Not only that, he draws and spins while still holding his drink cup upright, like he'd done it a thousand times before and that's likely because Val practiced by doing just that. In Real Genius he rolls quarters down the knuckles of both of his hands at the same time. And that was for one scene in a silly 80s nerd comedy. He's always been a truly dedicated master of his craft, it's so tragic that he lost his voice.
When Doc says "Say when" it is the most understated yet intimidating line in the whole movie. He is not even the slightest bit concerned about losing to Ringo.
And it hits on multiple levels. I mean, yes, Doc knows he's in complete control of the situation, and his words (and their delivery) convey that...but he also knows he's facing a long, slow, wasting death and he isn't the least bit afraid of someone giving him a quicker, cleaner departure from life. He's a man who literally has no fear of losing, because even if he loses, he still gains a more worthy death than he was looking at if he didn't do anything. And an enemy who has no fear of dying is a truly intimidating thing to face.
What I like about that line is that there’s just the slightest edge to “say when.” Like his adrenaline is just starting to kick in because he genuinely believes that he’s about to have the fight he’s been anticipating with Ringo.

What are you even talking about. Kilmer is in the title of the clip we are all commenting on. What in the world does Kimmel have to do with comments on Val Kilmer playing Doc Holiday. I’m not sure if you an idiot, a drunk or more likely a drunken idiot.
This was Val Kilmers moment. No one will ever be able to play that part without drawing comparisons. If Doc Holiday came back to life and tryed out for the part we’d all tell him he was playing himself wrong. I absolutely love Kurt Russells work in everything he’s ever done and yet Val Kilmer made me fixated on his character throughout the movie.
Kurt actually was very good in Tombstone himself but Val was so mesmerizing as Doc that Kurt gets overlooked a lot. Kurt had some great lines too like his "Hells coming with me" speech or the "smoke that skinwagon" or "not before I turn your head into a canoe". Those are very quotable lines just not as legendary as Doc's.
Val Kilmer absolutely stole the show! It's also my all time favorite movie. All of his scenes and lines are classics! No one else could have made Doc Holiday such a phenomenon like Val did. He absolutely nailed it!
One of the best westerns ever put on film. The saloon face off in Latins and the drinking cup "duel" between Johnny Ringo and Doc Holiday and then the final gun fight between them are absolute classics. Val Kilmer and Michael Biehn are brilliant.
In my mind, Val Kilmer won the Oscar that year. His take on Doc Holiday was epic, and will forever be the standard against which all future Doc Holidays are measured. I have seen Tombstone 100x and can quote every one of Kilmer’s lines. Outstanding work.
@Steve Allred Yes but its been more than once that has Val been overlooked by the Academy, he also deserved an Oscar for his portrayal of Jim Morrison.
Val Kilmer, in my eyes, is one of the greatest actors of all time. He's a chameleon. His portrayal of Holliday wasn't even a surprise to me. Watch the Saint and you'll see he can become anyone! He's amazing
This movie is legendary. So many iconic scenes and great performances. Val should have won the Oscar (obviously), but Michael Biehn also deserved a nomination.
I dont know why people dont mention him more. M.Biehn was so great that his face expressions was telling all the time what`s going on. Maybe it`s easier to recognize V.Kilmer cause he played hero part. It is still weird cause Biehn was shining like Lawrence Olivier or Brando at their very best, which is also very surprising cause I never though that he could be this great. They also did those scenes together.
@@heimonen5174 Just like Brando could have never delivered in _On the Waterfront_ without Steiger to work off, the scene partner plays a critical role in making the star shine.
Yep. Hands down. ALTHOUGH the guy who played Doc in Wyatt Earp wasn't bad. Not as good, but he was decent. The rest of that movie was crap though which sucks because I love Kevin Costner.
I lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the eighties and Val Kilmer lived in a small community nearby called Tesuque. He was so humble that he had his name and phone number listed in the local phone book. Now, that is what I call a true small town guy.
