I don't really pay attention to other sports besides hockey so, in that context, it's bonkers to me what players make in the NFL, NBA and MLB. I get that they, as leagues, bring in more money than the NHL but the difference in salaries is mind boggling.
@wokenpancake Because the NHL Commissioner kicks the you know what out of the NHLPA every single negotiation. The players need a lawyer who will rep them instead of looking to be a mediator. The superstars need to step up and be their teams spokesperson so they are heard. But no. They're fine with how things are because they are paid. Totally different from the other 3 majors.
I grew up as a Mets fan in the post-madoff era, watching terrible offseason after terrible offseason Steve Cohen has really changed the direction of this franchise for the better
Yup. We could never dream of being as rich as these guys. And just think, he'll be making less by orders of magnitude than Elon Musk. The wealth inequality that still exists in the western world is staggering
did you take into account he only works 7 months and around 3 hours/day? cuz i think it's more like 25k...and even that isn't accurate because of off days.
Honestly, as much as the NHL has its flaws, this is why the league had to get a salary cap. Because based upon how a handful of teams were spending in the late 90s, this kind of contract would have been handed out by Toronto or the Rangers. And baseball refuses to acknowledge that they’re a league in decline. Not sustainable to keep handing out contracts like that
How so ? It’s not the ticket sales, concession sales and season ticket sales that pays the players salary it’s Cohens unlimited bd k account from all that hedge fund money.
It is absolutely insane. I remember when A-Rod got his massive contract and thought THAT was insane. There needs to be a Salary Cap. The Luxury tax is a slap on the hand is all.
Why punish teams for spending when thats been the case for decades? Shouldn't the owners who penny pinch and pocket the luxury tax instead of putting it into a better product be penalized instead?
Baseball doesn't need a salary cap, it needs a salary floor so the cheap owners who don't want to spend actually start doing so or sell their teams lol

If i can help explain modern baseball metrics: the most important stat, like the new batting average if you will, is OPS. It’s OBP + Slugging pct and it essentially gives you the best estimate of how much damage a player actually does, like how often they get on base and how much power they hit for. There’s also an absolute ton of sabermetrics that you can look at on baseball savant that can tell you where a player ranks in the league on some underlying metrics. Soto tops out in the 100th percentile in most of them, which is why he got such a contract.
I'm a Mets fan, so I'm pretty excited by this. Some people are upset about the size of this contract (or sports contracts in general), but I heard someone say this about athlete salaries and I think it's true. A pro athlete at the end of the day is an entertainer, it's more similar to being a movie star than it is a normal job, and no one is bothered when Tom Cruise gets paid hundreds of millions to star in a movie franchise, so why should we care when an athlete gets paid a lot. It's not like the owners are losing sleep over these contracts, so why should we. Let's go Mets!
I remember when Kirby Puckett got the first 3 million per year contract, and soon after lots of top players received similar contracts. That seemed like a ton of money. Thirty years or so later, that is considered an insult. Crazy times.
Something that is under the radar is that after 5 years Soto has the choice to either leave to go to FA again or get a $5 million raise per year. Even if he’s terrible he can get a raise if he wants.
The ROI for an Ohtani is much better because you're getting money from the Japanese market. You pay Soto because you want to win because he's not bringing in that extra money. The Padres signed him and then traded him to New York because him Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr were getting paid a lot (which ownership there was willing to do initially) but they weren't winning.
Pitcher power rankings are fun. The best of the best starting pitchers are so much fun to watch. If you do want to get more into baseball, try making sure you're leaning towards watching the best of the best. There's so many awesome pitchers to become a fan of!
Theres an owner Mark Attanasio of the Milwaukee Brewers: in order for him to afford Sotos contract not only would he have to give up his ENTIRE NET WORTH of 700 million dollars(which is a fortune over 10 lifetimes in itsself) but take out a 65 million dollar loan
These baseball contracts are nonsensical. They gotta have the mob involved or something. Baseball was a dying sport with a rapidly aging fanbase until these massive contracts came out of nowhere.
Maybe but compared to nfl and nba salaries it's normal. Like dak prescott makes 60 million a year and he's average. He just didn't sign for 15 so it don't seem so bad.
I am a life long Mets fan. This is insane. This past playoff run really reignited a love for baseball, and the Mets. I will say paying $40 for parking to find a fake spot under the highway in Queens is lame. Concessions also hurt as well.
I would love to see you cover baseball! I think that’ll be fun! On Soto’s contract, I can’t imagine anybody turning down that kind of money. Good for him for securing the bag and good for the Mets in acquiring a massive player on the market. However, I can definitely see a world where this backfires on the Mets tremendously. If Soto has a cold month or two, immediately the contract becomes an albatross… and that’s a realm of possibility.
It’s just insane to me that Soto is getting THIS much money. Like of course he’s a really good player worthy of a big contract, but… he wasn’t even the best player on the Yankees this year, and arguably wasn’t even the best player on the Padres when he was there. And yet he’s getting hundreds of millions more than Aaron Judge. It’s weird. I feel like the Dodgers outdoing everyone’s predictions on Ohtani caused the price of the next big free agent to drastically inflate. No way Soto would be getting anywhere near 725M if Ohtani was given 600-650M. Just makes me worry how these huge numbers will affect future MLB free agents. Will all big names from now on only become available to the Dodgers, Yankees, and Mets? Because no way my team (Mariners) is getting a significant free agent ever again if they’re all expecting 600-700 million. And certainly many other teams are much cheaper than mine is. I suppose we’ll just see in the coming future how this’ll all go down. And also, I think baseball content would be cool Shannon! Baseball and hockey are my primary sports that I follow, so how convenient would that be if the same guy was covering both of ‘em. Just don’t get yourself all sports’d out now!
Quoting UrinatingTree when I saw the terms of the contract, "OH MY GOD, WHATTHE (BLEEP) IS THAT?" The terms of the contract, even if Soto suddenly falls off a cliff production-wise, he is still getting paid. No deferred money, a massive signing bonus up front, and the opt out option after 5 years, Soto has the power to decide whether he wants to stay or if the Mets will match a pay raise to keep him around. The Mets better know what they are doing, or the next generation of baseball fans will be celebrating "Juan Soto Day" to mock the Mets.
I think there's a difference between Ohtani and Soto not signing with the Jays. Ohtani was clearly using the Jays to get a better contract with the Dodgers, giving the Jays so much hope just to sign with another team. Soto it seems like it wasn't just the Jays that were seriously in on him, I just want to see Schneider fired and Guerrero traded before he walks for nothing next season. Time for a complete rebuild imo.
This contract is just as unusual as Ohtani's, we won't really see a FA deal like this again for quite some time. It is exceedingly rare for a player of Soto's talent to come around already, and even rarer for said player to become a FA at TWENTY SIX YEARS OLD. He's most likely worth every penny, they'll probably make several million back instantaneously on jersey sales.
Only difference with Ohtani's is basically all of his is deferred. Soto is getting all of this $$ over the next 15 years. The age is def a bigtime factor. Soto turned down a 450 million dollar deal with Washington a few years back cause he knew this deal was eventually going to come. So good on him for betting on himself. If Ohtani hit the market at 26, he might've gotten a billion dollars. Also agreed that this type of deal wont be seen for a longgggg time. Maybe Paul Skenes gets a crazy contract a few years from now but I doubt that even reaches half of this since its not a player who plays everyday.
