Donnie Van Zant was the lead singer of 38 Special only for their first couple of albums, both of which tanked. It wasn't until Don Barnes took over the lead vocals for the band did 38 Special start gaining traction. "Rockin' Into The Night" was their third studio album, and it was this song where the band started gaining traction, and Don Barnes sang lead. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Donnie van zant was in fact lead singer you have to listen to the early albums. Listen to first time around. Back alley Sally wild eyed southern boys. He sounded like ronnie from skynyrd.
... the 1985 Van Zant album with Geffen was the Johnny Van Zant Band, not Donnie. The 1998 Van Zant album was the first album the brothers did together.
Not true. Should go see some other interviews, specifically one with Jeff Carlisi where you learn the whole story. You would be surprised on influences and who co-wrote a lot of their hits. Their first hit "Rockin into the night" was actually co-written by a member of the band Survivor. (Eye of the tiger) and so on. Their "Signature sound" as it is called is by playing the 8th notes a lot while at the same time an unrelated melody is used/married to the song, and this can be noticed in many of their songs. Who was that inspired by? The Cars with "Just what i needed". Read the credits on their hits, you would be very surprised.
Donnie Van Zant couldn't sing, write or even play a guitar. Just look at the videos and if you know anything about guitar chords you have your answer. Just look at "Hold on Loosely" and at best you have a baton twirler and that is being kind. Ronnie was the talent in the family, everyone including dad knew that. RIP Ronnie
Got to disagree about Donnie. Ronnie was actually quoted saying Johnny was the best out of the three brothers. My point: Not everybody agrees with you.
@@KurtWitowski Don Barnes was a good friend and begs to differ, Ronnie was the real deal and donnie using ronnies connections to record exe. Just look at their hits and ther writing credits and who sang them> Case Closed

I allways likes 38....but Donnie just carrys the name. Done Barnes actually sang atleast 80 percent of the songs and Barnes can really play guitar. Donnie just ran around with a guitar on stage ....sorry just telling it the way it is.....for me Don Barnes is actually 38.
I kinda get tired of hearing that Donnie VZ was the lead vocalist because all the hits I heard & love so much are Don Barnes, not DVZ. What, if your last name's VanZant you're better than others? Pffft!

what was Donnie Van Zant's actual role in 38 Special?
Because it was Donnie Barnes who wrote all the songs & sang all the lead vocals.
Donnie cowrote alot of their songs but Barnes sang what would be hits but Donnie did sing too