I'm your huckleberry......greatest line ever in modern cinematic history. I remember watching this with my dad who grew up on real westerns, and thus is still my favorite movie of all time. Even the wifey will watch this every week and repeat his lines 😁😁 "Say when Johnny Ringo"
Val Kilmer was absolutely brilliant in Tombstone. I love the choice of clips, too. He was that looming specter of death in every scene who happened to also be Wyatt Earp's guardian angel. Such a fantastic character from costume, to camera shots, to his Southern elegance and timeless hedonistic self-annihilation. You simply couldn't have found a better actor to do this role, then or now. Val Kilmer is easily one of the finest American actors to ever grace the screen. What is more, his interview shows what an amazingly cool guy he is.
I love Tombstone. There was multiple great performances, but Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday was fantastic. When he was on screen you were drawn to his acting because it was so phenomenal.
I love how the rest of the gang freaks out and tackles Ringo once they get a good look at Doc's eyes; the killing intent Kilmer radiated in that scene was absolutely chilling.
I remember a line from John Wayne in the Shootist “I find most men aren’t willing, they’ll take a breath or bat an eye before they shoot, I won’t”. That was the real Doc Holiday.
It’s not very often in film when a character with a smaller role can completely steal the show in every scene he’s in, but Kilmer did that with some extra on top in Tombstone despite the already fantastic cast around him. There’s just a uniqueness to how he played Doc, where he’s frail and dying, while also being the most dangerous man in the room.
Val made that movie! I teared up just watching the trailer for his documentary "Val" and still working up the nerve to watch it. It's so hard seeing him sick, but he will always be a legend!
How that performance didn't win an Oscar is an astounding mystery. It was because of that character and Johnny Ringo that I put that movie into my top three westerns ever made. His portrayal was top notch work.
Ok. Name your top 3. Mine would be Tombstone, Unforgiven and one of Clints earlier movies. Perhaps Josie Wales. Scratch that.... Josie Wales is great, but I absolutely love Open Range. So... those would be my top 4. And Open Range would be number 3 and Wales being #4. Only because I grew up with the newer ones.

Val Kilmer is simply one of the best. I’ve been a fan since first saw him in Real Genius back in the 80’s. He always put comedy into every character he does.
You dont need an oscar, when you perform extraordinary it gets noticed by the people its made for and everyone that has the pleasure of watching Tombstone knows they see greatness.
This was Val Kilmers finest work as an actor. Tombstone is the best western ever as well. He was intense as Jim Morrison in The Doors, but this role was better. I wish him all the best for him, health wise.
One of the greatest performances in cinematic history. Kilmer re-defined that character and made all previous portrayals obsolete. His Doc Holiday is the new gold standard.
This version of "Tombstone" continues to be a favorite for me. One of few best made, and the cast was fantastic in character. Movies made about actual people, have always been a interest but, the actors that involve themselves enough to research the character they're to portray, makes it all the more special. Thanks for a trip back into history.
I'm going to have to go with.... "I've got 2 guns. One for each of ya" And then he proceeds to spin each pistol opposite ways. Of course thats just a great one, and there are so so many more fantastic lines in that movie by a lot of the actors.
Incredible performance. He just took over the screen every second he was on it. He wasn't just acting, he transformed into a captivating version of Holliday, and was a damned movie star in that role.
Best line in the movie. Delivered perfectly by the best actor in the movie. I am not a big fan of Kilmer but he definitely did a great job of portraying Doc Holliday.
He made Doc Holiday. Not to discredit the actual legend but when I think of Doc Holiday I only credit Val's interpretation. Kilmer is such an underrated actor its outrageous. Tombstone and Young Guns are great westerns made in this modern age.
Val Kilmer and Nicolas Cage are both crazy in their own way, but that should not have stopped them from winning Oscars for their work. Tombstone and The Doors for Val and Leaving Las Vegas for Nic. Three of the best acting performances I’ve seen in my 50 years on this planet.
@G.M.C. Sketch Truth Nicholson was the best hands down. Truth be told, if Heath Ledger hadn't OD'd young, his performance would not be mentioned as that good IMO. Personally I didn't enjoy that movie or think his performance was anything noteworthy or special, they always say that crap after someone dies.

They're just so different. Absolutely legendary performance from the dude :)

Ken Summerlin Did Paul die? The correct spelling is “ pallbearer”. RUclips creator got copy of the Tombstone script and it definitely say “ huckleberry”. I have known about the “ huckleberry/ huckleberry bearers” controversy for years so you are not telling real fans of This mbstone anything they haven’t heard before
Connie the grammar police. The point is the line is Hollywood drama. Doc is answering a question, "don't any of ya got the guts to play for blood". Huckleberry would have been a stupid response, however hucklebearer is more in line of Doc character. Let's not forget, Holiday didn't kill Ringo.
