When I was a kid growing up in Germany, the deposit on the bottles was the first money I earned. I never got an allowance, but my family had a friend who was a superintendent at a hotel. There they always had countless of bottles and I was "hired" to bring them away to the store and my loan was basically the deposit. This was in the early 2000's and in those days, the deposit wasn't standard for all stores. So some bottles would have to be brought to certain stores (Plus, Aldi, Metro, aso...). That was a bit of a pain in the a... ... the value for the bottles was also different for different drinks and stores. Beer bottles were only like 12 cents, I think 20 cents was the most you ever got for a bottle. However, I did find a beverage store right next to where I lived, where they actually took most of the bottles I had, so that saved a lot of time as I didn't have to go through a whole list of stores. They also had a deposit machine for the bottles, which wasn't common in those days. You usually had to get in line and the cashier had a bix box next to him, and he would count the bottles as he throws them in there. The downsite was that I had to go home by tram, with a whole large bag of bottles. The bag was as big as I was and I had a hard time carrying it, but somehow I managed. The store owners of the beverage store eventually got to know me as the kid who always comes with a huge bag of bottles. I Once got over 20 bucks out of that in one go, which was A LOT in those days. In total I saved up around 360€. As I never got an allowance, this really taught me to value money and what it means to hussle for it. Great and fun times.

I long knew that in Berlin, homeless people gather up the bottles in bags, and people even leave their empty bottles next to park benches for the homeless to pick up. In my country, an almost exact copy of the German system was introduced half a year ago. The local homeless really caught on and gather all the bottles. But the system wasn't prepared for this, because one homeless man with three garbage bags of bottles can hold up the line for 15 minutes until he is done.

When I first came to Germany 20 years ago I used the elevator in buildings to reach the third floor for instance (I thought this is the reason why it's there in the first place). My colleagues would laugh and always take the stairs upwards/downwards. I found it back then quite weird. After all these years i work on the fourth floor and understand the feeling of not wanting to use the elevator, i.e. i am 100% integrated. I have the feeling that this is definitely a German thing and I never witnessed this shame of using elevators elsewhere. If that's the case then maybe it's a good idea for a future sketch I thought xD

Lifed in munich for a couple of years and depending where you are going there can be quite some litter around. Or on the streets or on yards and bushed and people who drop it careless. If you go mo more towards the city center. Like Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt or Hofbräuhaus, you can expect that it is cleaner, because those are the places tourists would visit

I love Liam’s dad. He is so chill. I can see where Liam got his sense of humor. If you look at old videos of London the streets there used to be immaculately clean too. I’m older than all 3 of you btw-in my parents generation. As for the “toast” issue. I’m British (Scottish) but have lived in the US 35 yrs. I think what the Germans call “ toast” the Americans call “ sliced bread” as in pre sliced? I agree with your dad though, “ toast” is any bread toasted. Liam you need to drink Yorkshire Gold tea, the best tea ever.😂😍 your dad might switch back if he were in US as all the people I know use coffee makers, not instant coffee. 😂 I loved this podcast 💕
I think a great video idea would be Liam's dad asking Liam what X thing is in German. And it's just the same as English. And then he's just like "oh, that's easy", that keeps happening and then he's like "oh, German's not as hard as I thought!" I just randomly discovered your RUclips channel thanks to the algorithm but it’s cool to see your intercontinental marriage! I learned German in university and always figured I’d go study abroad maybe meet a nice German/Austrian/Swiss etc woman and maybe emigrate… instead I married someone from South America and now the German is mostly forgotten… Spanish however is another story…
I like Aldi because every store is set out the same. My shopping list matches where things are in the shop. The quickest I've done a weekly shop for a family of 5 was 15 minutes.
Towards Speed Limits on Non-Autobahn streets: On any street, where either - there are at least two lanes per direction, or - the two directions are separated by some physical barrier (baulich getrennt) there is no general speed limit (only Richtgeschwindigkeit 130km/h).
