    I thought the scene where Janeway and Seven were trapped together, was incredibly well done. The dialogue was precise, and every word essential. When Seven flinched at Janeway's touch, it reminded us of her disconnect from the crew. She is still uncomfortable with skin contact, adding to her fear of being immersed in Earth's population.

    You know, supposedly the 'Wheel of Names' is random, but at times like this I can't help but feel he's picking the name to use for the episode ahead of time. That the wheel would happen to stop on a name that references a character from a space adventure where the characters are swept up into an advanced alien ship with a near-miraculous-but-still-somewhat-untrustful means of travel/propulsion that the characters are near-desperate to use but the consequences for using it are almost too severe to consider that ultimately lead them into trouble but manage to survive because of a slight change in attitude/perception of life to allow them to be on their merry way as if nothing had ever happened at all... ... ... ...Well, that's just highly improbable, isn't it?

    So the not deleting the rest of the message I think that that could be explained by Zaphod not fully thinking his plan through. I am surprised it went as long as it did. I can chalk up a bit of willful blindness to the Voyager crew, but stopping to think about it, the ruse falls apart in seconds. He's a man consumed by grief and a wish to die and take down Voyager with him. If he can just take them down too he can rest. He can die in peace and he can give up.
    Honestly it felt like someone who was suicidal but ashamed of giving up. He is ashamed he's not joining the survivors and working with them, and while Voyager has blame to take he's focusing all of his negative emotions on them, arguably rightfully so.

I've always hated it when morally grey decisions so often get brushed off with the captain is right, because she's the captain and can never be questioned (this happened a lot with Archer in S1&2) so when we get episodes like this I appreciate them all the more.

    Hope & Fear is such a great title and a strong episode to close out the season. If only the writers planned ahead and already knew they'd be opening season 5 with 'Night', the one where they're traveling through a starless void. Just think what a cliffhanger it would have made if Voyager's slipstream drive had conked out right in the middle of that emptiness. Without any stars, they can't properly navigate or determine where they are... What will do they do?
    It'd be the perfect bookend to an entire episode of Janeway being reminded of the consequences of her actions for other species. Now she has to face the consequences of stranding her people in the Delta Quadrant. Ah, if only...
    Of course, the speed of the slipstream drive doesn't make a lick of sense. At the start of the season, Kes flung Voyager 10.000 light years beyond Borg space, "10 years closer to home". But the Dauntless is able to return to Borg space within hours. Voyager catches up, rescues Janeway and Seven and then they use their own drive for another few fours... But only get 300 light years out of it?

    • @Unlimited_Lives
      @Unlimited_Lives  Год назад +2

      I'd taken that last point to mean that the Borg have significantly expanded since the defeat of the NumberSpecies. Transwarp Wotsits mean they could have leapfrogged Voyager. That said, the bit about only getting 300 ly away from them felt off. Guess we'll add distances to the "do not measure this stuff" list, along with time, shuttles, torpedoes, crew...

    • @Jimbo877CashNow
      @Jimbo877CashNow Год назад +3

    • @HappyBeezerStudios
      @HappyBeezerStudios Год назад +1

      Would be a great season finale double episode. And there are quite a few good ones.
      And the "going back into Borg territory" thing: My idea was always that Borg space is sort of a horseshoe shape. They have their main core, and then some outreaching "antennas" (connecting worlds worth assimilating, efficiency and all), with a very long one that bends around. That way they can encounter Borg early, get zapped off by Kes, and head back into Borg by the finale.
      That they are so close to Borg space might be a risk worth taking. The Borg might still be occupied elsewhere.
      That Voyager can only do 300 light years might be simply explained by the fact that they use alien tech on their ship. When they steal that Borg transwarp thingy they can't go all the way home either.
      Oh but the fact that Voyager takes "a couple days" to catch up works out. At warp 9.8 it would be a bit over 2 days for 15 lightyears, at warp 9 it about 3 1/2 days, at warp 8 it's a bit over 5 days and at warp 6 2 weeks. Considering it's sort of an emergency, they would go fast.

