@@MrTiomanisland The little focus point turns green. And it's very quick and quite accurate, especially in good light. There is also a very convenient zone focusing mode called 'snap focus' which I sometimes use.
It’s a nice camera, and your photos are interesting. I used the Sony RX 100VII and enjoy doing a walkabout in NYC and taking photos-street photography. I enjoy your videos, fun and informative. Thanks.
Hi, I need some advice for a "definitive" family photo camera that brings out images with some three-dimensionality focused more on portraits of my fast-moving children. I currently have a Nikon z50 16-50 and 50-250 (I am only unhappy with the small af limited area in Af-c and the lack of a 70-300 for my games) and sometimes it annoys me to take my bag with me in contexts to go out with my family and to the sea. need at least a compact camera that can be attached to a belt loop or that fits into a large pocket! I am undecided between the gr III x or fujifilm x100v or x-e4 + 27mm I am looking for the most creative and fun camera that will entice me to take it with me regardless, thanks!
If you want shallow DOF (which it sounds like) then the Fuji X100V will probably serve you better as it has an f/2 lens (I believe). But when I was first purchasing my GR II in 2017 or so, I was considering the Fuji X100F. Ultimately I chose the GR because it simply much much smaller and therefore more pocket-able than the X100. I have zero regrets to this day. The GR is the ultimate bring-along camera. The only times I don't have it on me are if I have a bigger camera instead (e.g. Nikon Z6 or D4). But the GR is my 'basic' camera in the sense that I will always have AT LEAST a GR. And the new GR IIIx, with the 40mm equivalent lens is fantastic. I find it much more of a 'daily driver' than the original GR III 28mm equivalent version. The 40mm FOV just works better for most of what I like to shoot. :)
@@mirkoregina8733 It's extremely sharp. But the bokeh is not particularly special. Actually, we did a video for the official Ricoh channel all about portrait photography with the regular GR III. It should give you an idea of how good it can be: ruclips.net/video/hoJCEBGE0TY/видео.html
@@mirkoregina8733 I want to chime in here for a bit: if sharpness is important to you and the sharpness of the IIIx is comparable to the III (I hope it is) then the IIIx will probably be a better fit for you than the X100V. I was prepared to sell all my cameras and switch to the Fuji. In the end I did sent the camera back because, coming from the GR III and an X-Pro 2 with the XF 35 f2, the X100V was too soft for my taste. Not saying the camera is bad, it’s pretty great in every respect. But in the end I liked the pictures from the GR a lot more due to sharpness and clarity of the image
For more videos like this! Is nice paced, just taking photos, without imposing rules for taking a photo, etc etc. The photo of the green wall with all the ACs are amazing! The same for the tram one, that you used the greenery as a foreground! :)

