You didn't need to look far. Check out this Baadsvik masterpiece. It's my favourite concerto ruclips.net/video/_6OrRnGUXcI/видео.html, excellent writing that doesn't use tuba cliches.
I must say, one of my favorite parts of this piece is right at the 3:43 mark, where you can't really tell where the soloist ends and the other tubist takes over. Real listening right there.
Lots of slow practice. My own journey with this piece was I learned the piece years ago (high school). For this performance I revisited my original musical ideas, but ultimately created many new musical ideas that can be heard throughout the concerto. First and foremost learn the ins-and-outs of the work (stick to the details on the page) and then start coming up with your own ideas. Recordings are a great starting point for musical discovery. Good luck!
@@jakobbrown4016 practice long tones, a lot, play with your air on the low notes you can get and don't press your face against the mouthpiece. if you just blow air into the tuba without your lips barely touching the mouthpiece you'll get it!
I don't expect to be able to do this in a while. I'm only 2 years on my tuba, and although I got to Waltz for Mippy III and am trying to do Shostakovich Polka, I'm still stuck on a stupid Yamaha tuba that can only hit a low e! No compensating valves either! I also have no tuba teacher, so its a struggle. Would any of you guys suggest any tuba practise books to develop a proper practice routine?
Love it ! My son is going the play the same thing in May with his High School Wind Ensemble (School of the Arts, San Francisco)... I'm a proud Mom ....
Good job man! 5 years old too! I can't imagine how good you are now! That tone is insane, and so is your tempo control. I can tell you worked hard on this.
LeBashfulBadger There is a reference made in the development section to the opening theme of Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto. so Gregsons concerto is based of Vaughn Williams
i get the impression that this must be challenging, but a really cool concerto to play. (I am not a tuba player as u can prolly tell...) I would LOVE to see more concerti for this beautiful but under-rated instrument!
Great!! Your tone is very beautiful. Are you professional Tuba player? Of the tone of the tuba will refer to it. A wonderful performance, thank you! from Japan.
Wow! Such beauty of tone and control of phrasing! I wish everyone in the world played this well. I know he had a few blemishes but this was a live performance and I don't think you could find many better live recordings of it than this! (if you do, let me know) I strive to be as good as you Derek Fenstermacher. Pleasure to watch! Who did your recording? They were fantastic, super professional looking
Wonderful performance. Gentle soft playing. Exact pitch. great musicality of the player. Shoul be put on a disc for the enjoyment of the general public.
I love this piece in particular but you vibrato made the piece a bit better. I'm going to try this piece for a solo do you have any suggestions? Otherwise great playing nice tone and the runs were consistent.
It's more universal than a BBb it gives you the dark sound of a BBb but is more versatile in the higher range. Most professional musicians have C Eb or F tubas
I am an avid tuba player, and i love playing this piece, but i would absolutely love to know, seeing as how i thought that this concerto was only composed for tuba and piano, who arranged this version?
EMMANUEL RICHARD whatever key of tuba you prefer. I played it on BBb the first time, and now I am revisiting it on F tuba. It honestly is up to the player's preference.
I played this for my grade 8...got a distinction...and im a maths graduate...by the way, do you know of any tuba duets that kind of say "farewell" ? cus one of my section is going to be leaving to go to university...
Tuba players, according to the stereotype often seem quite wide or broad in the chest. I suppose it's a sign of having a large breath capacity. Does anybody know? Trombone players also often seem to be of a type, tall but not very flashy, while trumpet players often tend to be shorter and have more of an intense look. What do you think?
Yeah, It seems to be bigger boys who play with the occasional girl or small guy . I really don't know why, but brass seems to be predominantly male, with bigger men on the bigger chunks of brass. I guess it is because of this trend that people of that stature are attracted to such an instrument.
Well I can agree that Tuba players are usually bigger guys playing the instrument. For me, I am tall (6'2") but I am actually skinny, so I fall partially under it. The instrument take a lot of air so I guess it makes sense for bigger guys needed to play the instrument. Anyone can, but it just takes a lot of time and practice for anyone to fully grasp the Tuba in their own way.
@hugoishuge no its is how they are made. some are made with four others with three depends who makes them :) but yes three valve tubas are a lot easier to train a tuba on i must say ;) andyes i am a tuba player :)
This was an extraordinary concerto. He played it as if he had written it himself. I'm not sure about how the other kinds of tubas work or the exact differences but I'd like to know. If someone could fill me in that would be nice. I play a bbflat tuba. I am only 16 and my director is going all over the place about me. 1st 1st at all region. But if someone could get back to my on the types of tubas it would be helpful.
im trying to play this piece now but am not getting the good tone or range i can get low enough I just cant sustain the higher notes any advice you could give me?
nice job did u do this on a c? I am a senior in high school and i only play b flat tuba never tried c but every master class i have gone to they always r talking about c tuba is it that important to learn? i know it is good for higher ranged music like this so i assume that u r using a c.
@KauaiBallerof2012 i think it goes up to the E above the staff.. and high G if you play the new cadenza. some of its harder than vaughan williams, some easier
I love this piece , along with Concerto for bass tuba by gregson. I'm attempting both of these peices and challenging me to have them done before my frshman year is over! Any1 think i can do it? :)
it's not the tuba, often times it's your embrasure. when looking for a full tone widen the mouth and don't press your face into the mouth piece. before blowing into the tuba practice by simply blowing raspberry with all your air, do this a few times, then take a deep breath and recreate what you did away from the instrument. repeat this and your tone should be getting better and better!
In regards to buying a tuba before college is all around a bad idea. First you need to develop a good and articulation and simply know what to look for in a tuba (is there any resistance when blowing air? or is it free flowing). And most importantly bring another trained tubist with you to decide that you sound best on that horn.
I've found it, in the depths of RUclips, a Tuba concerto, a Tuba masterpiece, not a 10 year old playing long tones.
You didn't need to look far. Check out this Baadsvik masterpiece. It's my favourite concerto ruclips.net/video/_6OrRnGUXcI/видео.html, excellent writing that doesn't use tuba cliches.
There’s a lot of good tuba literature look up john williams tuba concerto
I just read the date lol
Pat Sheridan, Scott Sutherland, Derek fenstermacher, oystein baadsvik, all have great content for tuba

Derek Fenstermacher any tips on improving my tone on tuba? My upper tone is good but my lower tone could use some improvement!
Derek Fenstermacher please tell me that tuba you play in this video is F tuba or C?