      @@Unlimited_Lives That is incredibly smart. I know in one episode there is talk about how comfortable in all kinds of environments the uniforms are (afaik it was Worf saying that), but having them also edible would be the next step.
      Or Startfleet could be sensible and give away teams actual survival equipment. Like a vest that contains emergency rations, first aid supplies and maybe a battery that can be used to run flashlights, recharge phasers, and power a very small personal shield. No fully armored space suits but just stuff that can get them out of a tight moment.
      Go even further and do that duck blind thing integrated into a blanket. Use it to hide yourself, but also to stay warm and in shade. And since the Federation is supposed to be peaceful, make it more like a hunting vest than a military vest.

    Arcturis's motive in this episode is interesting because it shines a light on something that goes unspoken in a lot of Borg related episodes. That being, when debating something like Hugh's killswitch puzzle they talk about the Borg as if they are ONLY a threat to the Federation, and not basically all technologically advanced life in the quadrant (albeit somehow toned down by the revelation that the Borg are racist but that always felt like a stupid addition) as if every species has the defensive power of the Federation in a Borg confrontation. I do get that from a writing standpoint it's to make the debate about basically committing genocide on the Borg more of a reasonable debate and not onesided as Arcturis's point would make it. Still, it does cause some cognitive dissonance in certain scenes.

    First the ship was launched, then tested for a month in the alpha quadrant. It worked decently well, so Starfleet send the message. They do 2 more months of testing before they're sure the thing can do that long trip. So the worst early issues are ironed out and there is a holo crew to do maintenance. So the alien built a whole ship designed to look like a more advanced Starfleet vessel? I'm confused. Do they explain where he got the resources to do that? How did he come up with the design? Did he just extrapolate from Voyager?

    I've always wondered about phaser fire in a teleporting object.
    It's clear in almost all examples the phaser is hitting something. Even if just a small portion of atoms were destroyed, how would that affect the transportee?
    Obviously it doesn't cause any medical harm. That makes sense. The atoms are completely scrambled. Put into a tight beam and reassembled elsewhere.
    So it really doesn't matter where you get shot. You'd come out fine. But, there must be destroyed atoms.
    Do the people lose weight is what I'm asking? Could this be turned into some sort of ultimate weight loss treatment?

    But Unlimited Lives, avoiding consequences is what makes the Western World great. Well, putting them off s long as possible at least.

    Them not eating for two days wouldn't be an issue I think. Its the future, not as a hand wave, just humanity very likely by that time would have a better grasp over our baser instincts. Also they were all Starfleet at one point. Im sure they have limited food survival training and coping mechanisms. Plus tuvok was there. Two days is nothing to a Vulcan, and he could help them stay focused.

    Do I think that Zaphod plan to be poorly planned? Yes.
    But he is not a 100% evil master manipulation. Maybe deep down a part of him wanted his plan to fail.
    Or he considers humans to be primitive (based on language) and his arrogance makes him believe that everyone will accept its lies. But he did not take into account Janeway' s scepticism, Tuvok's logic and 7's distrust.
    They may also be some survivor guild on him. I can't not think of another reason to commit something worse than death.
    Well at least now he is back to his people.
    And now that I am finally back to speed, back to DS9 that war is not going to start on its own

      Officially accepted as an Olympic sport in 2308. Janeway was supposed to be on the 2372 Poop Frisbee team for America, the year of the Oh No Risko Disco accident that left 28 dead. By kidnapping her, the Caretaker unintentionally saved her life.

      @@Unlimited_LivesI actually was under the impression that those deaths were related to the piss javelin event of 2376. Maybe I read it wrong.

    She's framed like that because this episodes root issue is about the borg. It's weak foreshadowing.

    Consequences, a great concept, unfortunately wasted in a mediocre Episode.