We're using a Nikon Z50, nothing fancy. The light was difficult on this day because we shot in the early afternoon so there was a lot of very harsh sunlight which we kept coming in and out of.
Yeah!! I wanted to buy the 40mm on day one (came out on Oct 1st in Japan) but it's sold out EVERYWHERE. I really wanna get my hands on one! That lens is part of the reason I finally went for a Z6II. Nikon had some vague info about the 28mm and 40mm compact lenses on their Z lineup roadmap as far back as fall 2020. I thought, hey that's perfect for me! :)
Great! Gave me a feeling of how shooting with this focal length works. Ordered the Ricoh now :) 28mm has always been the dealbreaker for me. This might have changed, as I can see.
How's the battery life on this? I've been thinking about getting this. I've read some reviews on the GR iii and a lot of people seem to complain about the battery life.
I never have issues with the batter, but I also don't expect a single little battery like this to last for 12 hours of shooting and thousands of photos. But a single battery easily lasts me an outing, which can last 3-4 hours and I might shoot 200-400 photos. I also make sure to keep the screen off the back of the camera (using the display button) to save juice. Having said that, I do tend to carry a spare battery (they are pretty cheap, anyway) if I think I'm going to use it all day. Once in a while I go to the spare. I've never ran through two batteries in a single day. :)
@@EYExplore oh I see. I guess you could think of changing battery like you're changing film. Is it also true that this camera seems to have fragile build?
@@amorbukid5899 I wouldn't say it's built like a tank but it's not fragile. I also own a Nikon D4. You could probably build a house with that thing instead of a hammer. Of course the GR is not on that level, but I have dropped my GR II on concrete and it was fine. I have not dropped the GR3 yet, but it feels just as sturdy. :)
No, I only shoot in raw and edit all of my photos. To me editing is part of the creative process. I don't edit very heavily though, and some photos have very basic adjustments. :)
It's always a good day when you guys drop a video! What's the camera bag you were using? Been wanting to get a small one for my everyday outings and yours looks pretty nice :)
Yep! I know, I saw it when I was editing. Aw well! I never expect to get the absolute best shots when shooting these vids. It's always a miracle when I do get one and then you'll see how genuinely excited I get haha. :)
Nice video, I explored that area and went to that shrine when I lived in Tokyo. I got my GR3x yesterday and as it's my first GR I'm slowly getting to grips with it and going over your old videos for advice on settings. Thanks for all the hard work and I'm looking forward to more videos on this great little camera
@@EYExplore thanks for the reply man, yea unfortunately we get everything last :( especially in Canada haha, I would hope the release date isn’t to far away!
Might end up buying the GR3X to use as well as my GR3. Typically walk around with the voigtlander 40mm on my D750 alongisde my GR3 so the 3X would make a great replacement when I'm tight on space or feeling lazy. Great video as always. Also I'm blown away by the quality of the lens from the 3X from what I can see. How is the vignetting on the files straight from the camera?
Glad to hear that! The vignetting is very subtle and I almost never 'fix' it. There is also a slight distortion, which I did not fix in any of these photos because the profile is not yet available in LR/ACR. However, I would like to remove the distortion for some images (like more geometric or architectural ones). But vignetting is no problem! :)
They should have called it GRIIIP for pandemic. Because it's the same camera but you can socially distance a little more. 😂 I love the photos and the area, plus 40-45mm it's how I started photography. For years I only had an aps-c canon with the 28f1.4. Then I enjoyed the fujifilm 27f2.8 on the X-E2. I miss it now I have only an X-70.
Just found your channel and not sure why it has taken this long to find you...Long-time street photog here since 2005. My Ricoh GR (original) is I think dying a slow death. Looking to see if the 3 or 3x is going to make me happy or frustrate me. Lots of differing opinions out there. Thanks for your work!
I have the GRIII and have preordered the GRIII X. There is no denying both cameras are perfect for street. It’s has to be mentioned that the battery life is, put simply rubbish. Not only that, when you take a number of shots in quick succession, the camera overheats and switches off. I’d say for a full days street photography, you need 4 batteries, or more. And don’t shoot too fast. I’m not picking holes here. Its a shame because both cameras in your review are perfect for street photography. Great shots btw.
I rarely go through more than one battery in an outing. I recommend keeping the screen off toe save juice. You do so using the display button on the back of the camera. I've also never had them overheat. I guess I don't shoot more than 4 or 5 shots in a burst at most, and that's rarely. Anyway, I accept that this is your experience with them, but I've never encountered this.
Thanks!! The bag is from a brand called Squalo Works. It's not a camera bag, just a little satchel. :)

The ricoh made me fall in love with 28mm. And then they released a 40mm, which is one of my favorite focal lengths. They're bastards for doing that, cause now i want both cameras. 🤦🏻♂️ i prefer having a 28 for an every day carry focal length, but when I'm specifically going out to shoot street, 40 would be amazing

The OG 28mm is the legend for me and will always be with me, although Im happy for you guys that wished for this camera for sooo long. Now you can tighter cat picz without getting too close🤣🤣(just joking)
I guess Japan like a lot of the world is aging. I spent quite a bit of time in Tokyo 20 years ago and they were worried about low birth rates then, and were experiencing the villages emptying out. Now I am in India and there are no such concerns. In the old days in Europe, washing the sidewalk helped cool the air as the water evaporates (like a swamp cooler). Rome was famous for cool wet squares.
Yeah, the aging population and low birth rates is certainly getting worse! The pandemic didn't help either. And yeah, you're right! The waters also cools the sidewalk thanks to evaporation. I didn't think of that!