@@kensummerlin180 except that to be ones "huckleberry" is to be just the right person for the given job. The difference between actors of then and now is baffling and painful. So much respect for Val Kilmer, one of my all time favorite actors.
Similar to something Steve McQueen said on the set of the magnificent 7, all I have to do is twirl my hat, and everyone forgets you in front of me.
Right! 😂 I was just thinking that. Absolutely....like Doc you playing Doc wrong. 🤭
The lines written for Doc were so amazing. So quotable and Val killed this performance. It's 2022 and I still think about that role til this day.
The most overlooked Oscar. Ever. Brilliant performance. Every line. Masterpiece.
He seems so humble and nice for a celebrity. When he’s talking it’s like he’s just chatting with a friend. ❤️
He’s grown as a person. The Val Kilmer who worked with Marlon Brando was not so humble.
You just have to be normal to be heaped with compliments.
If you’ve seen it 100x, you should be able to recite the whole movie.
@@jeffn4836 Sean here … I think I probably could! I’ll have to try it sometime.
Who cares about Oscar’s
"I know Ike, let's have a spelling contest!" One of the best westerns ever. Val Kilmer was perfect, flawless.
All of his quotes and one liners are some of the best ever! I still say them randomly to this day!
A great movie Val Kilmer was ripped off 99% of the people agree he should have won an Oscar
He should've at least been nominated. Guess who got nominated instead? John Malkovich for In The Line of Fire!
Malkovich was great in that film.... But Kilmer's Doc was a performance for the ages. Kilmer was robbed that year.
Oh yes. He definitely was cheated out of an Oscar.
@Steve Allred Yes but its been more than once that has Val been overlooked by the Academy, he also deserved an Oscar for his portrayal of Jim Morrison.
Val Kilmer doesn't need an Oscar to tell the world that he is a great actor. Val Kilmer is one of the best.
Kilmer best ever Doc Holiday 😁
Yep. Hands down. ALTHOUGH the guy who played Doc in Wyatt Earp wasn't bad. Not as good, but he was decent. The rest of that movie was crap though which sucks because I love Kevin Costner.
while I understand what you're saying, I think you're wrong. Val Kilmer is the only Doc Holliday
Agreed!
@@bluebeard6189 While I understand what YOU are saying... the guy in Wyatt Earp really wasn't that bad. OBVIOUSLY Val is the best to ever play Doc.
Ah'm yo huckleberry
Kilmer was brilliant in that movie. He deserved an award for that performance.
Too bad his competition was Tommy Lee Jones in the fugitive
Award or not .... the people know it was amazing. to hell with Hollywierd
One of the very best performances I've ever seen in a movie. Downright shame he did not win an Oscar for Tombstone, or even nominated!
In a film filled with fantastic performances by brilliant actors Val steals every scene he's in. Absolutely phenomenal performance!
I lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico in the eighties and Val Kilmer lived in a small community nearby called Tesuque. He was so humble that he had his name and phone number listed in the local phone book. Now, that is what I call a true small town guy.
They say he's a very down to earth guy.
I'm your huckleberry......greatest line ever in modern cinematic history. I remember watching this with my dad who grew up on real westerns, and thus is still my favorite movie of all time. Even the wifey will watch this every week and repeat his lines 😁😁 "Say when Johnny Ringo"
"He's down by the creek, walkin' on water!"
God. Every line he spoke was memorable.
What a brilliant synopsis. Thank you for that 👊✨️
I love Tombstone. There was multiple great performances, but Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday was fantastic. When he was on screen you were drawn to his acting because it was so phenomenal.
One of the best actor portrayals .. ever ! Thank you Val, for a fantastic movie experience !
I love how the rest of the gang freaks out and tackles Ringo once they get a good look at Doc's eyes; the killing intent Kilmer radiated in that scene was absolutely chilling.
The real Wyatt Earp said that Doc was the most dangerous man in the world
I remember a line from John Wayne in the Shootist “I find most men aren’t willing, they’ll take a breath or bat an eye before they shoot, I won’t”. That was the real Doc Holiday.
