When I did field service work, the worst places to try to fix a machine were the "lean" shops that didn't want any "clutter". I could never believe that these guys would have a 30,000 sq.ft shop full of millions of dollars of CNC machine tools and I would have to leave the building and drive to the local hardware store to buy a couple socket head cap screws or a few feet of wire. Grinding shops were the absolute worst. Many times you'd have a whole shop full of grinding machines and no other machine tools of any kind. Need to press a bearing? They might have a vise somewhere. Need a to drill a hole? They might have a corded hand drill somewhere. Need to machine a new keyway? They have to send it out to another machine shop. Blew my mind every time.

The best old style manual machinist ever knew I knew, an absolute perfectionist, had a shop in his garage and when I visited him I expected his shop to be pristine, I was somewhat shocked to find it full to overflowing with stuff and a narrow path between each machine for access, if it was good enough for him who am I to have a tidy shop😅

I worked on a clapped out old horizontal mill at a hole in the wall little run down shop nearby ours. The place is old, dark, dirty, and could pass for an indoor scrap yard. The x axis nut stripped the threads out. I got the table off and then was about to remove some stuff and asked the guy if they had any brake cleaner or something i could clean some stuff with. He's like "uhh we might have some kerosene" nah im good I'll just wipe the worst of it off with a rag.

It is a good thing you were able to acquire the building next door. SMW just keeps expanding! Manufacturing your own product lets you really hone the process. Glad to see American manufacturing rolling right along!

Can't wait to see more of the Willemin in action! Does it use a special adapter on the spindle nose for turning (since HSK-40e doesn't have drive dogs)?

OMG, thank you for that gridfinity reference. i also used Schaller bins but have to print a lot of my own due to lack of variety. ive been using Fusion for this but gridfinity is going to save me so much time. i also own a Bambu Labs XC1 and a Hotshot oven. great tools and support from their respective companies. Love your channel. Cheers from Vancouver.

well if you want to print out things like those gridfinity faster, how about getting some of your interested students to build out a vzbot? that would be a good high performance machine. they have started selling kits now for it so does not have to be such a time sink to get one put together / up and running

All those years ago, when you got your first yellow crane (the one on the cart), there was an argument in the comments over the exorbitant price of buying vs making. Now that you've spent more than the price of a nice car on them, do the numbers still favour buying?

One of my main customers wanted me to go in and service a motor gear box ( its not what we do but ) and when I got their they had gone so down the "LEAN" rabbit hole it was like a hospital, when I asked where was a bench and vice they said it got thrown out as the machines had a vice, so I worked on the floor only for the Foreman to say your making the floor dirty and your tools arnt put away, I smiled and carried on, found it was just a bearing misaligned so pulled it out and re fitted it which was a pain with not even having a mobile table, got the machine working and the foreman said he wouldnt have me back as it made the shop look untidy, the guy on the machine said this place is a nightmare to work now they have gone down the ultra lean road, we have absolutely nothing to repair anything with, everything has to come new and they only order nuts bolts in the amount they need. My shop would have given them a hart attack.
This has been my worst year since 1984 to try to stay in business, the start of the year we brought our first mini mill because its small and has a tool changer, it ran flat out for 2 months and now just carnt get any work what so ever and many of my people in the same field of work say the same its a race to who can do it the cheapest. From what I see lean works if you make a product, if you have a contract shop that covers oil and gas and all the way down to fixing broken studs on tractors then you need clutter and all the odd bits, we do manual turning grinding milling then we have semi cnc turning milling, then we have cnc mill edm wire and welding and press work all in 2500 sqft, yes its compact but safe, this is the first year ever Im thinking of just getting out of engineering with each year getting harder due to foreign crap tooling coming in and only getting the repair work and even explaining to the customer its a false economy buying cheap and they say over time they will get better and I replied yes all good and well but who's going to fix it when the small shops are gone. I do like how you have grown your company over the years 👏👏👍

how do you keep the fungus/slime out of your RO water storage tank? We have had a terrible time with it, plugs filters non stop. We added a ozone generator but not sure that is helping much.

quick google search found an AP news statement from Haas.
Hard to know if its true or a rumor
"On March 3, 2022, shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Haas Automation terminated, in its entirety, its relationship with its sole existing independent distributor for Russia and Belarus, Abamet Management. Since that date, Haas has not sold or shipped any machines, parts, or software to Abamet or anyone else in Russia."

@@melgross It is true. These machines were already shipped when total conflict sparked. Haas can't turn a ship around and the machines were not Haas' property the moment they were shipped.

We just got that same 3d printer at work for the product development guys. I work right beside their area so I go over there while on night shift to see what they're cooking up. I saw a few of the prints that came off of it and I was impressed. They basically took it out of the box and hit go and it spits out near perfect parts.
I'd like to buy one but its quite pricey for my needs. I have a Ender 3 V2.
