Frank Oakley Lecture - In the Steps of Fra Angelico

Francis Oakley, interim director of the Clark and a noted historian, presents "In the Footsteps of Fra Angelico: Savonarola and the Florentine Millennial Dream" on June 1, 2016. Oakley addresses the dramatic rise and tragic fall of Girolamo Savonarola (1452-98) as a religious reformer and civic leader in Renaissance Florence, as well as the difficulties historians have encountered in trying to make sense of his life.

Are we being set up to think that Savonarola was a hero? He whose preaching would have destroyed more great works of art as being heretical? Huh?!