One of the best renditions of Gregson Tuba Concerto I have ever heard. If I learn this piece I am going to listen to this recording a lot.
This is the tone I aspire to have.
No kidding. He's so clean too :O
I love the balance between the flute and tuba duo
Love it ! My son is going the play the same thing in May with his High School Wind Ensemble (School of the Arts, San Francisco)... I'm a proud Mom ....
This is some truly world class playing.
Wouldn’t say world class but he’s good. I played this in high school.

check out Derek's Channel. He is an amazing musician and has a sound no other.
Well, 3 years after this post, he's the Principal of the St. Louis Symphony :)
0:59 killing it with the tuba
3:00 just beautiful
as a trumpet player I now have a new respect for the tuba =]
This has to be the best video of a tuba solo I’ve ever seen. Rich good tone and just making the Tuba look and sound so good overall. Great work.
3:02 was honestly beautiful!!
nice Vaughn Williams tuba concerto quote at 3.55-4.03, anyone else notice this?
Ya you're right haha
Yeah, they're connected, I think that one of them was based off of the other, but I can't remember which.
LeBashfulBadger There is a reference made in the development section to the opening theme of Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto. so Gregsons concerto is based of Vaughn Williams
Truls Vik yuh
technically is a whole step up but yeah
That's such a beautiful tone. BRAVO!
Playing this for my solo and ensemble this year, amazing job on the high e's
I love the Vaughn Williams lick !
hats off to you. one of the best performances I've heard of this piece. ever. Fletch worthy
Beautiful musicality, gentle sound, exact pitch. Wonderful performance.
Great full sound! Tuba-Greetings from Sweden.
とてもきれいです!
I love your tone quality. Round, bouncy and light. not being biased here but i really think it's one of the best tones i've heard in my life.
音綺麗すぎ…
この曲タンギングがうまくいかないー!!

I played this years ago.
Very nicely done, very clean and musical.
Excellent performance. My best regards.

Great Job Derek! From your old friend Joseph Horton. Great Full Sound!
Watched your Vaughn Williams concerto as well. Your tone is amazing lol
man i love everything about this performance. Your tone is phenomenal, If you ever make a solo cd, im definitely buying it
Excellent job, Derek
Thank for this upload (: up untill this point i had no apprectiaton for the tuba untill now
Doing this piece at state solo and ensemble this weekend. Great recording for reference :) awesome job man.

Thanks !
I cant wait till I can play as well as you!!
Seriously, amazing though.

Derek is now the tuba player for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.
Very nice! Very good tones :)
yeah i love her afinity, wow
God I wish I had this talent
It's more universal than a BBb it gives you the dark sound of a BBb but is more versatile in the higher range. Most professional musicians have C Eb or F tubas
So I play the tuba and I’d like some advice on how to fill a room with my sound
Use more air with out increasing your volume. Just search up a video on it. Helps sound quality %100
This makes we want to learn tuba!
you have a beautiful tone, especially on the high E
@haneycr Not quite, he hasn't won it yet. He is in the final two, and he gets to play with them in May before they decide whether he gets it.
That oboe player in the front is the perfect example of what not do, lol. She's fucking staring him down when she's not playing.
Oh my goodness I was just about to say the same!
Are you saying she can't look where she wants to, you shit-for-brains?
1MrZackdaddy lol
she was probably intrigued by his playing. Besides, what else are you going to do when you're part is 90% rests?
I am an avid tuba player, and i love playing this piece, but i would absolutely love to know, seeing as how i thought that this concerto was only composed for tuba and piano, who arranged this version?

very good!
well played! x
Working on this piece for my sophomore barrier. Any tips?
that all depends on the time you put into it, if you pull it off post it on youtube
Hey there, Derek. Just wanted to know your input on that Yamaha 822. You make it sound outstanding in this performance.
What keyed tuba are you playing? I’m learning this concerto on BBb and it is tricky

Why didn't I know tubas were capable of this before now???

haha, tubas can also be graceful too~

Muy buen ejecutado, felicidades.....
how high does this go? and how is it compared to vaughan williams?

excuse my ignorance, but I thought only training tuba's didn't have the 4 valves? Yet I am fairly certain thatis not a training tuba....

I wanna learn this song. But my school only has BBb Tubas (bout 30 years old). Any tips for hitting those high notes on a BBb?
Jack Stephenson play high a lot
BBb can also play this piece easily
tuck the top lip under the bottom but this usually is a quick fix and doesn't help with tone
the conductor could've done a better job of following.
Yamaha YFB 822 F tuba. He is selling it if you are interested
looks like 4 people hate awesome tuba playing
counting should be internalized, and not shown with your hand. I played it on a C tuba and the High E's were nothing. :)
what type of tuba is this? Crazy good tone.

Its likely a C tuba from all the valve pulling. And it seems to be slightly chunky as in a contrabass tuba
Actually its a Yamaha 822 F tuba.