I THINK YOU'RE TOO USED TO HAVING THAT LONG ZOOMY LENS THAT HAVING THAT SMALL CAMERA, TO GET CLOSE, IS WEIRD FOR YOU! JUST MY THOUGHTS. I DO ENJOY YOUR OTHER VIDEOS THO. STILL SUBBED!
Thanks for your opinion but I think you have a very limited understanding of how I shoot. Over the last 10+ years I've been using the GR series cameras and prime lenses on my Nikon like this much more than I use zoom lenses or telephoto lenses. I did a few videos about telephoto to mix things up, but it's not usual for me. Also, it's not about getting close or not. It's about finding the right kind of subjects that interest me. You have to bear in mind that these videos are not meant to impress you with the BEST possible photos. That is simply not realistic. Any street photographer will tell you that you can walk around for hours and come back with nothing special. These videos are meant to show you the real uncut process. I don't hide anything. If the photos are boring (and I agree with you, there were mostly ho-hum on this outing) then so be it. It's about the creative process. If I wanted to show you my best photos it would just be a slide show of images, not a walk in the city with live narration. :)
What disturbs me about 99% of Streetphotography is that the images lack of relevance. I mean either you shoot very interesting scenes (like Bruce Gilden, Martin Parr) or you work with good composition and colours to create a piece of art (like William Eggleston). But just walking around and shooting random stuff that don´t make a great image doesn't make sense to me.
But it's fun! I don't make the images for you. I make them for me. Every once in a while I get lucky and get a solid photo. As for these videos, I make them to share my philosophy and technical knowledge for those who are interested. Plus, you are comparing an educational video, kind of a behind the scenes, with some of the highest caliber street photographers to ever do it. Do you think I can just go out and hit home runs like those guys while shooting a a RUclips video for an hour? I don't even think THOSE guys could do it. Their amazing bodies of work were shot over decades. I'm sure they shot random useless shit too, but you never see those photos because those guys didn't make RUclips videos letting the whole world see their working process. Food for thought. :)
@@EYExplore I don’t like the fact that you act as hobby virologist. The pandemic is still here because of this ignorant behavior. You don’t like it? Don’t post it.

@@EYExplore How does focus work? Is it like on other pocket cameras where you see green rectangle or is it small dot like on bigger camera and how fast it can focus when you press button half a way? thank you!
Thanks.
Thank you so much!! I also had a RX100 for a while, might've been the III or IV. I enjoyed it too!
Nothing like ambient sounds of the city especially at 9:42. Adorable.
Haha yeah. I wish I shot it! :)
In which modus did you take the photos?
I used Av mode + Pinpoint AF + Multi-segment metering + Raw. :)
@@EYExplore Is the grIIIx acceptable for portraits? Is it sharp enough like the best apsc lenses?
@@Bossti do you mean for both cameras the image quality without post production?
For more videos like this! Is nice paced, just taking photos, without imposing rules for taking a photo, etc etc. The photo of the green wall with all the ACs are amazing! The same for the tram one, that you used the greenery as a foreground! :)
Thank you so much!! I'm glad you enjoy this style. I think most of our recent videos are like this. Then next few that are coming out are also in the same style. I think it's what I want to do from now on, just have a rough theme and then just shoot. :)
9:37 you missed a really nice shot on the mother with a child here, i think it their style was fitting the scene and the umbrella in bright sunlight is interesting :D
Yep, like 30 people told me already and also I noticed when I was editing. This happens a lot when shooting these videos. I can't focus on shooting and presenting 100%. :)
@@EYExplore Haha, im sorry :D Yea ofcourse the point of these videos is not to capture every moment but to explain things, and i love every aspect of ur videos keep it up man!

