their lives. Based on the information in this video, this is pilot error. For a start the approach was not stable, they should have discontinued the approach and asked for more track miles to lose altitude. Second, after the landing gear failed to extend they had a choice of either discontinuing the approach/going around to hold so they could figure out why that happened or using the manual gear extension - there was absolutely no need to attempt a belly landing at that stage. Once the belly landing attempt had floated outside of the touchdown zone, they should have executed a balked landing. Seems like poor decision making and failure management all the way down which unfortunately cost them and most of their passengers their lives.

      In this case there was no choice. They were more than the half way mark. It all goes to explain, how important decent planning is. One you leave cruise altitude, constant check of altitude and airspeed is necessary and immediate corrections need to be made. We need to wait till the official report comes out. It would be heartless to blame the pilots before that.

    Most crashes to my knowledge are preventable and I get the feeling this would have come back to the pilots for not letting ATC know they had an issue with the landing gear, not declaring an emergency and coming in a lot lower and slower first time around when engines were still fine.
    And after a failed belly landing and 2 engine strikes, had ATC been properly informed, they would probably have known the risks of a go around after striking both engines...

    When pilot went for belly landing in 1st attempts then how could he go for a go around after damaging the engines after touching it to the ground?😶 Earlier it was a technical fault with the plane but pilot's decision for goaround killed them all. Its a pilot fault & i mean its common sense that you have got only 1 attempt in belly landing bcz your engines will get crashed obviously.

    There are at least three reasons of this crash that I can deduct after watching this video.
    1- The pilot ignored the warnings from the ATC to lower the altitude.
    2- The technical flaw in the landing gear.
    3- Pilot's decision to do a go-around after the engines had scrapped the runway.
    IMO the pilot should've gone ahead with the belly landing instead of attempting a go-around approach.

      Atc and pilot conversation doesn't show even once that the pilot tried telling the tower about the landing gear. If not 'mayday' I believe atleast 'pan pan pan' declaration was warranted here. The pilot was like "Meh, no landing gear, no big deal. I got this". I'm baffled!

    Just finished your video & I’m still stunned that in this situation, the pilot chose to maintain higher altitudes-than atc requested.......utterly unacceptable, and one of several fateful decisions & actions the crew made. Some clearly resulted in damage to the aircraft; the remaining causing the subsequent crash & 97 fatalities.
    (This is of course, simply my opinion, based on what’s described as “limited info”, but it seems pretty clear to me, w/45 years of aeronautical accident & safety study & experience).
    Thank you for another excellent rendition, and well-produced video!

    It happened near my home, about 1 km distance. There was a huge cloud of smoke, when we went there, plane crashed in a stray street. At the end of this street was a school. Luckily it was too late and students must be empty at this time. On Friday schools here usually goes off around 12 pm. It was last Friday of Ramzan and most of the people are at home at this day, luckily didn't cause much damage to residents.
    People of karachi went to help the nearby residents right after the emergency response teams finishes the work, they supplied food immediately.
    There was emergency alert at hospitals because of crashing in residential area, called almost all ambulances and fire brigade in the city.

      @@crand20033 It's believed they were travelling too fast for the gear to deploy when they selected, the gear lever was in the down position, but the gear was not actually down and locked. This possibly led to confusion for both of the flight crew, as there is not just the pilot in command, but also his second there to check things and ensure checklists are followed.
      If the gear lever was cycled once speed was more acceptable, the gear would have dropped and deployed.
      I don't understand how they could ignore the gear alarms, and flashing light indicator that would appear on both sides. The pilot also declared he was comfortable on approach which means all settings should be right for landing configuration including gear.
      There is also a potential user-interface problem here with gear lever selectors that is however the same on just about every aircraft. A short glance will show the physical gear lever in the down position, but this is clearly NOT the same as the gear actually being down and locked. Ideally, this lever would return to the un-set position if unable to deploy as yet another indication that gear hasn't deployed.

    This is the most absurd, surreal accident I' ve ever seen so far, in all aspects. Crew performance, tower lack of attitude and all the awkward circumstances. Both, pilots and airline management must be deeply investigated (recruitment, formation, safety standarts, etc) and , if its the case, immediately prohibited from flying and responsables sent to jail. Now, an adjacent aspect:
    Over the two last decades pilots turned into "flight system's operators" and real piloting skills are being lost more and more, year after year, as they are now formed "ab initio" by the airline's academies. They are no longer "Aviators". That's why we may encounter a 21 year old co-pilot, or even a captain of 25, because they have no previous experience in the air force of, at least, eight years facing challenging situations.
    Comment updating- we now heard about pilot's fake licenses. That overpasses anything we could imagine, so my new comment is; NO COMMENTS!!!

