This is probably the best video on venture on the web (and I've seen a lot of videos). Chris has this wonderful talent to drive the major points in a simple to understand way. Awesome job and thank you for sharing your insights.

Well that would be impossible to do considering I'm in my late 50s and I'm more interested in investments that could set me up for retirement in my 60s, my goal is at least $2million.
@@DavidAntony-gq7id Very true, If you're looking for help building a retirement nest egg, you most likely want a certified financial planner with expertise in retirement planning. With the aid of a coach, I grew my reserve from $160k to almost $600k during this Red season.

Honestly the best video on VC that I've watched and I've watched a lot! So clear, so humble, and clearly just very experienced! Thank you, Chris! I hope you continue to create content like this (I'd pay for a substack-esque subscription too!)
This is fantastic Chris! I appreciate that you took the time to explain how a VC thinks and acts and what kind of companies are investable. I liked how you connected the dots between multiple eras of going from computing to semiconductors to internet. Thank you

Good overview but is there some video i can go to to learn the nitty gritty? Like how exactly venture firms do the valuations, the legal paperwork all that.
This was a very constructive class. Thank you for highlighting the differest steps deeply and in a simplified way. Question: When you raise a fund and LPs put in their money, does the payout come only once-at the end of the cycle e.g. 10 years; or does it come in stages e.g. once you exit different startups in the portfolio managed by the fund then the LPs receive their profits per exit? I'm asking this on the premise that one fund will invest in a portfolio of several startups.
From my understanding, it's usually when there's an IPO or exit or liquidation event, which can pressure companies to grow quickly so that they can generate a return for the firm. I think 7 years is typically the liquidation goal.
Thank you for this insightful masterclass! I found your idea of "first selecting the macro-trend to bet on" is intriguing and feels like a consulting approach. How has Drive Capital built systems for acknowledging these important trends? Is it purely based on experiences and expertise? Once again thanks, great video
Excellent video! Very valuable! I am preparing for an interview with a VC firm next week. The company invests in biotech and pharma and my background is in life sciences. I will have two hours to prepare a case for the partners. I would like someone point me to some resources (a video or an article) on valuation of pharma and biotech startups. It is still very shady for me. Thanks in advance
I love the way VCs justify their fees. The team is really expensive (mostly me and a few analysts and secretaries). Let me take $60 million off the table for that team. Harvard Business Review (as opposed to VC backed or reliant publications) states "We found that the overall performance of the industry is poor... The average fund... breaks even or loses money." The biggest problem is that you find out 10 years later whether your investment in a VC fund was a good one. VC returns are going to be wrecked as interest rates increase.
Good video, however in order to turn 300.000.000 into 1.500.000.000 within 10 years you would need about 17% compound interest p.a. Based on historical returns of the stock market / sp500 this is far from realistic

how do you get 300M->1.5B after 10 years? at 8% compounded that would only be 647M...you would need more like a 17.5% per annum return which is not possible in the public markets over that time period