A video comparing 28mm and 40mm GR3 would be great :)
Already shot! Will be out in a few weeks! Next video will be about Nikon and a 24mm lens I got for it, then the next one will be Ricoh vs Ricoh. :)
Are you filming with Sony? Because it's really struggling with the light 😬 actually hard for the eyes 😕
We're using a Nikon Z50, nothing fancy. The light was difficult on this day because we shot in the early afternoon so there was a lot of very harsh sunlight which we kept coming in and out of.
Nice vid , my escape for the day ;)
Thank you!! Glad to hear that! :)
Between the GRIIIx and 40mm for the Nikon Z line you have to be one happy man.
Glad to hear that!! I hope you enjoy it! :)
Are all of the shots straight out of camera?
No, I only shoot in raw and edit all of my photos. To me editing is part of the creative process. I don't edit very heavily though, and some photos have very basic adjustments. :)
You are the best. Read my mind wanting a side by side comparison
Hehe, it's on the way!! :)
It's always a good day when you guys drop a video! What's the camera bag you were using? Been wanting to get a small one for my everyday outings and yours looks pretty nice :)
Thank you!! It's not a camera bag. It's just a little satchel I bought in a department store here in Tokyo. The brand is Squalo Works. :)
If you haven’t, check out Peak Design’s 3L Everyday Sling. Shout be about the same as the one he’s using.
O ba chan harajuku got me. 😂 What a poetic phrase.
Haha, yeah! I have no idea who first came up with it. :)
And, missed a shot at 9:43 mother with child and umbrella. That’s what happens when you are blogging! Squeaky shoes and all. 😂😂😂
Thank you!! Glad to hear you know this area. More GR videos are on the way!
Any idea when it will be available in North America?👀

I like the 40mm focal length! it's better than 28mm.
and thanks for the video.
Glad you like it!! :)
They should have called it GRIIIP for pandemic. Because it's the same camera but you can socially distance a little more. 😂
I love the photos and the area, plus 40-45mm it's how I started photography. For years I only had an aps-c canon with the 28f1.4. Then I enjoyed the fujifilm 27f2.8 on the X-E2. I miss it now I have only an X-70.
Haha what a great name!! I also started on 28mm with APSC, which came out to about 42mm. I really enjoyed it and keep a 40mm around ever since. :)
I had a GR2 and am super happy with the GR3 and even more so with the GR3x! Thank you for watching! :)
I was told it was about the Tan Den ki point.
What's that?
Shout out for the camera man
Yeah!! :)

Sugamo has an atmosphere of old Tokyo like 1970s.
Yeah!! I love that about it!
Haha yeah they are!! But honestly, after having both for a while.... Iove both, but when it comes down to it I go with the 28mm. It just 'feels' right for the form factor. While on my huge Nikon 40mm feels right for me. :)
@@EYExplore yea 40 does seem really tight for such a tiny camera haha
The OG 28mm is the legend for me and will always be with me, although Im happy for you guys that wished for this camera for sooo long. Now you can tighter cat picz without getting too close🤣🤣(just joking)
Haha yeah. I think both are good and have their uses. We have a video on the way where I shoot with both and compare the experience. :)
You're very good, believe you me!💁🏼
Thank you so much!! :)

Red panties is also a thing in Chinese culture as well, every now and then your Zodiac sign will conflict with the trouble god, wearing red panties can neutralize the bad luck.
Ah! It must come from the same source then. A lot of Japanese traditions are based on ideas that originate in China long ago.

Who is that?
A fast 50 would have made more sense to me. 40mm is too close to the 28mm of the GR3.
Yeah, I can understand that argument. But there might be some limitation to how big they can make the lens while keeping the form factor.
THE CAMERA ITSELF, TAKES GREAT IMAGES AND COLORS ARE AMAZING. THE SHOTS THO, WERE VERY BORING SNAPS. GOT A COUPLE GOOD ONES IN THERE.
