LIFE AT SEA LION ISLAND: ELEPHANT SEALS FIGHT

  • Life on the beach at Sea Lion Island (Falkland Islands) can be quite busy. Two males elephant seal (DAVID and MARIO) are all concentrated in competing and fighting over a harem of females, while researchers sneak on the back of one of them to get some good picture in order to estimate body size. Meanwhile, females elephant seals are busy taking care of their pups while killer whales just make their appearance waiting for their opportunity for a good meal.

      Yes, killer whales often patrol the beaches where elephant seals breed, waiting for a "snack" ;-)

      Eh eh eh...they are marked with hair dye. Once they have their names on it is possible to recognize them and hence study their behaviour without the need to get close.

    • @ElephantSealResearchGroup
      @ElephantSealResearchGroup  3 года назад +1

      They do also attack adult males if they have a chance (in particular when males follow females entering the water, close to shore), but the elephant seal males are usually able to escape on land if close enough, eventhough they usually have broken ribs and massive internal bleeding that kill them anyway. Most of the predation on males we observed ended up with male seal dying on land (so no dinner for the orcas)

    Why do the seals have names carved into them

    • @ElephantSealResearchGroup
      @ElephantSealResearchGroup  9 месяцев назад +1

      Well, not really "carved" ;-) They are made with hair dye (see video ruclips.net/video/zw7YCnRe2m4/видео.htmlsi=6RxzE4Gk7vgSFWXm) and this is done to be able to recognize them from the distance. We have been studying elephant seals for 30 years, and this is the standard method to safely recognize them. It is harmless, it is shredded during the moulting season, and once they have their name we can observe and study them without disturbing.
