In this episode we take a look at some facts, secrets, and history of Undertale. Undertale is an RPG developed by Toby Fox. The bulk of the game's work was done by Fox, with additional artwork by Temmie Chang. The game received acclaim from video game critics, with particular praise for its writing and characters. Undertale appeared 9th on the video games list in Time's "Top 10 Everything of 2015". It also appeared on best-of lists for GameSpot and The Escapist. As a result of the game's large fanbase in 2015, Undertale reached the first place in GameFAQs' "Best. Game. Ever." userpoll, winning against The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

I have literally never seen any of the shit these people complain about. It's like they actively seek out things to hate about the fanbase just so they can justify their irrational disgust toward the game itself. I know the creepy side of this fanbase exists, but is it that hard to avoid? I've managed to, anyway.

The process of Internet popularity:
1. A piece of media is produced and released with mass acclaim.
2. Fanbase for media grows at a fast rate, showing their love and praise for it.
3. Fanbase soon enough puts out too much content for it, causing it to get annoying to some people.
4. More and more people start jumping on the bandwagon for both sides of love and hate, regardless of if they have a good reason.
5. Fanbase grows more obnoxious as the hate base grows more toxic.
6. A constant war between the two, creating a lot of cringe and stupidity from both sides.
7. Continue for a year until the next big thing is released.
8. Repeat the process as the last piece of media dies down in popularity.
Doesn't matter if it's Sonic, MLP, FNaF, Steven Universe, Undertale or whatever might come after. The cycle will just repeat itself.
+MrConnman123 Yeah it's not really a fad (in fact the fad for Sonic is for which game to start hating all of a sudden), but I'd say it's one of the first things to start this whole cycle.
It'll soon calm down, that's what happened with FNaF and Steven Universe.

kazoojar As far as I know Sonic has always been a 'love it or hate it' franchise in terms of its games, with a bunch of people fangasming over it as well as people bashing the shit out of it.
I think Game Grumps were the first to majorly expose the whole conflict amongst the fanbase. They for sure started the bandwagon for hating on the Adventure games, though.

Leon Fook I find it a piece of shit at worst and mediocre at best. The music is all ripped off and uses sound chips and fonts from the genesis and snes, the songs don't loop properly, it feels more like a mini space shooter inside the battles (and all you do is dodge), you have to play the game 3 times to get everything, the game is slow, boring, the character designs are uninspired, you are given a reccomendation to *not* *kill* in a RPG, It tries too hard to be like "hey guys I'm an old school RPG, BUY ME". And, it tries to hard to be different. Last but not least, the m3m3s. There. Is that enough points?

I like how there are so many songs in undertale which are actually the same song just slightly modified, yet they still sound pretty gut

+Zehnter Yeah. Toby Lei motif'd the absolute FUCK out of the soundtrack. I always joke with my friends about how there's actually just, like, 6 songs in the whole game.
I like it, tho. It's got a certain charm.
I counted a while back, there's 33 unique melodies that are used and (in most cases) reused throughout the game.
But arranging isn't simple! It's actually pretty hard.

Putnam It's actually really cool that he reuses arrangements so often if you think about it. If you pay super close attention to what songs are used where, it essentially helps tell the game's story. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say some of it gives some really neat insight into the characters' personalies.
I could literally spend all day just shooting off theories and connections between all the tunes in the game. Asgore's theme is probably the most perfect example.
Kinda bugs me how so much of the trivia is about music, But you opt to not show any samples of the songs. I mean If you play the song you've got an idea of how it sounds, but it'd be nice to still hear a snippet when discussing it.

I've played through it 2 times and all you do is hold right and mash the action button to get through walls and walls of text. There isn't much to explore and no side quests. You just keep holding right until you get to ASS-gore's castle.
What is pissing people off is that there are people who really do think this game is incredible and probably the best game of all time that will "revive the game industry".
The game is nothing more than a meme-roller-coaster and will be forgotten and thrown into the trash in no time.

+Logan McQueary Lucero I like the game, but from a haters perspective, here are many good arguments presented - - - 1. The artstyle, many people just genuinely don't like it. I don't know if it the jagged edges or whatever else, but yeah. 2. The monster spawning system is annoying as hell, more encounters than pokemon and they can happen basically anywhere besides towns and save areas.... and even some save areas have encounters. This is especially annoying during genocide, where you quickly lose the guilt of "but nobody came" because it spams you with the message every 2 steps you take. 3. The overworld isn't extremely developed, I.E., in part because of the ultra annoying spawn system. The world isn't very large, and not extremely detailed. 4. The bossfights are kind of short, the only real thing forcing them to be longer is if you die a lot. 5. - this is my argument, I haven't seen it actually presented before - None of the weapon items or armour appear on frisk, unlike games like earthbound and other rpgs... It just seems lazy.

1% hate on it because they simply didn't find the game interesting or original.
+chiken The fanbase does the usual annoying stuff like RPing as characters on social media, r34, fanfictions, and shit. but they also tend to tout the game like it's the second coming of christ. IMO it's a good game, a great game even, but the way the fan base just shoves it in everyone's face is aggravating. This leads to a lot of people who actually liked undertale acting like aloof assholes and saying the game is only average or mediocre so that they can distance themselves from the "cancer". And then there's the people who legitimately don't like the undertale, and have to take a hard stance against the game as a counterculture against the overzealous fandom, like fucking hipsters. They, too, call the fandom cancer, because apparently that's the hip way to describe someone who disagrees with you.