      In case of belly landing, shouldn't there be firefighters in place for the inevitable fire that would ensue? The pilot seemed too relaxed; there was no mention to control tower that landing gears were not working, and Mayday! Mayday! was sounded off just almost immediately before the crash. I'm no pilot but what kind of pilot was that? By the way this video was presented, it seemed the passengers were not aware of any emergency situation. I don't know which was better or worse - passengers not panicking and then - Bam! - everybody's dead, without a prayer or last good-byes.

      The report also says, that they activated the thrust reversers on their first landing attempt.
      Thus it was a horrible wrong decision to initiate a goaround afterwards...
      What is known from this prliminary report the crew was not using correct callouts, not regarding what they were doing in the cockpit and at least making horribly wrong decisions...

    And it's hard for me to believe they'd do a go around after knowingly hitting the engines.
    More likely they landed unknowingly with gear up , felt the impact not exactly knowing what was going on and then went around.

I think even the ATC was confused that they wanted to go ahead with the approach given their speed and altitude. I can't believe experienced pilots like that could get that caught up to ignore those warnings but that seems to be what happened (if I remember right the captain had like 14,000 hours in that plane).

    The assumptions made in this video's captions do not match analysis from other sources - most likely they were too fast (diving to the runway) and the gear would not extend due to this. On the Airbus, you need to raise the gear lever and then lower it again when below the max speed.
    It's possible they lowered the gear lever and considered that to be "gear down" on the checklist, and then proceeded to belly land unintentionally, ignoring the gear warning beeps for whatever reason (maybe they thought it was a warning for something else - like overspeed because they were chasing the glideslope?)
    The skid marks on the runway also indicate that they floated for ages before touching down way past the usual touchdown point - another indication they were coming in way too fast. No way would they be coming in that fast intentionally with a gear failure, and without mentioning it to the tower. More likely they were just trying to get down, and figured they had enough stopping power with half of the runway behind them - and all that stress led them to completely miss the lack of "3 greens".
    It's also inexplicable that they would go around if they knew they were landing gear-up - why panic and go around if you are expecting the engines to scrape the runway?

      This is pretty much my theory too, except that they probably assumed the alarm was for decent rate, instead of overspeed. I see a LOT of landing videos where a perfectly good landing has a bunch of alarms that must be ignored by the crew. The airplane systems must in part be designed by LAWYERS. In other words, idiots.

      This gear behaviour is what I was missing in all the previous descriptions. This makes total sense, as it turns a "everyone in the cockpit ignored a massive glaring/blaring issue and did a series of bonkers things without telling anyone" in to a "crew was rushing to get down and flubbed one single gear procedure like we've seen a bunch of times before" situation.     They were at an airspeed in excess of 250k over the threshold, they also impacted the runway 3x. The flight crew flat screwed up, to high on approach and were diving at one point in excess of 7k fpm to try and catch the glide slope.
    This should have been a go around from the beginning, it's also likely they were to fast when they attempted to lower the gear and that's why it wouldn't extend.

      Yes! The fact that the engines contacted the runway 3 times without a tail strike definitely shows one, that the gear was up of course and also that the airspeed and ground speed was higher than normal after a very unstable approach that was way too high and way too fast. At the time that they selected gear down they must have been going above 250 kts but for some reason never rectified the fact that the gear wasn’t down yet!

      Red Diamond not sure where you are getting your information from, but ADSB data shows aircraft between 240-250kts across the threshold. Descent rate prior to the call at 3500ft was in excess of 3k/min and at times as high as 9k/min. They never intended belly land on the first attempt most likely never put the gear down. Evidenced by the pictures showing the gear down right before the crash. ATC wanting to vector the aircraft is further evidence that they thought he was to high and fast. Pilots remark that they were “comfortable” is more evidence towards the high and fast scenario. Finally if there was a known problem they would not have gone straight to a belly landing, rather they would have stayed in the air trouble shooting the problem first.
      Sad, very sad, but I doubt any investigation will show any mitigating circumstances.

    This is an unlikely scenario. There is no reason for the pilots to make a belly landing on purpose. This aircraft appears to have been high and fast on approach. The landing gear will not lower on this aircraft if it is flying too fast to safely lower it. That's why the alarm was going off. The pilots appeared to have ignored the alarm and did not check the gear position lights. They just assumed the gear was down when it was not. They proceeded to do in inadvertent belly landing. They should have stayed on the ground at that point. Instead they did a go around with disastrous results.

      The a320 has an hidraulic system just like most planes if the landing gear does not work the pilot has to release the hidraulics that will make the landing gear come down thanks to gravity this is clearly the pilots fault

    Three reasons why the crash was not caused by a malfunctioning landing gear on the first approach:
    1. The pilots didn’t communicate a problem with the landing gear. They did not announce a belly landing.
    2. They decided to go-around after touching the ground, which is non-sensical when attempting a belly landing.
    3. The gear did extend shortly before the crash.