It was said he couldn't fist fight and "looked like a 15 year old kid" but can handle a pistol
@@insomniablanket Thats interesting, but a bold statement from a man who definitely had no been all over the world to know that for a fact. Lol
@@in_vas_por8810 Americans always consider their borders to be the "whole world" ;-)
It’s not very often in film when a character with a smaller role can completely steal the show in every scene he’s in, but Kilmer did that with some extra on top in Tombstone despite the already fantastic cast around him.
There’s just a uniqueness to how he played Doc, where he’s frail and dying, while also being the most dangerous man in the room.
Val Kilmer was outstanding as, Doc Holiday. He deserved an Oscar for that role.
Only Val Kilmer could make “I’m your huckleberry.” Sound hard
Yeah,Well Said People,The Whole World Has Spoke'n,Can You Say,(""Give Him,Call A Oscar""!!)... Signed ACS...
Facts!
Well stated.
Its all about the meaning and context within the scene.
Terrifying line that
One of the best acting I've ever seen! Love, Love, Love that movie! Can't believe it did not get more awards! Excellent job Val!
Val Kilmer was absolutely brilliant in the role as was the writer of those amazing lines.
Still one of my top 5 favorite movies. TOMBSTONE is a bonafide classic !
Val made that movie! I teared up just watching the trailer for his documentary "Val" and still working up the nerve to watch it. It's so hard seeing him sick, but he will always be a legend!
He made that movie, I watch it probably once a year, a gem. I can't imagine anybody else playing that part. You are a legend bro
@@twitchosx That's a great list. Now you got me thinking of Clint Eastwood movies though. The character arc in unforgiven leading up to that final scene was amazing. Josey Wales has always been a favorite. Not a Western but gran torino was just awesome
@@twitchosx Tombstone, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider. Hell of a hard choice. Open range is really close in there, as well as Big Jake.
My Top Three Western Movies:
Tombstone
Open Range
The Cowboys (staring John Wayne)
Honorable Mention: True Grit (the remake)
Guilty Pleasure: Silverado
@@paladinsix9285 God almighty! Get your head checked! The remake of True Grit is an absolute pile of shit, and you put that on your list, but not Unforgiven? Ridiculous! Seriously... True Grit is ridiculously terrible! Unforgiven is not just the best Western ever made (beyond a shadow of a doubt!), it goes on the short list of the greatest movies ever made!
can you believe how Val changed into that voice without any preparation -- that is a grand talent....
I love how much credit he gives the writer; thats actually rare
Val Kilmer is simply one of the best. I’ve been a fan since first saw him in Real Genius back in the 80’s. He always put comedy into every character he does.
DJI Drones and Stuff ... You must've missed Top Gun.
J W I forgot that one. He was funny as hell in that movie as well.
DJI Drones and Stuff ... You may be experiencing EAS.
J W lol. I’m afraid I don’t know what that is.
Willow was also a fantastic movie!
The coolest part about the performance is how he breathed like a person losing lung capacity and worked it with his speech. High level skills.
You dont need an oscar, when you perform extraordinary it gets noticed by the people its made for and everyone that has the pleasure of watching Tombstone knows they see greatness.
Agree. He's already an immortal, rewards or no
His portrayal of Doc Holiday is a thing of pure beauty!!!
"Yes, it's true. You are a good woman. Then again, you may be the Anitchrist."
My husband tells me the same🤣 Love that scene
He knew she was screwing him over helping him drink himself to death, and he kind of liked it
Let's go my soft Hungarion Devil!
@@munckymagic yeah he liked her 'pluck' as she rode him to death :)
This version of "Tombstone" continues to be a favorite for me. One of few best made, and the cast was fantastic in character. Movies made about actual people, have always been a interest but, the actors that involve themselves enough to research the character they're to portray, makes it all the more special. Thanks for a trip back into history.
Why Johnny Ringo, you look like someone just walked over your grave. The best line in the film, delivered perfectly, and stole the whole movie.
I'm going to have to go with.... "I've got 2 guns. One for each of ya" And then he proceeds to spin each pistol opposite ways. Of course thats just a great one, and there are so so many more fantastic lines in that movie by a lot of the actors.
I'm your hackberry
Say when?.....
Aaron Burnett “Huckleberry”
I'm afraid the pressure was more than he could bare.
