Thank you so much for this video. Before I knew I about the HPSP scholarship I knew I have always wanted to serve in the military. Knowing this is an option for me when I get to Med School is a blessing. I think this is a great opportunity to serve while practicing medicine and changing many people’s lives. I definitely have a lot of work to do in order to meet the physical requirements, which I know I can accomplish!😊👏🏽🙌🏽
Hey Brittny! I'm doing the HPSP for medical school as well! I've been accepted into med school, and I will be commissioned soon (hopefully within the next week)!
If you don't mind me asking how long did it take for you to be approved for HPSP? Ive been accepted to medical school and my packet is complete. I'm just waiting on colonel of education and training to approve it. It has been about 3 weeks now and I'm getting nervous lol.
I’ve made the decision to join the army to pay for med school since December (beginning of senior year of high school ) and this video clarified so many questions. Thanks again!
I am also making the decision of joining the army to help pay for medical school even though that is about five years away because I am currently a junior in high school. It would be great if we could communicate with each other as we both want to take the military route as a medical student.
Thank you so much for the information!! I am a Navy vet and pre-med so I was seriously considering this program to go back Active duty...thank you so much for your platform, it's such a blessing!!
Clearly delivered information and you are definitely inspiring! 2nd Lt and paid student?! Get It Girl! Not to mention, the service you will be providing of healing our wounded warriors is phenomenal.
My daughter is a high school junior and is seriously considering joining the Air Force and becoming a medical doctor. We spoke to a recruiter yesterday and I’m waiting for her to make a decision about how soon she wants to join. It’s refreshing to see your channel. 😊
Thank you! As somebody who also has no prior military experience (or family military experience) this was really helpful. This was the first time I could hear a "real" person discussing the reality of the program for them
Thank you for this video! I have always wanted to be a doctor in the military. I was so stoked when I heard about HPSP. I am currently enlisting into the Marine Corps but I am hoping to do HPSP through the Navy when I am done in the Marine Corps and I get my degrees.
It's interesting. I live in Czech republic and my wife studied military medical school, they paid for her education for 6years, but she needed to service to military for 18 years. And it wasn't such amount of money as in US🙏🏻 Good for you! Congrats!
Thank you for this video, I am trying the non traditional path to medical school myself and want to take the military path to get there as well. I was never able to find someone on youtube that has done it, I was kind of discouraged until I found your channel. Your truly inspiring!
I love your videos ❤️! Thank you for sharing your experiences and insight about medical school and the HPSP! I’m planning on applying to medical school next summer as well as the HPSP through the Army 😉.
Hey, you can do multiple HPSP’s (you don’t have to apply to one branch even if the recruiter says you can’t) but the army and navy have more opportunity (slots) than Air Force. HOWEVER- I’ve heard Air Force is cushier, but it also depends on where you wanna be. Navy is the ocean (Florida, CA, Rhode Island, anywhere coastline). Air Force is is mostly dessert (Nevada, Idaho, Utah, etc) . Army is in muggy land or mountains (, Kansas , CO, Texas, Alabama, etc).
@@thebrittnyway I loved it! I started last semester (I am a sophomore) passed the AFOQT, but I decided to wait until after undergrad to pursue the AF because the program at Tennessee State can be somewhat time consuming :(
@@thebrittnyway But I just wanted you to know that one day we were required to give a presentation as to why we wanted to join ROTC and I mentioned you as one of my role models, so I just want to thank you!
Great info! The big downside, though, is the pay as an attending. It is ABYSMAL compared to what you’d make as a civilian doctor. Even family medicine doctors make around 30% less, more than 50% less for higher paying specialties. There are literal peer-reviewed studies on this, look them up! I did the math when I started getting recruiter emails. Even accounting for the signup bonus, school stipends, higher residency pay, saved capital and interests on student debt, free health care, tax incentives, etc., you still come short around $200K-600K after your four years of commitment. The losses just compound from there if you decide to stay. Definitely only do it if you want to be part of the military. Otherwise, civilian doctors will be better off in the end, even if they’re initially drowning in several hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loans.
This video was very helpful!! I'm considering the Air Force or Navy. I am worried about the leadership part because I'm not quite sure how to gain leadership experience. Also I'm a nontrad premed student; I was worried that I will be the only person in my late twenties going into COT...how do they view age?

As an African American I understand your sentiment and pride but I want the world to see her for herself so others can accept her for what she is and what she has accomplished.
Is there any different in the educational systems between military and civilian med school? And when you complete the military med school and offer the four years service, can you switch to a civilian doctor without having anything again to do with the military?
Heyy Brittny! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!! It's been super helpful! Also FYI wanted to point that i was not able to view your blog..as the link says expired.

for medical school? pretty sure anyone just gets it, pretty sure they're lenient with the gpa and mcat requirements, although there is one. for dental and stuff i think it's more competitive
Hi! I was wondering if you’re able to choose the state of where you do your residency so that when you transition back out of the military you’ll be set in that state. Thanks!
I am interested in the program, but I have a couple of questions about residency. I have a dog, which is why I am looking at the HPSP route versus the Uniformed Services University. If I am single at the time and I want to match into a military residency, would I have to live in the dorms or would I be able to immediately live off base to bring my dog with me. Any tips about having a dog in the military, in general, would also be appreciated.
The time you'll spend away from home studying in medical school, in clerkships, and on away rotations is the same between USUHS and HPSP. That statement doesn't make much sense. I am HPSP, active duty with a dog. I'd find a friend or S.O who can watch your dog while your away. Edit: I know plenty of people at USUHS who lived off base with their dog during medical school.
Ok, question i plan on joining the air force (hopeful pj, if not aerospace medical tech). Can i use my gi bill to get a degree to get a in biology, then use the hpsp to go to med school while im already in the service? TIA
How does it work exactly being a doctor in the army, navy or Air Force because i wanna be a surgeon but idk how i can do that if i wanna help out in the military to be a doctor I’m only a sophomore in Hs ?
Hello! Thank you for doing this. I have a question about residencies. Would the military be the right path for me if I’m pretty set on what residency I want to pursue? I want to be a neurologist, but I’m not sure if the military has a high need for that speciality. Would it be difficult for me to become a neurologist if I joined the military?
@@qetsiyah1766 Becoming a Neurologist is a difficult path in the military or not. I applaud you for stepping up and going for your goals! The Army does offer a neurology residency. It’s highly competitive so if you go that route make sure you have good step scores. You can apply to both civilian and Army neurology residency programs through the scholarship we offer.
To clarify, some people decide to stay in the military (active duty) even after they have fufilled their service obligation. For anyone who wants to retire and receive pension, they must serve 20+ years. That is completely optional and is not required.
If you don’t match into a military residency the first time is it possible to match into a civilian residency instead (and fulfill the service requirement after finishing that residency)? Also have you enjoyed your experience with the Air Force? I am currently debating if I should apply to the Army or AF HPSP program (or if I should apply at all).
Have you held any leadership positions in sports or civic organizations? Team captain? Boy Scouts? Positions of responsibility? Were you ever a supervisor?
I’m leaning towards Army heavily, because Air Force doesn’t hold a lot of military residency, for the reason of retirement. That’s a big determining factor for me. I’ve seen they defer AF up to 50% of the time for residency, while Army is 98% residency match to a military residency. Big deal also you have limited career mobility in AF as they own no fellowships all of them are owned by army/navy. Just something to think about as I did