    According to what we know so far, these are incredibly incompetent pilots. They didn't inform ATC of ANYTHING until it was far too late, and didn't call mayday until AFTER attempting the belly landing! And forcing a belly landing without doing proper checklist procedures is beyond a rookie move...getting the aircraft down SAFELY is always the first priority...

    1)The pilot had forgotten to lower the landing gear on first attempt ultimately leading to damaged engines
    2)why would you lower your altitude if you know your engine wont let you up again
    I believe lives could have been saved if there was an more experienced pilot on that flight
    RIP to those to who are not here its saddening that PIA flights have got worst in recent years
    If you travelling in or to pakistan please never consider flying in PIA

      My point exactly... what really happened was that stupid pilot forgot to engage landing gear at first landing attempt because he was too busy descending from high altitude and high speed with very short distance remaining. When he realized that landing gear is not open at touchdown, he raised the plane again to go around and make second attempt but engines were already damaged at that point.

      @@oksyar according to Blanco Oleareo that chiming thats going on when the pilot is talking to ATC is the landing gear warning chime, warninig the pilot that the landing gear isn't deployed. The pilot is having a calm radio transmission with ATC while all that chiming is going on in the cockpit, its not like the pilot forgot a simple step in the process.

    the reason the gear failed to deploy on the first landing attempt was because the A320 has built in sensors , which will not allow the gear to deploy if the speed is too fast.....this planes approach height was too high and its speed was much faster than its designated landing speed ...pilot was told to break off landing approach by ATC ( " left turn 180" / in the USA, ATC says " go around " ) but pilot reported back he was " comfortable " and continued to attempt the landing , damaging both engines .......very nicely done graphics.....

    So much pilot error sadly, all of these factors contributed to the incident. They likely could have successfully landed the aircraft on its belly had they stabilised the approach and communicated effectively/prepared.

      Agreed. From what information we have, this reeks of pilot incompetence. With all the warnings going off in the cockpit, a sane crew would have aborted the landing attempt, notified ATC of a problem, anything within SOP. Instead they tried to force the gear down by smashing the plane onto the runway without any flame retardants.

Unfortunately, it looks like some wrong decisions were made on the flight deck that day, and that's what caused the crash. Even if the original technical fault was caused by "Uneducated engineers" the pilots should have been able to handle it better.

If you were good from heart for someone innocent who you dont even know personally to make assumptions about them you wouldnt be saying such things 🙄 You cant expect good from bad. PLease if you dont have anything nice to say or have any knowledge of anything then dont come up for discussion. If you want to discuss about religious history maybe find a video where you can learn from. I dont believe you are here to learn anything from but just to hate. There are millions of videos on youtube but you come here to disrespect somebody else religion shows how disgusting your life must be.

    There was a nice good Lake of water on the approach line. Given that both Landing gear ( wheels) did not come down, a safer alternative was to land on water half way up the lake. In that case the first impact would be on water which will lessen fire+ prevent break up of aircraft. With that speed they would have skidded on top of water & ended up on shore of the lake. At least some ppl could have been saved.. If I were the Pilot I would have done that.

      They probably did not realise that the landing gear was not down. The speed was too high to deploy the landing gears. A belly landing would have worked fine if they had planned for it and informed the airport to have fire services ready. But even the landing speed was so high that they couldnt stop in time and instead they made a go-around

    When you have a problem, the thumb rule is to keep flying. That way you'll buy time. Land only when you're sure it's safe to land. This is something that is stressed upon in every pilot school and academy.
    So sad that this happened.

      I believe the plane's computer was in error and that it did not inform the pilots for landing gear error, or engine dead error.. otherwise he would have not landed the plane and even if he did he then would have used a 3 km long runway to his advantage, and cut his route short and make landing easily on a 2 km worth of runway , given his experience with an airliner.

      @@omairbinenam6337 From watching the video i think both the pilots knew that the landing gear is not *working* and still didn't inform on the radio and tried to land it anyway??!!

      @@dharmang yes you make sense too and judging from the initial conversation in the video between the ATC lahore and pilot, it seemed though the pilot was hesitant/shy of asking a simple question, in his own words... "chota sa question hai ager burra na minaye tau puchun" what I said and what you said both can be possible at the same time.
      in audio no alarm is heard other than the "ding ding ding" the pilot was calm all the way through until he said mayday , and even then he was sounding confused rather than being worried.. my hunch is that the plane visuals/audio alarms were deceptive ..
      Lets see how the final assessment turns out to be on this one.
