So I am taking this online course, and the examples the instructor gave were all 60 or 90 degree triangles but the actual problems had 123 or 76 degree angles and they never quite explained how to solve for them. they only said use trigonometry. In the two days I've been stuck on this it only took your 4 minute video to make me a master at the concept. Thank you so much

    USEFUL RULE:
When a sector is 120deg, and you split it into a triangle and a segment, then the middle of the longest side of the triangle will intersect exactly in the middle of the radius and the perimeteter
Example: In a 120deg sector, where the radius is 10, splitting the sector into a triangle and a segment, then the height of the triangle will be 5

Mario, you did a clear presentation of the problem and it will be helpful to many students. Thanks.
However, real life is more complicated. In the case of finding the remaining volume in a horizontal cylindrical tank, all you would know is the diameter of the tank and the depth of the remaining fluid. How would a person calibrate a dipstick for such a tank? That's a much more general version of the problem. It's easy to tell when the tank is either full or empty, but there is an infinite number of possibilities in between.

Well, I've made an equation, which also can be derived following the process shown here, being *_r²(π*(θ/360) - sin(θ/2)*cos(θ/2))_*
Is there any way to simplify it or is that what I'm stuck with?
Edit: OK new question. I have found out that it will simplify quite nicely when sin(θ/2)*cos(θ/2)=sin(θ)/2
But, I cannot figure out how to prove this. How do you derive this equation?

this is probably very late, but ig better late than never. When you have a right triangle that contains angle measures 30, 60, and 90, this gives us side lengths. The side length between the right angle and the 30 angle is going to be x root 3. The angle measure between the right angle and the 60 angle is going to be x. The hypotenuse is 2x. Since we are already given the 2x in this problem (4), we know that x is 2, therefore giving 2 root 3 in the other side. Since the triangle is congruent, we add 2 root 3 and 2 root three to get 4 root 3. It should be good from there