Yeah, but you guys are missing the point. I'm a fan of Undertale, but I also managed to slide in right at the point Undertale was about to take off in popularity. I got to play the game only knowing that there was maybe a pacifist run and that there was a cat and bunny people shipped together (even though I later learned those two never interact lmao). IMHO, Undertale is one of those things that unfortunately benefited most from people being unaware of what it was about because a lot of the value comes from not actually knowing what happens or which characters are able to be spared. Although it's fantastic that a lot of people loved the game and are so hyped, feeding continuous fan made content to each other, the more people talking about it means the more the experience is cheapened for anyone else who wants to give it a try.
I personally liked the art style, I liked the combat system, I liked the characters, and I loved the music. But tbf, outside of that first playthrough where you don't know what is or isn't possible, you start to realize how futile everything is. Like my second playthrough I grinded for the Temmie Armor and it ended up being the biggest waste of time because you couldn't even die on the final boss... your defense didn't matter. On the Genocide run you're tempted to hunt out the best weapons available to you at each area, but it doesn't matter because nearly every enemy and boss can be one shot. The game has a lot of heart and some kind of amazing insights into how games warp our perception of violence- whether or not you agree with the point being made -but on a raw mechanical level it boils down to the Telltale game syndrome of choice making that is ultimately sort of superfluous. That, and after playing twice to get the heartwrenching good ending, it kind of sucks that you're not really allowed to play the last third of content (the Genocide run) because it will somehow permanently taint your save file, which you can only reverse by going into the app files and changing it manually. There are a lot of areas in the game that while they make a pretty neat statement, all in all Toby sacrificed some aspects of making a good game for making good art instead... which is not ultimately what every single gamer wants. As a fan of games like OFF and Earthbound I loved Undertale, but for people being promised an RPG the game could be understandably disappointing.
But all that being said, the fandom has everything to do with "haters" not liking Undertale or even wanting to give it a shot. Overhype, for me, is never an excuse not to try something (as I think there's some value in trying the stupid popular thing at least once to stay up to date with culture)... but in this particular case the fandom sort of falsely advertises something that simply does not exist in Undertale while ruining the "twists" that probably made it good for us. I.e. Even if a "hater" decided to shill out for a copy of Undertale, and would have liked it otherwise, they're going to be disappointed because it ultimately doesn't live up to some of the amazing fan created AU's and character personalities extended beyond the actual letter of the game.
If you need an example, consider Gaster: a character you cannot even see or interact with or really even know about without "cheating." Now think about how much of the fandom makes him out to be a core, central character. Now consider that effect on a new comer, but with literally. every. other. aspect. of. the. game.

the gameplay is new/intuitive, but the story starts a cycle of shitting the bed->halting->repeating itself once Alphys shows up and derails your entire quest, lies to you, tries to kill you with her robot, keeps lying to you, reveals that she murdered a bunch of people. Aaaaand she gets forgiven? There's a difference between pacifism and Stockholm syndrome.
Ok a few corrections to what you said, alphys doesn't try to kill you with the robot, she had everything under control and planned everything, until mettaton decides he doesn't like it and tries to kill you.
And when you said she murdered a bunch of people I assume you are talking about the amalgamations, she got dying monsters and injected determination into them to collect their souls after their death, but they stayed alive and they all melted together to form the horrible amalgamations, she didn't murder anyone.
There are exactly two kinds of people who leave RUclips comments: People who like Undertale, and people who get inexplicably furious that there are people who like Undertale.

Help, I don't understand either.
I really liked the use of leitmotifs in the game. How multiple songs are different versions of previously-used songs but sped up or slowed down was very clever. For instance, the Genocide-only theme "But Nobody Came", besides being yet another reference to Earthbound, is actually a hyper-slowed-down version of Flowey's theme, "Your Best Friend". The theme of the final boss in a Neutral run, "Your Best Nightmare", is also a remix of Flowey's theme. Sans's theme, which I believe is called "sans." is slowed down a bit and given a smoother tone as the music played during your restaurant dinner with Sans at the hotel.
2:01 He actually recently stated that the project he originally created those tracks for was actually Deltarune. He said that Heartache would've been the "Joker fight theme" (probably Jevil) and Bonetrousle wouldve been the original battle music.

Every fandom has extreme/toxic people. Fnaf has them, mlp has them, sports teams have them, anime has them. Seriously this is nothing new. The only reason it seems Undertale has the worse is because it's currently in the lime light. Wait for the next popular thing to come out and then THAT will have the most "toxic"/"cancerous" fan base.
Literally everything good has a fanbase. Undertale, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, FNaF, Sonic, EVERYTHING. When something is popular it becomes "cool" to not like it. It's not even limited to video games. Mad Max: Fury Road became so popular that people hated it, The Force Awakens is "Overrated", the only thing where people don't hate because of the fanbase is sports, AND SPORTS SUCKS!

Wow...i knew Toriel was a parody of tutorial characters but i still find it funny that her literal parody of hand holding makes her endearing while outside of Undertale such characters (example being Fi just for reference) are universally hated.
