  • Fans at Candlestick Park sing "San Francisco" during an emotional pre-game ceremony in the aftermath of the 1989 earthquake tragedy. The song was originally popularized by Jeanette MacDonald in the 1936 movie "San Francisco", which showed the events of the 1906 earthquake and fire.

Great video and great song, I wish we'd hear it more at Giants and Niner games, although they DO play it...it's an official City song, you know!

Ya know when I was growing up in the Bay area we all rooted for BOTH the A"s and Giants. They even sold hats that were half A's caps and half giants caps. It was a supported rivalry, not a Red Sox/Yankees rivalry.
Now all I see is from A's fans is "Giants suck" and from Giants fans "A's suck" ... This is one of the reasons I became a Cardinals fan.
Though I grew up an A's fan, I still support BOTH the A's and Giants, not one or the other. I think Rivalries get too heated sometimes. :)

Why do I think this song still would've been sung if the earthquake didn't even occur?

what i remember about the earthquake when we were shaken and went outside our house, all the neighbors asked if we were alright. What is so cool about this video and other videos is you see californians helping eachother out in a natural disaster

No one in sf know this song it is because no one ever teach us this in schools maybe they did 70-80 yrs ago , and plus most part of it in california stop teaching the pledge of allegence in schools ,over time people change the way people see the world has changed and it will continue !

can't expect SF residents to know the song - Americans are astonishingly good at knowing nothing of their own musical heritage.

It was fantastic that the commentator recognised the beautiful, legendary Jeanette Macdonald in singing this wonderful salute to San Francisco;maybe it should be used in television promotions to TRY to revive the present sorry state of this once magnificent city .

@gryphonisle Ironically, the comment criticizing this video is about as cynical as I've seen. I was in the 1989 earthquake. It was no average quake. I've been through many, many average quakes in SF, where you shrug off the tremors; it's part of the territory. This one basically shut down the city--bridges, the Marina, etc. To say that singing about the SF spirit at the re-start of the SF-Oakland World Series was cynicism is about as cynical as you can get.

@NickTruman93 NY is alright, but it still can't touch SF. By the way, "it's really big" is not a valid reason, so don't even try to play that on me.

The reason they're singing is because its the only way to cleanse their nostrils of that vomit/urine stench that follows you everywhere you go in that city.