Michael Biehn was awesome as well.
fandude7 yeah Michael did the real acting in terminator and the other two were the ones to become mega stars
Omg absolutely, the entire cast couldn't have been created any better, every single one.
Val Kilmer is such a brilliant and gifted actor, one of my favorites, no two characters are the same.
My favorite movie and my favorite character in this movie, he should of won the Oscar!!!!!👍👍👍👍
Man's a priceless talent and underrated I know not why.👍👍
Bob P he’s widely recognized as an exceptional talent. Underrated? Hardly...
He was a bit of a prick, as good as he was.
Incredible performance. He just took over the screen every second he was on it. He wasn't just acting, he transformed into a captivating version of Holliday, and was a damned movie star in that role.
Kilmer as Doc Holliday... THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
So good to see Val interacting with fans and seeming to enjoy it.
This is from 2012 though. Met him last year-the man was done dirty via throat cancer. Hands down.
Two of his best petformances. So many great character roles. Love to you Val. Your courage inspires us all.
"Poor soul. He was just too high strung."
The strain was more than he could bayuh
😂
Best line in the movie. Delivered perfectly by the best actor in the movie. I am not a big fan of Kilmer but he definitely did a great job of portraying Doc Holliday.
You're no daisy!!! You're no daisy at all!
He made Doc Holiday. Not to discredit the actual legend but when I think of Doc Holiday I only credit Val's interpretation.
Kilmer is such an underrated actor its outrageous.
Tombstone and Young Guns are great westerns made in this modern age.
Loved The Movie Thunder Heart as well... Great three actors.
Odd Apprentice, please don’t neglect Unforgiven which showed the raw, rough and unforgiving nature of what life was like back then.
The Ghost and the Darkness was an amazing movie as well..
Nic did win for Leaving Las Vegas.
Just like Heath Ledger will always be the joker, Val Kilmer will never be outdone as Doc Holiday.
Props to Heath but the Joaquin Phoenix Joker looks incredible
Heath gave a spectacular performance. Too bad that it wasn't the joker.
Well there was a guy named Jack...
Hamill is the best Joker, everyone knows that.
What an amazing transformation. Most actors are clearly recognizable in the characters they play, but even though the logical part of me understands that Val Kilmer played Doc, I still can't really make my brain accept that. They're just so different. Absolutely legendary performance from the dude :)
Val Kilmer is an underrated legend. Real Genius is one of my favorite movies.
“Wyatt I am rolling...”. Legendary delivery
Why, Johnny, I didn’t realize you were still there. You may go now.
Good line. Too many great ones to quote.
Billy Bob lol
That was my favorite line in that movie
But leave the shotgun...
Awesomeness!!!
I loved Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday, noone will ever come close to his performance and research/study of the character he portrayed. He made the character soooooooooooo interesting and funny.
"Say when"
Michael Powell "Why Johnny Ringo, you look like someone walked ovah yoah grave!
Yo no daisy, no daisy at all!😆😆
Your no daisy....your no daisy at all.....
Why Wyatt...
You’re gay
Best shit ever when he says say when haha everytime
Nonsense, I have not begun to defy myself. I can watch this movie a 1000 time's. Val is one of a kind!
Val Kilmer was PERFECT as Doc.!!!!
Val Kilmer is an outstanding actor. He's fantastic in all his movies.
I was so glad to finally have someone portray Doc Holliday speaking with a Georgian accent.
Exactly!!
C. Johnson
Pardon me, but Georgia, not Georgian. He had a Southern accent, not a British one.
"I'm your huckleberry" I always loved that line.
I hated that line. The term is hucklebearer. Now called Paulbearers
So when you ask if anyone wants to play for blood, someone saying "I'm your huckleberry" is saying Yeah, I'm the one you're looking for. That's why he says "I'm your huckleberry. That's just my game."
and as they mentioned, the script says huckleberry, and that isn't the only time it's said. It was done purposefully. It wasn't an oversight.
@@kensummerlin180 in the movie he did. In real life, he was murdered, found dead, shot in the head. This video is about the movie version.
Tombstone one of my favorite westerns. I love westerns. Everytime they show this movie i always watch it and absolutely loved Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. There have many actors that portrayed that character but Kilmer's portrayal is iconic. Kurt Russell was a good Wyatt Earp too.
